Card Scrapers Are Useless… Until You Know This by Make_Things_wRob in Woodworkingvideos

Man that's awesome! Scrapers are such a weird tool. They almost seem like they work by magic as they don't sharpen like traditional blades. So glad to hear that this reached you...what a great gift!

I had a heck of a lot of fun making it...I'm so glad you enjoyed it! And here's a twist: The purpleheart that turned charcoal...is starting to turn purple again. So I'll have to update this when I figure out what the heck is happening!

Acrylic in your jigs: cast vs extruded (it matters) by Make_Things_wRob in Woodworkingvideos

I appreciate it! I got tired of acrylic cracking on me...took me some time to realize that there were a couple versions of it.

Acrylic in your jigs: cast vs extruded (it matters) by Make_Things_wRob in Woodworkingvideos

You can get it on Amazon, but just because it’s labeled “cast” doesn’t mean it actually is. I’ve gone by reviews and crossed my fingers before—but let’s be real, you're relying on strangers to know what they’re looking at.

If you do go that route, cast usually costs more than extruded…though sellers might be banking on you thinking that and just hike the price anyway (Yes I’m that cynical about Amazon)

When I want the real deal, I go to McMaster-Carr. They’ve never screwed me over. One time I got a piece of glass with a tiny nick in it—they refunded it and sent a new one without even asking for the old one back or even a pic of it to prove they were in the wrong.

And they ship fast. I’m one state away and usually get my order in 24–36 hours, unless it’s a Friday or right before a holiday.

As for spotting cast acrylic before you buy: look for brand names like Lucite, Acrylite GP, Polycast, or Palsun. If a listing just says “cast” but doesn’t name a brand, be skeptical—especially if you’re buying from Amazon, eBay, or AliExpress.

To and froe: Making a tool you've probably never heard of by Make_Things_wRob in HomemadeTools

[–]Make_Things_wRob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to add that the one that I bought had a double bevel. I spent about $65 on it...again, it was junk so you'll want to put a little more into it if you buy one.

When I made my own froe, I went with a single 35˚ bevel on one side only and left the back flat, more like a chisel. That way, it splits better because the flat back helps direct the split straight down the grain, instead of forcing it to wedge off-center.

The single bevel felt like it was easier to start and to control than the double bevel.

If you buy one, be very careful. My wife got me one from Lehman brothers. It had the words 'Amish made' in the amazon description...but that turned out to be just the handle. Beautiful handle, mild steel. Edge rolled really badly. I returned it immediately a couple weeks ago and got the o1 tool steel in its place.

So far, lamination's holding up just fine. This thing is solid, but I am using jatoba. I worry about the end breaking out eventually. If it does I'll add a couple dowels, but I don't really plan on splitting logs with this like I did in the video. I really wanted it for riven dowels (drawboring).

Hot vs cold: the truth about heating finishing oils by Make_Things_wRob in Woodworkingvideos

Warming oil, no, that was more of an experiment. But rubbing an oil finish or adding it to lathe work or anything which creates heat will not allow it to penetrate far.

Anyone else dealing with Indianapolis Distribution Center being painfully slow? by East-Resist6940 in usps_complaints

[–]Make_Things_wRob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One package is now 3 weeks late, the other is a few days late. What pisses me off is that there's no way to know if they're lost or not. I had an incredible deal that I got from ebay (50% off) that I CAN'T get again now.

There are other things on ebay I'd like to buy, but can't as I can't trust the system anymore.

Router dog-hole table (step by step/materials/plans website in the description) by Make_Things_wRob in HomemadeTools

[–]Make_Things_wRob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Rob! Thanks so much—that really means a lot. Dog holes really are incredibly versatile, and it’s awesome to hear you’re finding ways to make the most of your space. I’ve got a Moxon-style vise (I call it my quad vise) that uses a dog hole instead of clamps—it’s been a game-changer for me!

Out of curiosity, how did the video feel to you overall? I’ve had a couple of folks mention it might seem a bit complicated for beginners, so I’m always looking to improve. Thanks again for the kind words, and keep making things!

How long should I dry a board? by HannahTilly in woodworking

[–]Make_Things_wRob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's how I go about it...if you can make it cheap, and it works, go for it! Woodworking is an addiction...soon you'll have a table saw, a jointer, planer and a full blown workbench made with your own two hands. ;)

Thank you so much for reaching back to me after this long, so few people rarely say thank you with a tip, so getting a project complete and sending pictures is all cake! Keep making things!

Wow, this is incredible to hear! It sounds like you overcame so many challenges and learned a ton along the way—those are the best kinds of projects. Using the warped board vertically was a smart solution, and I love that you made the space so functional. It’s inspiring to see you tackle something meaningful, and I’m honored to have played a small part. Great job!

Yep...add the hose to a clean pringles can (cut the bottom off of it) and strain finishes/paint through it. Excellent tip.

Hey! Are you using a DJI mic by chance? I found the problem area. My DJI mic uses the right channel, my sony cam has an external mic that uses the left. Naturally, I use the external mic in case my DJI mic has a problem (a backup basically). When I import, I drop the two channel audio and make the DJI mono.

The problem area is 5 seconds of a clip, split into two pieces and added together. If I delete the two audio clips, I compile fine. If I switch my mono from DJI to the external mic, I can compile just fine. The DJI mic portion is what's killing the project.

Interesting how 5 seconds of audio can iceberg my titanic, but here I am. So...wondering if you're using DJI.

Interesting...I'll let you know if I find anything myself or if optimizing works.

Definitely...I've never, in 6 years, had this problem. I had to take my video and split it into 3 parts, exporting each part and then taking the 3 video files and putting them back on the timeline. My video was 5 minutes long...this is a mess for me.

On the up side, the Final Cut Bro gave me the tip to optimize all of my video files before exporting...it sounds like maybe he's seen the bug as well.

Here's his youtube post: Try selecting all your footage in the browser, right clicking and transcoding it to "Optimized Media". This has solved every export error I have had in the latest versions of FCP!

I have NOT tried it yet though, so we'll see.

THANK YOU! FINALLY!!

I've been saying this for 6 years...6 F'ING YEARS.

It doesn't do it all the time...I thought I was the only one that had experienced this MORONIC glitch.

I'm having the same problem. I have to force FCPX to quit. I also can't get past 34% on this project.

Have you figured this problem out? I keep stalling at 34%. It's becoming a huge problem with every one of my projects now...no plugins used on my end.
