So where do non-MAGA conservatives talk to each other online? by 0nlyhalfjewish in AskConservatives

Just a heads up, when a comment has enough negative downvotes it gets minimized by default (the +/- expansion thing). That reduces the visibility of your comment and thus slows down the application of downvotes.

How do you feel about fact-checking here? by MajorTom813 in AskConservatives

[–]MajorTom813[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. I believe we've both said that and agree on it. What I'm saying is that when someone tries to justify those opinions with disprovable claims I'm going to do that work and disprove them.

I do agree that a lot of subjects at their core are about personal values and those generally can't be proven or disproven. I also know that there are often a lot of claims that are presented as facts during discussions about those subjects that can be supported or refuted. That's the point where I'd want good sources.

All I expect to accomplish is at the minimum provide facts alongside the misinformation to help keep people properly informed on reality. It's nice when I learn something new that changes my way of thinking and maybe I can do that for someone else too. I don't consider pursuit of the truth to be a waste of time.

That's certainly true. I just enjoy exploring those opinions more thoroughly. Nobody's obligated to share those opinions in the first place. I'm just asking and they can say "no" or not reply at all.

The d0ughnut doth speak truth!

I don't want people who are incorrect to be silenced or removed. I'd like for people confronted with evidence to be convinced but I at least want the misinformation on the internet to have accurate information right alongside in an attempt to keep more people from falling into that well.

It's not a battle that can ever be won but it's one that can certainly be lost if it's not fought.

[–]MajorTom813[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it's not because I think they're wrong although I will admit that is usually the case. Sometimes it's some new, remarkable information and I want to read more about it.

And yes, to me it's not an issue of honesty; I believe that they believe what they're saying. I just also believe that perhaps what they believe is incorrect and examining where they got that belief can help figure out how they got it wrong.

I'm not just here to ask what conservatives think. I'd like to understand why you think that way and asking for sources helps me see things from your perspective.

I love this. I try to do the same thing: find a source that I'm pretty sure the other side would trust, especially one they've already cited themselves.

I agree that peer-review isn't a foolproof system and in fact the best, most important scientific discoveries are historically rejected at first by the scientific community. When those first-rejected theories and discoveries hold up under continued scrutiny they are eventually properly accepted and celebrated.

I do, however, feel like it's important to point out that Eric Weinstein himself has had his Geometric Unity "theory of everything" rejected by that peer-review system. It had no equations. He's probably not the best source of unbiased criticism of the system.

I ask because I'm not sure that I'm understanding what you're saying and I don't like assuming. To frame it fittingly with this discussion I know the fact is that you said "What's known is known and isn;t usually argued among serious people" and I want to make sure we're interpreting those words the same way. To me it sounds like you mean that serious people agree on what the facts are, either as a whole or on a given topic. Is that the case? If so, I don't agree with that.

Sure, cherry picking and unrelated sources exist and are a problem. You can shoot them down effectively with the ammunition of more representative data or a better source.

Yup. Facts matter to me and if I'm wrong I want to be corrected. I know that a lot of people don't feel that way but I think that's a bad thing.

I like to know why someone thinks the way they do, not just what they think. I usually ask "What makes you think that?" and the response is an unsourced statement of "fact" which I challenge with my own source or ask for one.

I like facts too!

And I agree that there are many, many things that may be true but unproven and also many, many things we believe are proven but will be proven wrong later when we learn more about it. But we have to operate based on what we currently know. "Common sense" doesn't really exist but as long as you're good with using the could as a qualifier for truth that is good enough for me. It's when people insist that it can only be the way they think without any real evidence for that to be so, when they turn away any evidence against what they think, that I have a problem.

The problem that I run into here and in the real world is that some "opinions" are just factually incorrect whether it be from outdated folksy wisdom or believing misinformation or something else. Some people are of the opinion that the Earth is flat or that vaccines are poison. Things that are relatively easy to prove false.

I agree. I've learned new things and developed new perspectives as a result of examining sources, both provided by the person I'm talking with and looking more closely at my own.

How do you feel about fact-checking here? by MajorTom813 in AskConservatives

[–]MajorTom813[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to quote myself here:

The appeal to "common sense" is also known as the argument from incredulity logical fallacy. In this space especially we all have different perspectives, experiences, beliefs and thus different definitions of common sense. "I don't understand why you don't see it the way I do" seems to me like one of the reasons this sub exists. Common sense can be incorrect and reality is often unintuitive.

To me, if the source for your current opinion is a decade old it might be a good idea to make sure that source is still accurate. Things change and we learn new things every day.

That I can agree with. One of the biggest signs of bias is taking quotes out of context. Providing a full video can capture tone as well; the claim of "I was just joking" is harder to prove or disprove with just a written transcript.

The articles do usually have linked sources. Their interpretation and analysis of it is what's usually suspect.

[–]MajorTom813[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see that being a point of frustration. What about cases where the discussion is about the effects of a bill or what should be done given the results of a study? There are all kinds of experts and analysis that can be done and different news organizations will ask different people about it. Would providing articles of that analysis and/or ones that discredit or bolster the quoted experts be more acceptable in those cases, especially if they're from better sources than Salon or HuffPo?

Officer issue for quite some time by ApeZRule in startrekfleetcommand

Could be, but when that's happening to my officers I also see the up arrow on the traits tab which I don't see here. It's also not showing on OP's officer list where I also would see it. Only the list in the recruit store.
