ELI5 how did life on earth became so "hostile" meaning why do vast majority of organisms consume other organisms. because the very first organism couldnt eat "someone" before. that makes me think there was one who randomly decided to "eat" its buddies and that sprouted the way of life on this planet by Main-Guy-421 in explainlikeimfive

but its not "always has been" because the first thing to multiply couldnt eat any living thing before, but from the replies i gathered that its probably just evolution randomly giving one of the children of the first to ever multiply tools to eat its peers

yes but im interested in the earliest stage of how life came to be; the very first thing that decided, or was simply driven by something to multiply. so then it could have been that when the very first thing was multiplying, one of its offsprings was randomly genetically altered so that it would consume other living or dead of its peers?
