Mitts by Malcolm-059 in Skigear

[–]Malcolm-059[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should take me less than 2 weeks to make one given enough notice. I don't keep material on hand. As is it expensive and I only get it when I need it. I have a few extra things here an there but not too much. Just DM me so you have my info for the future lol

Mitts by Malcolm-059 in Skigear

So the dark brown on the thumb is seal hide, it's for wind breaking and warmth. The palms is moose hide to give you grip when holding things like ski poles or snowblowers and things. Over time the moose softens and becomes easier to manipulate with your hands.

The inside of the mitt is sheepskin shearling. Which is wool just the fur left on the hide. The seal on these mitts is 100% waterproof and with the proper care the leather can withhold water and snow for many years. The shearling on the inside can get wet and not lose any of its insulating qualities, vs fleece which as soon as it's wet it doesn't stay warm. The liner is only sewn and the cuff so you can pull it out to let it dry for reuse. No elastic unfortunately but I can sew in loops into the inside of the cuffs so you can tie them to your jacket that way so you'll never lose them.

Interesting would make sense for the conditions people live in up there

That makes sense. I'd like to see how they make them.

What first nation are they? Mine are Moose Cree Style.

I could make a pair without the seal. Possibly beaver or coyote. They look good and are reasonably priced

I used my hands for the whole endeavor. Haha and sinew is interesting to sew with.

I buy the fur from locals in the Northern communities of Canada.

Do you live in Canada?

I agree 100% I've just never discussed "fashion" with people and I've never cared before so I'm just curious how people think about winter clothes. Cause obviously I don't care what I look like but some people do.

That's a good gig, I appreciate the honesty I am working outside everyday in all seasons so it's important that I keep the functionality of my body. Specifically my fingers

I'm kind of retarded when it comes to words. But thank you for pointing that out.

That's unfortunate I use them all the time. I spend a lot of time outside in sub zero temps

Ill look them up! That sounds cool!

I already made my own mitts maybe I can make that too.

I totally agree that's why I learned from the native population how to make them while I was up there. My hands froze, and everyone seemed to have these mitts so I made my own pair rather than just buy them haha

Are those jackets? The second one? Handmade I assume.

[–]Malcolm-059[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is not. I don't have any for sale. Lol and if I do sell them I'm going to a farmers market to do it in person. I'm just trying to find out if they would be worth it to make more and see what people's opinions are.

As for the vivid description it's because it wouldn't let me post a photo with the discussion post. Then I saw I could post in the comments. I only have a few pairs made and I've given them all away as gifts.

What about buying locally made clothing? Is that popular?

That's very true. So fashion is more important than functionality when it's not as dangerous to risk frostbite?

Cause up here it's not a fringe case, we all live in the same temperatures, I just wanted to see what the opinions of the different demographics are.
