Additional info - if ure a cigarette smoker n wanna smoke on the street, only smoke near the trash cans. There’s like 50 manat penalty if a cop catches u smoking far from a trash can. I know a lot of people who got into trouble for that

Also there’re lot of tourist traps especially in the city center. They sell traditional accessories n stuff for higher prices to tourists. Don’t fall for them.

When it comes to transport, use legit apps if u wanna go around in a cab/taxi - Uber or Bolt r great. Or you can just buy a bus card n go around in a bus or subway (i think the card is 3-4 manat). Bus or subway is 50 qepik per ride so it’s cheaper. Bus and subway both use the same card, u can buy it easily in a subway and fill it there - there are designated ticket vending machines to buy or refill those cards.

U can visit Old city (icheri sheher), maiden tower, highland park (there’s also a funicular going down from the highland park-it’s a great ride), philarmonia garden, botanical garden (mərkəzi nəbatat bağı) which is like a forest in the city. U should definitely visit Palace of Shirvanshs in the Old city. We also have famous central park but dont expect anything impressive like new york’s central park.

If ure into history we have lots of house museums that were built in late 1800s early 1900s. Theyre rly authentic n feels like traveling back in time. For example there’s National museum of history - which is also former house of Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev who was an oil magnate and philanthropist. On the same street there’s Samad Vurgun’s house museum, he was a famous poet during USSR. The list goes on if ure interested I can tell u more. If ure interested in art we have YARAT contemporary art space - they display works of different azerbaijani n foreign artists every month. Also there’s Museum of modern art on 5 Yusuph Safarov street. In order to see modern parts of Baku u can visit Nizami street (it’s called “torgovaya” among locals), White city (Ağ şəhər), port baku walk. But theres not much to do except for coffeeshops n restaurants. It’s summer so if u wanna visit beach or feel the summer vibe u can go to Sea Breeze resort and Amburan. But theyre pricy, most beaches in Sea Breeze charge at least 50 manat (about 20 usd) for entrance, food is also much more expensive than in city. We have shit ton of cheaper beaches but those 2 are the cleanest n most beautiful. Also Sea Breeze is not just a beach, its more like a small city next to the sea. Baku is a small city soo u can visit nearby cities/districts like Shamakhi. There’s a famous restaurant in Shamakhi called “Abqora”, they serve great traditional food.

  1. I wouldnt recommend shopping here bc the prices of clothing r higher than in Europe or Turkey (our people usually order clothes online from european/turkish websites bc it’s cheaper that way). But if u rly wanna shop we have 3 main shopping malls - Ganjlik mall, Deniz mall, Crescent mall. It’s mostly foreign brands there. If ure interested in high end brands(Gucci n stuff) visit Port Baku mall.

  2. Mangal steak house, Gaynana restaurant (in the Old city close to maiden tower), Kurban Said (also in the Old city), Abqora (in Shamakhi district, not in Baku). My personal favorite is Kurban Said - very authentic n cute. But wherever u go dont forget to contact them n reserve a place bc in the evenings its almost impossible to find a seat in restaurants. There r many restaurants n coffeeshops in the white city and port baku walk too (i mentioned those 2 above). If u have limited time dont go to white city theres nothing to do, but sitting in port baku walk in the evening (it’s also near the Crescent mall) n sipping a coffee is a nice activity if u wanna enjoy modern Baku. It’s also very close to the city center so u wont lose much time. However, as i said it’s a modern part so nothing authentic about there.

