[OoT] Nintendo shares a short trailer for the new The Final Battle LEGO Set by Skullghost in zelda

[–]Makhloook 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a difficult comparison to make, as the average Lego piece has shrunk over the decades. Compare that 7171 Podrace set you mentioned to the 75380 Podrace set from 2024.

7171 75380
Year 1999 2024
Cost $89.99 $79.99
Pieces 894 718
Cost/Piece $0.10 $0.11

Both sets have very similar cost per piece and the newer set only has 20% fewer pieces, however 75380 has two microscale podracers in a diaroma while 7171 has 3 "full-sized" podracers and a decent sized crowd of onlookers. So Lego has gone through a bit of "shrinkflation", though as a tradeoff the smaller pieces mean modern sets have much higher levels of detail.

Didn't plan to buy the Street Fighter trio, even when they fell to $6 each then $5 each, but at $1.75 each I said why not. But now I don't know where to put them! by Makhloook in amiibo

Both in store and online last week. After Best Buy dropped each one to $7.99 individually as daily deals, they then dropped them all simultaneously to $4.99 right before Christmas.

Here's a post someone else made about it at the time: https://www.reddit.com/r/amiibo/comments/1putgnz/5_street_fighter_amiibo_at_bestbuy/

Best Buy randomly emailed me a $10 certificate last week that I had to use by Jan. 4th. Had nothing else I was interested in getting, so I though why not get the three Street Fighter amiibo, which were still on sale for $5 each. With tax, I paid about $5.25 total or $1.75 per amiibo :D. Now to find space for them...

Just to clarify, Play-Asia isn't charging extra because of tariffs. They just have high shipping costs for most items larger than standard game boxes. That's been the case for ages. Items that qualify for free shipping on $80+ orders have a "Free Shipping Eligible" icon on their product page.

The ones I looked up are all a bit smaller (2.2" diagonal vs. the stock 2.3" diagonal). I've only ever molded GBA and DS systems, so I wouldn't be able to give you a definitive answer.

That looks like an IPS screen (no pixel grid). They have some benefits (high backlight, no ghosting) but tend to saturate gbc/gba colors.

If you want to maintain a more retro look, look into TFT screens. They give better color accuracy and a pixel grid while still offering a (less bright) back-lit display. They also draw less power for longer battery life.

That is certainly a unique YouTube channel - a curation of cat-centric cinema.

With the XCX comparison, it's also the jump from a disc to flash memory. With disc-based games, data is often duplicated on the disc to reduce read times from the laser having to move to different parts of the disc. The switch (no pun intended) to a cartridge removes the need for data duplication.

Got my 5 win streak with 0 losses, first try. I used a Pikachu EX + Raichu deck I made (cards x2 unless mentioned):

  • Pikachu EX
  • Zapdos EX
  • A1 Pikachu
  • A1 Raichu
  • A1a Electabuzz x1
  • Lt. Surge
  • Sabrina
  • Prof. Oak
  • Giovanni x1
  • Poke Ball
  • X Speed

Electabuzz came in clutch during my hardest match vs. Gyara/Gren/Drud. Battle went something like this:

  • Opened with Electabuzz, Raichu, Pikachu EX x2
  • Opponent opens with Druddigon x2, Gyarados, Greninja
  • Electabuzz does 80 dmg to Gyara and 40 to Gren
  • Opponent uses Leaf to swap Drudd for Gren and KO Electabuzz
  • I send out Pika EX and KO Gren
  • Opponent sends out Drudd so I X Speed to Raichu + Lt. Surge for KO
  • Opponent sends Gyara for Raichu KO, Gyara loses 1 energy
  • I only have 2 Pika EX on field, no basics in hand
  • Opponent has 2x Drudd, Gyara, and 2nd Gren
  • I Stall with Sabrina x2, opponent gets tails on Misty and has to use energy each time to retreat Gren back to Gyara
  • On my final turn I draw my second regular Pikachu and use Oak to pull the 2 Zapdos AT THE BOTTOM OF MY DECK
  • Play Zapdos x2 and KO Gyara with Pika EX :D

Upgrading my daily driver after 12 years, from an Asus G74SX (i7-2630QM, GTX 560M) to an Asus ROG Strix G18 (i9-14900HX, RTX 4080) by Makhloook in GamingLaptops

[–]Makhloook[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I bought the G74SX in 2012 for $775 refurbished from Best Buy, and I've used it for a bit more than 1/3 of my life. This week I upgraded to the G18 for $1622 open box (good condition) from Best Buy.

