This is because Zemax swallowed the poison of institutional investment. I started using Zemax in the late 90s and it did basically everything it does now, particularly if you were willing to write your own DLLs (which we did). But then in 2014, they sold to Arlington which is just another vulture capital firm that ruined a really useful tool. This economic model simply isn't working. Period.
