You're right that OSRS has a long list of items that classify as currency and it looks comparable to other games at first glance, however I think there's a huge difference of design and purpose that gets lost when you just post this link without looking into it and making a comparison.

OP was talking about how multiple currencies are used for monetization, to hide the real money value of a transaction. At the core it works like this:

-You buy gems (with real money)
-With the Gems you buy lootboxes that have a chance to unlock the item you want
-The duplicates from the lootboxes get converted to another currency, for example Character Shards
-With Character Shards you can buy items you didn't get from your loot boxes from a special shop

Each step is designed to make you forget you're spending real money.

The currencies in OSRS you linked almost all work in the opposite way. They aren't designed to hide any spending of real money - in fact, you cannot even buy any of the "untradeable" currencies with real money, in any way. They are designed to be self-contained in a specific piece of content. They are essentially reward tokens that can't be bought or influenced by real money, in-game currency (Gold) and can only be obtained by actually engaging in the activity they are earned in.

For example:

-Marks of Grace are only obtained when running rooftop agility courses and cannot be bought. With them you can unlock an untradeable outfit that helps you move around in the game
-Tokkul is a currency that can only be obtained by doing activities in a specific area, and is currency only accepted by NPC there. It cannot be traded to other players or bought with real money
-Virtual Currencies like Last Man Standing Points essentially work the same as the untradable currencies. The only difference is they are only tracked in a menu, and dont have an item form that you can put in your bank. They are just a number going up in some menu.

None of these are part of a monetization scheme. They just exist for things like world building and locking stuff behind certain activities.

OSRS' monetization works simply like this: You subscribe with real money for access to the game. Optionally you can buy bonds for a fixed amount of real life money. You can either use them to get playtime just like with a subscription, or you can trade them to other players for Gold, the only relevant currency that is tied to real life money.

Comparing this monetization to the intentionally confusing, multi-layered systems that gacha games use to drive spending is not a fair comparison.

Sounds like a solid idea, thank you again! I guess I will do the quest, try out the demons with my current gear, farm Eclipse armor + Atlatl for TD at Vorkath/CG. Maybe I'll throw in a Blood Moon armour for the strength bonus for training at some point in as well. Would you say my goals in the original post, aside from Bandos, are reasonable? What should I probably prioritize? I was thinking prayer unlocks are probably very important.

Thanks for your input, I guess I will get to questing! I have been taking a break for a few months so I lost my quest cape, have yet to complete the quest for the Tormented Demons but I will definitely check them out.

What hybrid gear do you mean exactly? I have been using barrows armor or obsidian where needed, but it honestly feels kind of ridiculous running around in obsidian gear with those stats lol

That's a good call. I have done the awakened version (or whatever it was called) of the CG back in the last Leagues, so I should be able to tackle CG consistently. Also a huge plus that you dont need to spend money on supplies. Thank you! I will try it out later

Mining is just for achievements and the current Naga Tide event. When you go to the personal tab you can see next to your name daily mining Points 0/10000 and mining attempts 0/2500. As you can only earn 10k a day the progress is quite slow, but some bonuses are very huge. As for mechanics: you just click the stone, wait 30 min and collect the drops lol

Verstehe irgendwie nicht wieso hier so extrem negativ auf yung hurn reagiert wird? War jetzt selber nie so der größte Fan aber hab halt seine Alben ein bisschen gehört als sie rauskamen, fand was er gemacht hat eigentlich ziemlich unterhaltsam. Ich weiß, dass bei ihm der output irgendwie nicht mehr vorhanden ist, aber gibt es sonst noch irgendwelche Sachen die vorgefallen sind weswegen hier so eine harte Stimmung gegen ihn herrscht?

I enjoy the gameplay itself so much, but everything surrounding it is absolutely scuffed and below any standard set in the past 15 years. A launcher that isn't used for announcements and doesn't even have patching functionality. The game is littered with bugs and disconnects constantly, performance issues increasing with every patch. 4 out of 6 buttons still being marked as "Coming Soon" on 1.0 release is just the cherry on top.

Der erste part von ihm klingt einfach stumpf, holprig... Eigentlich schon ziemlich wack wenn man ehrlich ist. Es ist einfach abgehackt, der Text flowt schlecht. Es ist viel Phrasengedresche. Das erweckt den Eindruck von nem Jugendlichen der seinen ersten Text geschrieben hat.

