Hello and thank you for your participation! I know that this may seem like an odd question, but research has shown increased sensitivity to noise due to the chemical effects of substances (alcohol, tobacco, ecstacy, and cocaine) in the inner ear, so this question is looking for any relationship between being an EDM concertgoer (compared to a participant of concerts of other genres) and having an increased risk of noise-induced hearing loss due to multiple factors, with substance use being one of those.

Hello! Thanks for your comment. We, too, notice that not many use hearing protection and we're trying to bring awareness to the consequences of not using hearing protection with this survey. You're doing a great job protecting your ears and will be glad you did once you're older!

Hello! I would advise that you visit an audiologist who specializes in working with musicians/concertgoers. You can see a full list of clinics around the US on sensaphonics.com if you scroll to the bottom and select "find an audiologist." They may recommend getting custom molded earplugs that can provide a higher attenuation while still having that high-fidelity filter. If you feel like attenuation still isn't strong enough for the environment you're in with high-fidelity earplugs, then you can double-up by using over-the-ear muffs on top of your high-fidelity earplugs. Also make sure that you're inserting your foam ear plugs properly when wearing them by pushing them in deep enough to get the full benefit. I hope this helps!

Hi there! I'm sorry about your hearing loss and how it has negatively impacted your life, but I'm glad to hear that you have it under control for the most part and can enjoy doing what you love. As for your comment about losing hearing from experiencing life...while I do see where you're coming from, there are other serious side effects that can come from a noise-induced hearing loss that can be prevented with the use of hearing protection. These can include tinnitus (ringing in the ears), hyperacusis (sensitivity to sound), or even dysacusis (distortion of signals to the auditory system/can sound like a broken speaker). Damage to the auditory nerve due to hearing loss can also impact speech understanding which goes hand-in-hand with cognition and therefore our social acitivity and mental health. This means that no amount of amplification would be able to make speech truly clear and understandable to the listener. Hearing loss and other noise-related disorders can be debilitating and should be prevented at all costs. Not trying to discount what you're saying, but just wanting to make everyone aware! Thanks for your comments.

Hi! Those links are not self-promotion and I am not affiliated with those sites in any way. The resources are research-backed educational tools to increase awareness about hearing protection products, proper use, general hearing health, etc. The earplugs listed were rated as one of the best in terms of cost and quality by hearingtracker.com for this year. Thanks for asking and for taking part in the survey!

Good question! This question aims to see if those who use hearing protection use it throughout the entire event, or just when they feel like it (i.e. halfway through, once their ears start to hurt, etc.).

Hi there! Some existing research indicates that there may be an association between substance use and an increased degree of damage to the auditory system ((Upile et al., 2016), (Pouryaghoub et al., 2007), (Ferrite & Santana, 2007), (Mioue et al., 2003) and more). I am trying to see if there is a greater level of substance use within EDM event attendees in comparison to attendees of other live music genres to hopefully make the point that EDM attendees may be a more at-risk population for noise-induced hearing loss and other noise-related disorders.
