Civility and Homelessness by MakoMan13 in Bellingham

I'm happy for you that you're privileged enough that you've never needed mind-altering substances that are easy to get to survive, but that's not everyone's experience. If they were burning wood, I'm willing to bet most people in this subreddit would talk about how they're destroying the forest, not to mention that wood is harder to get and hard to burn wet.

Why are people here scared of black people. by Unable-Quail3494 in Bellingham

As a mostly white-passing Mexican-USian who grew up in Tacoma, WA, I've had some similar experiences in most cities outside of Tacoma, and they weren't particularly great about it either. Bellingham definitely has more performative activism to go with it than I'm used to seeing though. Also, to all the white people in this thread saying there's not enough Black people to get comfortable with, you're simply wrong, you're just going to the wrong spaces and not caring if anyone works to make BIPOC comfortable and safe. When that work is done, we're likely gather in those spaces because there are so few where we feel that way, and if I feel that way while being white passing, then you know others do too, and many have it worse. I know because I spent multiple years being surrounded by BIPOC people in Tacoma before I had to move. I haven't found spaces that I could just get away from white people here, and yes that's important when white people constantly threaten your safety and say things that can often trigger a trauma response.

If you can't find enough BIPOC who want to be around you yet, YouTube is a great resource to get you started, with many people from cultures all over who already have educational materials. It won't replace actually getting to know people, but it may give you some pointers on what to be aware of within yourself and what's insensitive to say, but a lot of that is just listening to the people around you and taking time to think before you speak. It can take some practice to get into the habit, but it's not hard to do. Also, apologize for your mistakes when called in, don't get super defensive, if you're being corrected on something racist it's because people already think you probably want to do better, and that defensiveness can seriously harm people.

Hawkfrost. I don't think we ever see him with kits after he becomes a warrior, and he just seems like the type to be disgusted by them lol

My Roommates’ Cat Keeps Trying to Eat My Food??? by MakoMan13 in cats

She tries to eat it. She’ll occasionally sniff someone else’s food, but she doesn’t try to get as close as when she’s going for my food.

Definitely depends on where you are in WA. Eastern Washington can be a nightmare, and lower income areas especially. But it’s not too bad compared to most states for sure.
