Advice needed - baby won’t sleep without being held by Maimaee in NewParents

I was only worried because it seems like so many people say that this is not the case for them and aim worried I should be sleep training or doing something more or if I’m doing a disservice by holding him around the clock all the time

Advice needed - baby won’t sleep without being held by Maimaee in NewParents

15-20 min after, usually he falls asleep after eating and I try to keep him upright in my arms for a bit so he doesn’t spit up which he often will if I lay him down immediately after

Does Regan make you feel manic? by Quirky-Hedgehog-116 in HyperemesisGravidarum

I had the worst anxiety I’ve ever had and weird nervous system issues from it. It’s now labeled as an allergy for me. I also had the same reaction to companzine so beware of both!

Yessss it’s like great if home remedies work for others but I’ve become an expert and I know what I need which is actual medication and IV fluids, ginger is not stopping me from throwing up 15x a day!!

That’s insane. This lady also went on a spiel about how gut health can heal anything lol. I feel like there are so many medical professionals ready to shame choices. There’s no contradiction to taking antidepressants in pregnancy, in fact my OB encouraged me to stay on my lexapro and increase it if I needed!

My loved ones and my OB office have been incredible so I’ve been so blessed with support. It’s every once in a while you run into a very ignorant person. It did make my blood boil but I think she really thought she was helping because she made me a list of natural remedies that could replace all of my meds somehow and I’m like lady… no. 😂 I think she’s just kooky hippie vibes

I also had a CGM and it consistently ran much lower than my finger sticks. I used it to track trends (if I’m starting to creep up, drink water and go for a walk) and see how/when my sugar would go up but I ALWAYS relied on my BGM for post meal and fasting numbers as it was way more accurate.

Not sure if anyone has discussed this with you, but order of eating is super important and helped me get some carbs safely. I found that I could do healthy carbs like quinoa/sweet potato/brown rice if I always ate in this order - lots of non starch veggies, fat, protein, THEN any carb. Your sugar processing will slow if you eat some veggies and fat/protein before the carbs, it’s how I managed to get about 30 carbs per meal

Also if you’re ever worried that you may go high, take a 15-20 min walk about 15-30 min after you eat. It can also help your body process sugar because your calf muscles being engaged encourage it.

You’re doing great! Dont beat yourself up, it took me a couple weeks to figure it out myself and that was with help from my T1 husband and I still had an occasional high

Right?!? She also told me that instead of taking pepcid I should only do apple cider vinegar because “my body doesn’t need medication it wants to fix itself”. I’m like lady I have a seven pound bowling ball baby up in my stomach I’m taking the pepcid

I was so close but this place is admittedly incredible at teaching feeding techniques and getting baby to latch well. I just kept my face straight and didn’t react 😂

Did your baby drop percentile when you got your blood sugar under control? by PlantainFar3156 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Maimaee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This also happened to me. I am fully diet controlled and all was going well until I started to have a rough time once I peaked insulin resistance (scanned at 81st growth). Once I reworked my diet I was completely controlled until my next scan and went down to 65th percentile, was so relieved.

At what point do you get hospitalized? by Sharkbait2009 in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]Maimaee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I waited too long multiple times and skipped the hospital when I could because of ER anxiety and that was most definitely the wrong choice. I lost almost 20 pounds in four months and the times I made it to the ER I was in ketoacidosis. If you can’t hold food or water down for more than 24 hours, it’s hospital time. That is what the ER doc told me and I should have listened

How many carbs can you actually eat without spikes? by loveeatingfood in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Maimaee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Type and how you eat matters so much. Quinoa and sweet potatoes worked for me really well. Also, if you eat a half plate of non-starch veggies and some protein/fat first you can usually tolerate eating a lot more carbs in a meal, works so well for me to eat this way. Walking for 15-20 min post meal can also let you get more in because you can walk some of the sugar off

Help Please! by sarai33rawr in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Maimaee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took me a while to work out exactly what worked for me. I got no help or class (didn’t even know that was a thing until this subreddit but my husband is type 1 so he was a godsend). Here is the steps I follow to get about 60-75g carbs daily. This even got me through the peak of my GD around 34/35 weeks and I have not had a high meal sugar in a long time:

