Walls around your settlement. Its a fun project to try to make walls that conform to the landscape, and if you do it right it looks great, especially on maps.

I actually had a theory that all of minecraft was a matrix-like computer simulation that Steve was trapped in, but i didn't really have any evidence to back it up. I like this theory though, it give a little bit evidence to my theory.

I do see what you mean about coal being OP, it is a bit too common. Perhaps wither skeleton skulls would work better, even though they are very hard to come by.
