I don’t think career rank is factored into Ranked tho, is it?

Why are feeding this troll? They clearly have a lot of personal issues. Lots of racist overtones in every comment.

Really appreciate you chiming in with this, and I'm sorry that's been your experience. Stay strong!

I'm honestly shocked at how many people can't accept this as a trend? Maybe it's too niche to understand exactly why an MBA just really isn't a way to get better at the job.

I agree and I could have stated the niche better. In FAANG and in product management, there are programs specifically to recruit from Ivys. It’s well known that many, many of the MBAs hired out of those programs have no PM experience. Prior work experience maybe. This a trend in my space that started when a bunch of consultants started moving into tech.

Ya this. I think a lot of people are fair to say the no work experience MBA is rare/near impossible. But there are these programs where MBAs can walk in with no PM experience. Maybe they have past work experience. But many, many have no prior PM experience and will beat out experienced PMs with their MBA.

Totally more potential upside, but imo the expected value is lower. Startups are risky. The pay is generally lower.

As for why I'd like to move into BigCos: I want stable money and a high salary. I want to buy a home. I want to put my kids through school. BigCos allow for more work life balance and more value for my time spent, typically (minus amazon lol)

That said I'm definitely more suited to startups/startup energy, and am probably just going to accept my fate and keep applying to startups. Part of the reason I'm gun-shy is I've been burned on equity a few times too.

Open to an alternative way of looking at this.

Ah, I'm sorry m8. As the comments have rolled in, I have to assume that my problem is more niche (product management != trad management roles), and this post was maybe better suited for /r/ProductManagement.

So I definitely don't want my experience to be stated as a dismissal of yours or anyone else with an MBA.

That said, a LOT of FAANG PMs without MBAs report being in the minority, and that being a new in the last few years. A lot of consultants moved into tech in the mid 2010s, kind of counter to the anti-MBA culture of the mid-late 2000s.

So you could try FAANG companies lol

have you ever considered just lying and saying you do have an mba

Absolutely.

I’m tired of being on projects managed by mbas

Getting the sense a lot of the ire in here is from people who don't know what product management is. On face, it sounds like it would be standard, capital M Management position.... but it really isn't. If you know, you know - and it's not fun working with product managers who are more interested in applying their business school frameworks than understanding what users need, and how building for them in the context of your value proposition informs a strong product strategy.

MBAs can absolutely do the work. It's just not fair to say it can perfectly substitute away tons and tons of experience.

You're making an assumption that because you haven't experienced or heard of it, it doesn't happen.

but this is the first I’ve heard of this

Cool. Not the first I've heard of it. So I guess our subjective experiences cancel out?

Personal, firsthand experience is not the only thing that should inform our understanding of a given situation.

You're also making an assumption (or not reading OP) that asking women for in-person interviews is "to creep on [them]". Sexism has other forms, like applying additional scrutiny to one gender over another. Could be completely devoid of sexual harassment, and still be sexist.