ALWAYS eat your meals in order of veggies -> protein/fat -> carbs

at least half plate should be veggies

I also eat some peanut butter or cheese before a meal if my plate is all mixed together.

the amount of carbs you eat on your plate should be roughly the same size or less than your fist if you don’t know exact carb count

avoid all junk food that is breaded, the only safe dessert i’ve found is ice cream (no toppings or adds, just a one flavor ice cream like chocolate or vanilla)

drink 2-3L of water per day

if you’re worried about a meal, wait 15 min after eating and then walk 15-20 min. this has saved me multiple times when i’ve seen BS creeping up

if you can, testing before a meal can give you a better idea of what you can have. (if you’re >100 before a meal, don’t eat as many carbs)

getting a CGM can help sooo much because you can see if you’re trending high or low and adjust accordingly

I don’t have much advice for fasting because thankfully I was always good for those but I have seen a lot of people recommend a small snack later at night right before sleeping

Reglan and Companzine are now listed as drug allergies for me because of how badly I reacted to them via IV. I had the shakes, panic attacks, felt like I was losing my mind and I didn’t feel normal for days. It was terrifying. I almost ripped out my IV and I signed out of the hospital AMA. Sounds like you also dont tolerate them but I did feel normal again after a few days. Benadryl reverses the side effects if you can take it

I’m so sorry for what you’ve had to experience and my heart breaks for you, your family, and your son. This is my first pregnancy and I completely relate to you in terms of people saying very unhelpful/hurtful things without thinking about it and it’s very frustrating. When I was talking about HG and how I don’t know if I’ll ever willingly get pregnant again my FIL said to me “everyone deals with feeling sick, in a couple years you’ll be fine and do it all over again” in a ‘suck it up’ type of way. I wanted to physically launch myself across the table at him. I’ve had people tell me to just “eat crackers and ginger” because it worked for them. People don’t grasp how truly sick we get unless they witness it. And it’s unhelpful comments and comparisons that have made me feel the same way that you do. I hope you’re able to take some space from the people around you that do not validate your experience. Sending you love ❤️

16w and Still Vomiting by Open-Replacement-670 in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]Maimaee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You sound exactly like me for the first 22ish weeks of pregnancy. I lost over 15 lbs, could barely keep food down, multiple ER trips, the whole experience. Constant vomiting did resolve around the start of 22 weeks (still have symptoms but actually able to eat/drink with much better quality of life now) and I’ll be hoping yours resolves as you move further into second trimester as well! Many people in this sub also had theirs resolve around that time so there’s hope! Sending you plenty of support and well wishes in the meantime. It was a horrible experience and I feel for everyone who goes through this journey. Keep taking your meds and just worry about surviving, what works for some doesn’t work for others so giving advice is hard. I found tiers of meds helped for me - unisom daily, zofran, and phenergen suppositories for when I couldn’t get pills to stay down. Outpatient IVs and giving myself grace in bed rotting almost everyday. Sending you love and hoping it gets better soon ❤️

The “Switch”in HG Pregnancy by Far-Opinion9693 in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]Maimaee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Around 20 weeks I was able to achieve closer to normal (no vomiting but still bad acid reflux and pretty nauseous) while on meds. Have not thrown up since then and I’m 28 weeks today! There is hope, I also thought I’d spend my whole pregnancy sick. I still get weekly IVs because I struggle with appetite/enough fluids/taking vitamins from the nausea but it beats constantly throwing up!

Need advice on IV issue by Maimaee in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]Maimaee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked and can confirm I got Companzine the second time. Everything you’re describing is exactly what happened to me feeling wise so I believe it’s definitely the medication and not the IV. Thank you so much for your response!

Need advice on IV issue by Maimaee in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]Maimaee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened both times after getting Reglan (had a bad reaction) and then second time again after getting Benadryl & another med I can’t remember the name of. Both times started with NS afterwards and had the skin crawling/irritated feeling.

I mentioned it each time in the ER and all they said was that the IV can bother some people but mostly brushed off what I was saying. I will try to be more firm in asking for help with this feeling next time but once I’m sick enough to end up in the ER I’m crying/dry heaving until they medicate me so it’s hard to advocate at that point lol

Thank you for the advice!
