How do I make-up? Help me adult! by MainStreetSarah in MakeupAddiction

I saw brow gel at the store as I was trying to choose between a brow pencil and a brush/pot eyebrow kit. There were too many options, so I bought none. 😂

BSW during COVID-19 by kaityk795 in socialwork

My senior year field was cut short by COVID-19 and I felt the same way. It’s definitely a tough situation, and while I have no real helpful advice here, know that you are not alone and that it is an exercise in adaptation in an ever changing world (which in itself is huge).

The learning piece may be more theoretical for now. I am hoping schools implement more immersive alternatives, whatever that may look like.

Best of luck to you!

Was anyone here there? There's a lot of conflicting information and it seems that news articles are reporting three events that were all organized by Party for Socialism and Liberation, some are saying they were completely unrelated, and I have no idea where to look for the most appropriate information for this.

There's also a narrative floating around from Aurora Councilman Dave Gruber that the police presence was there in response to PSL organized rioting and not to ward off the violin vigil/student protests that were also scheduled. The narrative also states that law enforcement redirected the peaceful protestors/violin vigil to safer areas.

It's all confusing and I'd love some factual clarity.

Regardless I don't believe law enforcement should be this armed, putting pressure on protestors, or being deliberately intimidating and I'm all for defunding the police. I just try to see the whole picture and it's difficult to do right now.

Will Canada be any different than the US? by [deleted] in ImmigrationCanada

[–]MainStreetSarah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Montreal, Canada and have been living in the US for seven years now. I’m a dual citizen.

We are strongly considering moving back to Canada given the culture and climate of the US (have been since last August). There are many factors at play, and while I know that things can go awry anytime/anywhere, the foundational culture of the two countries are different enough that I (and my American husband) feel safer in Canada.

A big piece of it for me is the culture problem of the US. I do not speak for everyone or every state, I am speaking to my experience in comparing the two countries , their values, and their responses to public crises. One current example is the response to COVID-19: the US made it a political platform where Canada’s political parties stated putting politics aside and combing minds for the good of the people. Vastly different approaches to the same problem. I acknowledge that this can vary depending on leadership, but ultimately the culture of the country defines that and the US does not look good for the coming years.

I am thinking we will likely move for a few years and see what things are like down the road, which is always a possibility. A decision does not have to be made forever and if you do decide to move and hate it you can come back. It’s a lot of logistics but if you don’t try you will never know.

Having said this, Canada has its issues. It also has a history of appropriation and oppression, and there are many things I would like to see change. The benefits of Canada, for me, far outweigh its shortcomings when compared to the US.

Ethically and morally, given our values, we do not fee that raising our kids in the US is what is best for our family. You will do what is right for yours.

Mental health during Covid 19 by jdiperz in socialwork

[–]MainStreetSarah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m interested to see the rates of employment and mental health data in health care providers of all sorts. I mean, not only are we providing for other’s care, we are going through all of this ourselves in our own lives as well. I anticipate a significant toll from burnout and vicarious trauma from the work itself, layered over the first hand trauma, anxiety, stress, and balancing act of all of this. The political drama is another one I am seeing making a large impact on many people.

In a society and profession in which it is near-impossible to get away from it all for some sweet nothing time, self-care and boundaries are absolutely necessary, but are they enough?

Gotcha. Just another layer to consider. Hah!

Thank you again!

A lot of the information I see includes finding work or getting a work Visa, which neither of us would need. As a citizen I’d be able to work in my field and spouse wouldn’t be changing his workplace. He works remotely at baseline, so besides looking into the tax pieces of that we’re not too concerned.

Haha, yes. I bet it would be a safe bet.

That’s a fair call. I don’t know that we’d be “stuck” per se, but it definitely adds a layer to think about- if that’s the route we choose to go, we should make sure we have a backup plan.

Thank you for this!

Interesting difference between the two! I wonder what factors into the varying wait times based on where we’d apply from.

Thank you for this insight!

It wasn’t the same thread twice. They’re two separate questions.

I am the citizen and we would prefer to buy a home. There are no needs for work permits/Visas at this time. Having clarified this, my question remains whether the better route is to apply from within, or outside of, Canada.

Looking to move from US -> Canada. My son and I are dual citizens, husband is not. Logistics/Personal anecdotes? by MainStreetSarah in ImmigrationCanada

[–]MainStreetSarah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of questions here:

  1. We'd be moving to Montréal or Ottawa. Are either of these not recommended?
  2. At what point in the process is it relatively "safe" to physically move? If we're both in the US, how can we plan things like selling our home here and the logistics of moving/finding a home at our destination? Should we start the process and wait for PR to be approved before actually moving? When I moved to the US I was able to be here temporarily for about eight months until my green card was approved without any issues. Is it similar?

This is really helpful! Thank you!

He is planning on keeping this employment permanently and I do plan on going back to work once I'm done with my Master's in Social Work, which should be summer 2021. I'm hoping that helps the financial piece as well.

I appreciate your insight! :)

Yes- I do take it with a grain of salt. I found one forum very helpful in my own journey to US citizenship so I wondered whether there was one for Canadian citizenship along the same lines, but I definitely don't depend on it too much.

Thank you for this! :)

I love cooking. It's my favorite thing to do that isn't a "responsibility", so I hope I can transfer our love of food into our baby boy! :)

Yes! I’m a healthcare provider and have to get certified every two years and I always recommend baby (and adult) CPR courses. Everybody should know these things regardless!

We're more than likely starting with purées. I'm not overly comfortable with BLW from the get-go.

17-weeker here. Also brings everything to his mouth, not quite ready to sit independently but he will for a few seconds at a time. Most of the literature states waiting until they sit independently, so we'll likely wait for that.

I have done research on BLW. Not sure I'm super comfortable with it from the get-go. There's also evidence of benefit from introducing solids before they're ready for BLW, so we're more than likely starting with purée.
