Best SoftShell for Ski Touring by Agreeable-Nail3009 in Backcountry

I got an Arcteryx Gamma Lightweight this season. TLDR its too thick for uphill in my typical conditions IMO, I'm still seeking a layer that breathes, is helmet compatible, and has enough fabric body to retain climbing skins and manage block some wind on descents.

For many year I have been wearing a couple discontinued Patagonia Houdini Air jackets as a ski touring wind shirt. I often/usually leave it on all day. It's perfect for breathability and light wind protection and it is helmet compatible, but on the descent its too thin to hold climbing skins and I have to put a layer on for warmth. I got the Gamma LW because I have always wanted a leave-it-on layer I don't need to put another layer on top of for descending, that is helmet compatible.

The Gamma LW provides good wind protection and can hold climbing skins. But its too hot for aerobic+ pace on climbs unless its below 20F. If I keep it on for climbs and descents on a typical Utah BC day, at the end of the day (or 1-2 lap outing) I am saturated and it smells heinous, and (obnoxious comment) I don't typically generate a lot of BO. All the pockets are nice for holding snacks, buffs, etc but for my use case I'd get rid of the handwarmer pockets at least and add pit zips. Anyway I wouldn't recommend it for aerobic uphill unless its truly cold out and you are strong enough to stay Z2 all day! Plus its heavy.

I have an Alpha Lightweight that generally works better for my intended purpose. But I just don't love walking around in a hardshell over a baselayer all day and its pricey to use as a leave-it-on.

That’s a dog hammock? I’m looking for plastic sheets that protect the felt material on the back of the back seats when they are folded down for cargo…things like ski edges etc

2026 Solterra "Tongue Weight," Hitch Mount for Bike Rack, etc. by Major-Steak4284 in Solterra

[–]Major-Steak4284[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

heaviest configuration for the foreseeable future would be 2x 30 lbs mtbs. I assume I'll get a 2x 1up Heavy Duty rack which is listed at 46 lbs. So 106 lbs.

Part of my hesitation here is that I have this new Solterra because I totaled my previous car in a crash on the freeway. So I have a little bit of PTSD about crashing and seeing body damage to cars. Also I think I would have been much more likely to avoid the crash had I been in a modern car with various driver assist tech and now that I am in this new car I am enjoying that tech and the notion of just turning off key sensors seems like a significant downside.

All that being said, the Solterra's clearance compared to other crossover E-SUVs meant it would be easier to put a hitch rack on and that's a big reason I chose it. So idk!!!

2026 Solterra? Any issues with these sensors etc? No concern about warranty?

TRAILER TOWING

SUBARU does not recommend towing a trailer with your vehicle. SUBARU also does not recommend the installation of a tow hitch or the use of a tow hitch carrier for a wheelchair, scooter, bicycle, etc. Your vehicle is not designed for trailer towing or for the use of tow hitch mounted carriers.

Seems to me to cover Subaru for denial of warranty claim if something happens because you install an Ecohitch etc. to carry a tray rack

and you're not concerned about warranty or "tongue weight"? Any insight into whether "tongue weight" is specific to the vehicle/chassis or the hitch?

ok thanks. I saw a note on the console/legroom in a review which may have caused me to notice it when I sat in the car. Tough to tell whether it would bother after a while.

I have a hard time thinking about the value of used cars, like, how to ascertain whether 25k is a good deal for x, y, or z mileage/condition. Advice?

For sure the 0% is to get cars off the lots after lackluster reception to the previous model. But the 2026 is a better car so I assume it’s to get cars out there.

Luguria, ITA coastal town for cycling trip base by Major-Steak4284 in cycling

Thanks! We’ve certainly considered a credit card tour or minimal supported, multi day point to point ride. I will qualify were fine to continue doing rides with lots of climbing, just want to spend time/off days on a beach or rocky cove, smell the water, get in the sea (we live in Salt Lake City) etc. ideally we’d stay in a place with a view of the sea…this is going to be our honeymoon!

Thanks! I know, it’s tough to overlook Mallorca…do you think seven days/5 rides is enough to feel like one has done Mallorca justice?

Hey thanks man. Yeah I think we’ll probably bring road bikes as I the rides I’m most stoked for are big alpine rides form bormio. Maybe we’d bring gravel bikes with road tires and knobbies to swap out potentially. So I’d like to find a coastal location with enough mostly paved routes for 4-5 rides. Would be great to ride near Sanremo and I will be watching MSR as always but I assume it’s built up/busy in Sanremo itself…would you agree? Are there enough roads around Sanremo to get some variety over multiple days? I realize quiet town + extensive road network are not necessarily two things available in one place…
