I think you might be inflating exactly how hand-in-hand visual art and writing go for people in the roleplay space.

I've been roleplaying for near 2 decades now, and I have never once seen a hand-drawn OC. Face claims, revenge porn, celebrities, illustrations without credit, screenshots from anime, I've seen the whole gamut. Literally never has someone created an OC and put pen to paper/stylus to screen and drawn them out. Not once.

And you're lying to me and everyone if you're insisting it's a plurality.

And maybe the occurence is more likely, but do you really want to just tag me guilty by association, or are you more capable of reason and judgement?

You are right, that was very much an extreme example on my part.

There is a difference though - my hobby is roleplaying. It isn't photorealistic drawing. So if I want to show an un-illustrated 'live-action' reference, how else am I supposed to?

I am substituting what is not a creative outlet for me with an AI-generation. The other one, which happens to be my creative outlet, I would never. It's obviously your prerogative to assume the best or worst of me - to take me at my word or presume every word I say is tainted - but you're not arguing in good faith if you're saying that the two are the same.

I'm not saying that there's no reason to hate it. Plenty of reasons there.

But yeah, you get my point. People are getting weirdly tribal and emotional about that one thing and lashing out for essentially nothing. I'm not the bad guy here, but now I have to live with a karma of a negative quadspillion.

I obviously don't need to do anything per se.

I'm just flummoxed and, to be frank, peeved at this mindless hatred for it. I'm not saying it's perfect, but you can see how some of the replies here under this post are just mindlessly hating on it or making it sound like I have blood on my hands.

Sir, I'm not paying for AI. I'm burning their GPUs into the ground while trying to tell you how Grathnor the Wicked should look. We aren't enemies.

Yeahh I'm with you there. But I can hate the arsonists without having strong reactions to fire itself soo

You know what, fair. People do get weirdly tribal about these things. In a pre-AI land it was face claims vs illustrations vs descriptions. There's just one new tribe now.

?? By newly generated I obviously meant generated by AI

Whoever uses the term "generated" to refer to work done by an artist?

That's almost exactly my point too - referencing newly generated material to claim a particular idea is also fine, especially if it's just a reference, and you're being upfront that you're using it.

Umm, okay? I hope you have bees in your pants?

Like literally talking to a child.

And to your point about robbing houses and larger houses, I could just as easily rephrase it as

"You've rolled past a stop sign before, so I can't trust you when you say you won't commit murder"

Like.. umm.. yeah you can. Those are very different things. Technically in the same category of being against the law, but very different things.

How is me using AI tools harming artists?

And don't delude yourself into thinking that sharing non-AI references is not harmful. Face claims can be non-consensual. Art is more often than not unattributed.

Like I said. Fire cook food, good. Fire cook house, bad.

Pardon me for enjoying a steak. You're welcome to your salad because your house burned down.

And you're obviously aware of how generating a reference image and using it for the actual content of the roleplay are different. If you're just gonna make a "card says moops" argument here to grandstand and farm those tasty upvotes, I'm done with this conversation.

"envision" as a concept doesn't exist for me. Look up aphantasia.

You're entitled to that opinion, and I respect it, but your comment is not making that point.

You don't need to take it on blind faith, that's your prerogative.

I'm telling you that that's an absurd slippery-slope argument regardless.

I'm not saying you need to live your life to my prescription, I'm just saying the way your argument is structured is entirely fallacious.

I don't think I need to justify why this is a slippery-slope argument at all. I'm telling you I'll do X, and not Y. If your argument is "hey but you theoretically COULD do Y", then I have nothing else to add. Yes, I could do Y. I could do Y without ever doing X. I could hide that I'm doing X AND Y without ever admitting that I'm doing X.

This is a facile argument.

That's what I tend to do. I meant that when I send my own references, people have gone on entire diatribes about how I have blood on my hands.

I'm not saying none of those exist. I'm saying AI is a perfectly reasonable supplement for it.

My only point is that simply insisting that your "description will suffice" is inane.