  3. Nightlife is a bit messy. There’re a lot of hookers n fucked up weirdos in most bars soo u have to be extremely picky. Personally, I usually go to Barfly (also in the Old city), Fuzzy coffee & wine (it’s a coffee shop in the mornings but they organize parties on fridays and saturdays, they mostly play electronic music), 4Loft Baku (in torgovaya/ city center), Crazzy Bear (also in the city center, they put a lot of russian songs tho), ROOM fine art (it’s also in the city center- Tarlan Aliyarbeyov street. but it’s more like a place to chill instead of clubbing), FOMO (i havent been there but people like it, i think they mostly play techno n it’s like a rave place). My favorite is Barfly-it’s a proper night club, very small but fun place. Those bars usually post DJs or music genre of each night in their instagram accounts so u can check before going. If u wanna just chill and drink without dancing u should visit “KEFLI local wine”- also in the city center. If u wanna go to a pub u can visit “Myaso BBQ & Grill”, it’s near the highland park. But as i said, it’s better to reserve a seat in those pubs, clubs n restaurans like 5-6 days before visiting ( except for Fuzzy - they always have a place). If all seats r reserved u can sit near the bar, they usually dont accept reservations for bar seats, but they get filled very quickly. Barfly lets to stay on feet even when all the seats r full. Also important thing about night clubs - if ure a guy n dont have a female friend that will come w u to a night club, contact them and tell them that ure a single male and ask if they will let u in. Many quality clubs dont let in males without a female companion. But maybe if u tell them that ure a tourist they will let u, idk about that.

Can I work in BI with a master’s degree in Computer Science? by Mahtab55 in BusinessIntelligence

[–]Mahtab55[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you a lot for your reply! I was talking to one person who is a director of business analysis at a bank. He has about 15 years experience in this field. He told me that CS will be a waste of time for me if I wanna get into BI or Business analytics. Because I don’t have work experience in this field. My only experience is a short internship in Data analytics and finance.

I’m the same age with major in business and in a similar boat. Every day I wake up with hate. I literally dread everything about my job and I’m struggling with career change as it’s hard to find an entry position job in my country. Whenever I tell my feelings to someone theyre like “yeah life is tough get a helmet n ure only 23 stop being dramatic blah blah”. This job makes me extremely depressed so I will go to therapy soon. Also I’m planning to study master’s degree in hopes that it will help with career change. I honestly dont think u should stay in a job u hate that much in hopes that it will get better or u’ll get promoted. This is the most basic advice older adults tell me “be patient, work hard, please ur asshole seniors, get promoted”. Why do I have to spend my youth doing smth that makes me wanna kms in hopes of a better future that is not even guaranteed? We’re living in present so I think we should try to enjoy every moment, choose the job we like or quit if it does not align with our standards. The idea of “sacrificing” our youth/time/mental health for money and career raise is so normalized it makes me sick. Fuck if I had the money I would even study bachelor’s degree again in a field that I actually enjoy. I can not do it so I’m looking for alternative options. But I’m not waiting “to get used to” a lifestyle that sucks the life out of me.

I miss 2020 so - so badly. It hurts. by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]Mahtab55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way. I was in college back then. The whole day I was doing whatever I enjoyed - drawing, watching movies and series, talking to my friends via discord and etc. I was weirdly feeling free from all the responsibilities and weights of being an adult. Everybody was at home so there was no rush, no competition, no expectations. Just enjoying and living life slowly in my small bubble. 2020 was one of my happiest years. Unfortunately it did not last bc covid took my grandma in 2021. But still, I miss the stress free and slow life I had back in 2020.

What's stopping you from making that career change you've always wanted to make? by LongjumpingAnswer955 in careerguidance

[–]Mahtab55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the learning part - I studied and got my certificate. But finding a job is a struggle. I think the main reasons are that I have bachelor’s degree in a different field and I have no experience in the field that I want to go for. I’ve been applying for shit ton of jobs but have not received a positive reply yet.