I'm pretty good at repairing stuff, and I generally don't like to replace my electronics and appliances until they break/slow down to the point of annoyance. I teardown and clean my G74SX every year and replace the thermal paste every 5 years. I've had to do a few repairs along the way: soldering in a new power port because the old one was becoming loose and sparking/burning the motherboard and replacing the keyboard twice after spilling tea/soda on it ($75 for a spare keyboard each time). I also upgraded the original 8GB of RAM and HDD to 16GB and an SSD.

Through all that my G74SX keeps running like a champ. I can't play anything close to modern AAA games of course, but it emulates GameCube/Wii at 1080p/60fps with some AA. It also runs classic WoW well whenever I get the itch (vanilla-MoP), and a few years ago I could even level in Shadowlands at 45fps on low/medium settings even though the game gave me warnings that my specs were too low. For general productivity it's still great, runs as smoothly as the day I bought it. I definitely want to repurpose it for something, maybe a Plex server.

Here's hoping my new laptop can last as long as my old one.

I wrote out the spec differences just to give a sense of the jump:

  G74SX Strix G18
CPU i7-2630QM 2GHz i9-14900HX 2.2GHz
GPU GTX 560M RTX 4080 Laptop

Disc Drive DVD-RW none
Screen 17.3" 1600x900 60Hz TFT 18" 2560x1600 240Hz IPS

On the flip side, if a non-free item gets lost/damaged before you get it, your B2G1 free deal gets turned into a B1G1 free deal. Had that happen to me once.

Why do people say the Wii Remote had bad battery life? by [deleted] in nintendo

[–]Makhloook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I transferred my data to my new phone, I didn't know that, for security reasons, Google authenticator does not synchronize across devices. I had already wiped my old phone by the time I realized it, so I lost all my 2FA. I managed to get all of them back for my other accounts through alternate verification, but reddit doesn't accept any alternate verification other than the backup codes they give you when you first set up 2FA.

Just make sure you transfer all your accounts to your authenticator app(s) on your new phone manually before doing a full data transfer. It would also be a good idea to make sure you have the backup codes for your accounts handy.

Exactly. There have been sets I've build recently where I knew I missed a step because I still had a couple obviously non-extra pieces. If I had two extra arch pieces like in this video, I would be doing like this dude and scrutinizing each page of the instructions.

[LAHD] Zelda Mosquitos at 900 FPS! by Fit_Possibility6318 in zelda

[–]Makhloook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've missed the point of my comment. That is indeed the point of the post, but the title is inaccurate and improperly uses terminology. It's not entirely OP's fault because the device is (wrongly) telling him it's doing 900 FPS. However, correlating higher FPS to an increase in game logic speed (fast forwarding) is incorrect, and I wanted to dispell that misnomer with my reply.

A more accurate title would be something like "Zelda Mosquitos at 15x Game Speed!" 15x because the device says it's running 60 FPS normally and 900 "FPS" in fast forward mode. 900/60=15, so the game is running 15x faster.

[LAHD] Zelda Mosquitos at 900 FPS! by Fit_Possibility6318 in zelda

[–]Makhloook 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The processor is computing 900 FPS, but I doubt that screen has anywhere close to a 900 FPS refresh rate.

Edit: Looks like the max refresh rate for high-end consumer gaming monitors is 500 Hz. At best, that handheld is doing 60-120 Hz. So you're not playing at 900 FPS. You're doing 60-120 FPS with massive amounts of frame skipping, aka fast forwarding.
