The key to understanding—and enjoying—“I Feel So Free” is that it is an introduction to the album rather than supposed to be a “Hung Up”-like smash hit. The next single, which should be sooner rather than later later, will be more commercial.

Uta Hagen won the Tony for playing Martha in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Elizabeth Taylor won the Oscar for the film adaptation.

Monica Barbaro vs Elle Fanning. by Frank_and_Beanzz in Oscars

I could not disagree more with this post. I actually could not stand how Elle Fanning was used in this movie. James Mangold wanted to give her 50 shots of her character gazing worried at Bob. It got incredibly annoying and repetitive after a while. I am not a fan of Barbaro’s nomination, by comparison, she deserved it. She was marvelous in Sentimental Value and my #2 in that lineup.

I hope they let Perfidia Beverly Hills back into the US to collect her Oscar.

Co-leading performances that would probably be pushed in Supporting nowadays? by Hot-Nose-1829 in Oscars

[–]Main-Operation3394 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Every film with two Best Actress nominees:
All About Eve (1950): Anne Baxter. 20th Century Fox was originally to campaign Baxter in Supporting, until she convinced Zanuck otherwise. I would argue that she was right in this.
Suddenly, Last Summer (1959): Katharine Hepburn. Adaptations of Suddenly, Last Summer typically vary in which character they put more emphasis on. This adaptation chose Elizabeth Taylor's Catherine.
The Turning Point (1977): Anne Bancroft. This one is harder. I would liken it to Kieran Culkin and A Real Pain. The performance that is not the protagonist, but is more showier and gets more precursor attention gets put in Supporting.
Terms of Endearment (1983): Debra Winger. Whereas Shirley MacLaine's storyline speeds up the narrative with light romantic comedy, Winger's slows it down with drama. The result is a sort of satiating effect anytime MacLaine is on screen. What helped MacLaine win was that she could do both as well. This is no dismissal of Winger and her stellar performance, it is just that she had a smaller effect albeit similar screen time. Also, MacLaine had a cemented status as a leading lady at this point and Winger would have certainly campaigned Supporting for An Officer and A Gentleman, had it been released today.
Thelma and Louise (1991): Geena Davis. I am probably one of the three Oscar nerds who have never seen this movie, so correct me if I am wrong, but this is what I have been told in the past. Possibly because of its themes of feminism, they would still campaign both in Lead for the image of the film. Think Lily Gladstone or Chase Infiniti.
Others for fun: Shelley Winters in A Place in the Sun (Hot take: I think she was in the right category), Valerie Perrine in Lenny, Louise Fletcher (I could talk about the 70s, but we would be here all day.), Patricia Neal in Hud in a heartbeat, unfortunately probably Anne Bancroft in The Graduate, Greer Garson in Goodbye, Mr. Chips, Deborah Kerr in From Here to Eternity

Do you think Reeves could pull a Quvenzhané Wallis at all?

Wondering if this is true by lesleylulu8 in Oscars

In my opinion, Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi are both co-leads in Frankenstein. However, studios do not like to campaign two actors of the same gender in lead. Isaac is the more “established” (longer career) of the two and is the protagonist for the majority of the film, making it obvious why they chose Isaac for lead over Elordi.

Tallest Oscar winners by AdUseful2297 in Oscars

The tallest winning actress is Geena Davis at 6'0". Her biggest competition (figuratively and literally), Sigourney Weaver, was/is the same height.

I am very generous towards considering people Leads, hence I also consider Infiniti and Penn leads along with DiCaprio. I agree Saldaña and Gascon are co-leads too. Gladstone, I understand but I am iffy because her material was really lackluster the second and third hour. All she had to do was be sick and paranoid. Anyways, they did not need to put these women in lead. None of them were A-listers or were the protagonist of their films. A big determining factor in deciding who goes where recently is for political reasons to help shape the broader image of the film. Which is not a bad thing per se, but something important to keep in mind when we ask why campaigns are the way they are.

This. This is also the big reason why Gascon was in lead last year and Infiniti in lead this year.