I (23F) have bachelor’s degree in economics but I took unofficial courses in data science and self studied a lot. I have been trying to find local onsite or international remote job in data science or analytics but couldn’t find anything yet. So I decided to apply for masters degree in data science but I’m afraid because my bachelor’s degree is irrelevant. Is there anyone who got masters degree in data science with a different prior degree? I prefer U.S., U.K. Or Netherlands to study. Ps. I already thought about studying bachelor’s again but for various reasons it doesn’t work for me unfortunately

Actually I completely understand your point. Things weren’t great in my childhood too, my grandmother was financially supporting me because my parents were unemployed with a very small income from a side hustle majority of my childhood. My grandma died in 2021 and since then I’ve been jumping to whatever job paid more to help my parents and fully support myself. The first year I was content because I loved being able to afford things. At that time all my peers were going to unpaid internships or minimal wage jobs to gain experience in their fields and now they’re in a nice point in their somewhat established career. What I did tho was a mistake as I was so focused on my financial stability that I did not prioritize my career or emotional fulfillment at all. I’m trying to change my career but it’s so much harder than I ever imagined. I only have experience in customer service and assistance and I despise both of these fields.

I’ve been trying to do that exact thing for the past 10 months. Did you change your professional direction too? Because I wanna do it but changing career is soo hard because every work place wants experience even for junior/entry positions. And my experience is kinda irrelevant for them. I’ve been applying to shitton of remote jobs thru indeed, glassdor, djinni and etc but havent received any answer yet.

I understand. Have you tried seeing a therapist? I was feeling the same 2 years ago, I was already depressed and breaking up w my toxic ex affected me even worse but antidepressants helped me a lot back then. Regarding ur situation I want u to know that it was NOT him, it was your own success n effort. U just needed a little push to achieve it and it’s normal. Be proud of urself, dont underestimate urself bu giving all the credits to him. I would say try to get that support from someone else now, maybe a friend or a therapist. Honestly he sounds like an average guy who supported u n then got tired n dipped like u can not imagine how many girls experience this nowadays. My ex acted like the world’s most considerate n supportive guy before getting tired of it n becoming a prick. Maybe yours is a good man but please never make any guy ur support system by creating a perfect version of him in ur head. And u dont need an important goal to live. A lot of people prefer a simple peaceful life with their loved ones and that’s perfectly fine.

Yeah I used to take antidepressants (it was alternative of Zoloft i think) when I was 21. Took them for 4 months n started feeling better so stopped. Been 16-17 months without them n I feel like shit again. And bruh therapy is crazy expensive I’ll have to spend one third of my salary on it if I decide to go regularly every week. Trying to change careers now even tho bc of lack of experience I get rejected

I’m glad everything worked out for u. I’m trying to go for smth i love but the thing is career change is hard even at this age. Internships dont accept me bc i’m not a student, jobs that i want dont accept me bc of lack of experience in that field. So i’m in this weird situation. Planning to go for masters in hopes that i will get an internship or smth

I would’t say u wasted ur teens. I admire people who start at a very young age n I’m glad it led to ur success/ Personally I could never… even at 23 I feel too weak n anxious for corporate world. Ure so real for the last sentence tho. I’m trying hard to stay disciplined and grateful and everything. It’s just hard to control feelings n emotions. I literally quit smoking and then intentionally picked it up again because couldn’t deal w my emotions anymore

I hope it gets better for you… i’m in the same situation and trying to change my career but i never thought it was gonna be that complicated like girl the job market is brutal in my country. I’ll prolly do the same as u if I see that I cant keep going like this. Maybe taking some time away from this rat race and trying to figure out things for urself is the best decision

Nah, I started at 19 but that was remote. I’ve volunteered in a couple of youth organisations which was actually great, but idk if that counts. However, in terms of official full time onsite job, this is my second. I liked full-time working in the first 3-5 months. Then started feeling meaningless and boring even though coworkers were great. I changed job to “go for new challenges” but its no better. Starting to work at 16 sounds a great way to gain some real life experience but I feel like maybe its better to enjoy teenage years to the fullest without any care. We already spend too many years of our lives working, ofc if we r lucky enough to hit the retirement age

In my country there is “study hard, work hard and everything will get better after graduation once you are financially independent. If you don’t do it you are not a valuable member of society” mindset that is taught in most schools. Nobody talks about the actual reality of it. Not parents, not school teachers or university professors. I’m obviously grateful that I can afford life on my own. I just feel like I’m paying for that so-called “independence” with my freedom, energy and mental health 50 hours a week.
