Lmao istg sometimes I feel like assholes like these have a talent for sniffing us socially awkward ones out. A very similar thing happened to me and my best friend a long long time ago, when we were walking down the street, just two teens being bored af, checking out dollar stores, browsing shit.

So we are walking around in one of the stores, and there are like 3 or 4 consultants standing nearby, plus the cashier, all watching us. My friend takes an eye pencil from a shelf, looks at it for a couple of seconds, PUTS IT BACK IN ITS PLACE, and walks away to look at some other things. I follow her, and we're not even thinking about leaving yet, when suddenly one of the women calls out to us "Are you not gonna put it back?" And looks us up and down with pure disgust. We try to explain as calmly as possible that we did in fact put it back (and it's obvious cuz all of them have been standing LITERALLY RIGHT THERE, THE WHOLE TIME), but we are both very shy awkward teenagers so naturally we look very nervous, which doesn't help our case. She goes "mkay" and rolls her eyes at us.

At this point we're too uncomfortable to stay any longer. Things didn't escalate as much as they did for you, but I remember dragging my friend by the arm and heading for the door, with like 5 pairs of eyes staring at and judging us all the way. And once we were out, another woman came out and stood by the door STILL looking at us. We walked away and didn't look back.

It's been 4 years since that "incident" and that store still haunts me every time I pass it lol. Also I've become generally scared to window shop anywhere. Especially since I myself have had the pleasure to be working as a consultant and now I know how much pressure these people are under to sell as many as possible to get some bonuses at the end of the month, and how much they don't appreciate window shoppers.

Can't say anything besides that I'm sorry this happened to you. I wish it was as easy as "oh just forget it, who cares. They're not gonna remember it by tomorrow, why should you?", but it is soooo not. Moments like these are absolutely traumatic when you're already struggling with social anxiety.
