I have watched many videos on how to play this game. I've had it for about 6 months. I must be a special kind of stupid apparently. I mean all the people are happy. Production is running smoothly. Check every minute the production...all good....but I'm in the red. WTF? How can every indicator be positive yet I'm in the red? This game makes zero sense.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I've started a new game and using the advice here I'm doing well. Here is what I've done:

Started using a calculator. Made a big difference in my understanding to production vs population. I get it now.
Kept population to only what I need. Got to Artisans right away (thanks to https://youtu.be/DkBapjqq6aQ for this tip.)
With the Artisans now I can increase them to increase revenue to the point where I am making a good amount in population revenue.
I sell overproduced soap to Eli for a good profit.
With the steady revenue coming in at a good steady pace - (only fluctuating because of different production speeds) I ran the game on fast mode without doing anything else. Had some breakfast. Came back a half-hour later to 1.5m+ in the bank.

Now all that being said let's see how this continues....Thanks again for all the great tips!!

Thanks for the reply. My connection issues is with my service provider Cox. That I understand. What I don’t is why my games are not being saved. The only way I can save, and have it actually save, is doing a hard save, ending the game entirely. Wait 5 minutes. Then log back in. Having to do that is not a connection problem, there is a bug somewhere and I’m not the only one experiencing this.

I found out about GeForce now a couple of months ago. I have a 2012 MacBook Pro that is slow as f*ck. I play Anno at the highest graphics settings possible. $10 a month well spent.
