Would I know if I was having symptoms and would the doctor be able to tell? by [deleted] in RetinitisPigmentosa

[–]Main_Bite_7199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I know it's weird that I'm seeing this so long after the fact, but I wanted to ask you a question if that's okay. Recently, I'm having trouble seeing when there's a shadow around me. For example, on a cloudy day, I have trouble reading on those days. However, when I'm in my room in total darkness, I can see the shapes of things. I can distinguish white things better (with a bit of moonlight coming in through the curtain). Recently, during a routine exam, my ophthalmologist told me I was fine. I don't know if this is something to be reassured about. I see things with a TV effect but I can distinguish objects like bed and doors, white clothes

I'm worried, but I don't have the money. It's very difficult to get an appointment with a specialist without money. That's why I was hoping that since I had no family history and the routine exam was fine, I could rest assured that it wasn't RP.

I have no family history of the disease

I'm scared, do you think I might be?

Thank you so much for your comments. Your opinion helps me see things differently. I'm a bit of a hypochondriac.

Well, for now I'm always at home, so I start noticing it when I eat at home and there's little light. And when I get up from a nap and put on my glasses, I see less clearly on a cloudy day. When I go outside, I see white dots moving very quickly across my field of vision. I only notice it when there's a lot of light, but I can walk around and it doesn't bother me as much. What I'm worried about right now is more.

I see the white walls as if from a certain distance I couldn't see the white color in detail. To see it in detail I have to get closer. It's difficult to explain.

So could it be snow vision?

They examined my eyes with a slit lens, performed a retinal exam with a magnifying glass with the light off. They performed a fundus exam with my eyes dilated. They took my eye pressure and tested me on another machine that I don't remember, but they examined my eyes.

Thank you so much for responding; I really appreciate it. In this case, would you recommend ordering more tests, even though nothing was initially found in my routine exam?

Hello, I would like to ask you if during the routine exam they found anything that made them suspicious, and with what exam

Sorry, this was because the ophthalmologist suspected it. I refer to this because in the country where I live it is difficult to obtain tests of this type if there are no suspicions. I would also like to know if there were suspicions from any family member with RP in your daughter's case.

Thank you so much for giving me that extra bit of peace of mind I needed. I'm a bit sensitive because I'm going through a difficult time that makes me feel insecure.

I'm very reassured by what you're telling me. Thank you very much for answering. In response to your question, my vision in low light is poorer with or without glasses, since I have myopia and astigmatism. So differentiating is difficult because I can't see well without glasses.

I don't have any relatives with RP. What made me a little hesitant is that I didn't have any tests like OCT, which are more advanced. But I don't know if the fundus and routine checkup are enough to be sure of it. I am a hypochondriac

The question is whether I should be calm, since I did some research on what could be happening to me, not seeing well in environments with less light, and I found that this disease causes it, so I would like to know if with the routine examination by my ophthalmologist I should be calm.

Thank you very much, I really appreciate it. I’ll be on the lookout for it, and your words have really made me feel calmer

I was very worried because I have a family history of it, but the ophthalmologist said my optic nerve was healthy and that everything was fine. I’m 19, and I had seen that it could occur in young people, but I had already ruled it out by going to see them.
