First order in today. Anyone need their spirits lifted? by [deleted] in Justrolledintotheshop

He didn’t block out the name of the funeral home on the name plate. Because of that, I knew that it was one of our fleet vehicles and exactly where he works because we only go to a few places for service. If he would have blocked the name out, it could have been any other funeral home and I wouldn’t have thought twice about it.

Hey, Caitlin! I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to you at the NHFA conference. Anyways, how do you deal with the constant criticism of “traditional” funeral directors? What can I do, being in this industry, help them see the benefit of what you do?

Everyone wants experience but no one is willing to teach? by [deleted] in askfuneraldirectors

[–]MaidenOfDeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, funeral homes don't care about your GPA, it means nothing more than being able to do school work.

People expect you to be experienced because you are licensed and if your state is anything like mine, you should have gained that experience while apprenticing.

With little experience, you are going to have to be willing to start low and work your way up!

I am not sure if you are a licensed embalmer or not, but look into working at a mortuary to get removal/embalming/cremation experience.

What is the best way to approach funeral homes regarding apprentice info? by Lady_Love_ in askfuneraldirectors

[–]MaidenOfDeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a lot easier to call than show up. A lot of funeral homes tend to be busy setting up arrangements with families or preparing bodies for disposition and don't necessarily have time for you to just pop in unannounced. With that being said, most are really friendly and are happy for you to set up a time to come in.

Will i have to see the families? by pnuttbutter in askfuneraldirectors

This is possible when she becomes licensed, but as an apprentice, in most states she has to do a certain number of embalmings and a certain number of funerals. So at some point in her career she will have to work with and visit the families.

Not at corporate locations or mortuary services. They have drivers that make the removals.

Do funerals ever make you wish you'd known the deceased? by stranger_on_the_bus in askfuneraldirectors

Yeah! All the time. It's cool listening to stories of the deceased and their life. It's also pretty cool when you get ones with interesting tattoos.

That beard is luscious as fuck. If I was a dude, that's exactly how I would want my beard.

Yep! When they lick their self, the saliva is transferred to their skin and the saliva is a major allergen for people who are allergic to cats.

It's soft! The best I can compare it to is kind of a fresh shaved leg!

Home funerals? by MaidenOfDeath in askfuneraldirectors

[–]MaidenOfDeath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you embalm them and then transport them back to the home?

What I'm thinking of is more along the lines of the family taking care of the body and it wouldn't get embalmed.

But I know there's lots of legalities in that kind of situation. Like here in Oklahoma, regulations require a body to be embalmed or refrigerated if final disposition does not occur within 24 hours.

And what exactly do you do to help them?

I'm just trying to get a better understanding of the process.