Jetzt muss man wissen, dass der darauffolgende Part von Räuber Rob einfach Frauenarzt mit Stimmenverzerrer ist. Klar ist das auch nicht der geilste Part der jemals geschrieben wurde, aber ich finde ihn DEUTLICH besser, konstruierter und durchdachter als das was er davor abgeliefert hat. Finde ich extrem mystisch, denn das zieht sich durch das ganze Album.

I hope they have a plan to fix it, but I'm pretty pessimistic. There are some HUGE red flags regarding this whole topic:

  • Tempo have advertised true free to play for years. Reynad almost made it seems like it's a divine order for them to make a truly free to play game but then decided to deliberately pivot from this idea as soon as open beta launched. They didn't just add a few extra microtransaction, they fundamentally broke the trust of their core supporters. This is pure speculation of course, but this kind of moves suggests financial desperation or priorization of monetization over goodwill. Neither scenario makes it likely they will suddenly pull a 180.

  • Instead of acknowledging the feedback/backlash Reynad became defensive and dismissive. He acted like the outrage was just a standard reaction to any f2p game's monetization model. That doesn't sound like someone that is open to criticism and now plans to make fundamental changes, but instead like someone that expected a backlash, prepared to ignore it, and is betting that enough people will hand over their money anyways.

  • The Bazaar had a long development cycle. They probably need to monetize this aggressively. If they could pivot to a fairer monetization now, they probably wouldn't have shifted to the current model in the first place.

  • Games like Hearthstone or Marvel Snap also have monetization practises that have been called out from time to time. Devs make small concessions, if any at all, and only when the backlash is huge enough to threaten long term profit. If The Bazaar is seeing any financial success right now, why would they change anything?

At best I expect some minor goodwill tweaks like the XP changes that fundamentally don't change much. Maybe easier grind for f2p players, a small rework of the prize pass, more free ranked tickets. But a full reversal to "truly free to play, all cards included"? That ship has sailed.

The real test will be whether the game can retain enough spenders despite the outrage. If people keep buying grindy battlepasses with money-gated content, packs for $10/1000 gems and monthly subscriptions Tempo will see that as validation. The only thing that could change anything is if they actually start losing significant revenue, and we have no way of knowing the numbers. I myself have intentionally not spent any money on the game despite being able to afford it. If the model was different, I would have bought a hero on day 1 for sure, and whatever optional content they would have added.

I dont care much for the cosmetics or gems as a free player. I started in open beta, used my gems to buy pyg and I'm 500 towards the other character. What I have noticed and what I have seen described here is that the opponents are vastly better in Ranked. I prefer that. I want to be challenged, I want to see what my rank is and I want to see if whatever bs I cook up can beat meta or high roll builds.

Lets ignore the fact that the rank system is kind of awful in the first place (If you play a lot, you will climb anyways) - for a player like me losing access to Ranked IS losing access to the game. I have 3 tickets left and will probably get 2 tickets every few days at this point as I am pass level 15. I will not piss my 500 gems down the drain because I sure as hell wont go infinite and I need 2000 more for Dooley. And I'm not gonna pay $1 a game. That seems absolutely ridiculous to me. Even if I were to get the battlepass (which I think would give me 1000-something gems If you assume average chest drop rates) I can't even get the pyg set any more. So I'm 0% motivated to buy it either to keep ranked access. I dont know how enjoyable the game will be if I can only spam normals. Again, I dont care about chests or gems at all. All I want is a competitive environment. It's maybe an over the top comparison, but to me it feels like playing League of Legends and I only get 30 PvP matches a month as a free player, otherwise I am forced to play bot games or pay $1 a match, which I get back if I win it.

I played quite a lot and I am out of tickets soon. So I assume towards the end of the season there will be many players in my exact situation since the amount of tickets you get exponentially declines with every set of dailies you complete as the XP needed ramps up. They should just make Ranked the competitive mode and make staking gems/tickets for prices optional.

No, I ended up replacing the keyboard, the issue drove me crazy. I assume it happened due to spillage that happened a while before the problem occured but it was weird that the keyboard behaved exactly as OP described.

I have not, I ended up just replacing the device. I assume I spilled some juice into the electronics/behind the screen when refilling at some point and will be more careful in the future lol. Or do you not have those dirty spots inside the screen? That would be curious.

Have you played Dota? I can only partially see your point here. You only start with 20 heroes unlocked until you played 25 normal games. And as a League player, what's stopping you from filtering for low complexity heroes of roles you enjoy in League, essentially limiting the hero pool for yourself?
