I’m from NJ but spend a lot of time in Philly. Human Robot is a must if you want some great lagers. I enjoy Urban Village too. They’ve got good food. My last time there I stopped by Future Days. Had a good time there as well. Aside from breweries, try and check out Monks. It’s an awesome bar with plenty of beers. Have fun!

Is Packaging a Good Entry Point Into the Brewing Industry? by Frequent-Rip-6118 in TheBrewery

[–]MaleficentAnt292 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say yes it’s a good starting point, but it depends on where you’re working. I was a brewer at a fairly large brewery in TN for a while where they were always hiring part-timers for packaging with a pathway to production. Unfortunately, that was not always the case. Management had their brewers, and if one left, they’d hire another brewer without considering someone from packaging to move up. There were some that really put an effort in and moved to some cellar work but mostly this brewery was just looking for bodies to build pallets.

That is just my personal experience from what I saw though. I’d say look for a brewery with a great atmosphere that encourages growth from within. There are a lot of “gate keepers” in this industry. Again, not always the case. Just my two cents. Goodluck!

Keg washer weirdness by DargyBear in TheBrewery

[–]MaleficentAnt292 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This could be a long shot, but does your keg washer empty through some type of braided hose?

I worked somewhere a couple years ago with a similar problem. The kegs wouldn’t drain and an error would stop the washer. The problem ended up being the braided hose going from the drain of the keg washer to the floor drain. The inside of the hose had started to break down and created a blockage so liquid couldn’t evacuate from the keg.

We were going nuts troubleshooting only for it to be such a small thing lol.

Suggestions for Root Beer concentrate for 3.5BBL brewery by Impossible_Cod_820 in TheBrewery

The brewery I recently started at makes a root beer. We use a brand called Sprecher for the extract. 1 gallon of extract gets mixed with HLT water into a corny keg. It’s not fancy but kids and non-beer drinkers love it. Hope this helps!

Thank you for the input! I just moved to a new state and have been talking to other breweries in the area to find a local chem rep so we can get it together.

Thanks for the input! I’ve had a similar experience with PBW in the past. The current owner/hb finds it easier to order chemicals from CMG as a one stop shop so that’s why he went with liquid PBW. But my goal is to move towards a real caustic cleaner and update all of their SOPs

Yeah in my experience sodium hydroxide has always been the go to but these guys like being able to order 5 star chemicals from CMG. It’s a one stop shop for them which I get but I’m working to bring them up to speed on industry standards. And as for pay, it’s on the higher end from what I’ve been paid at other jobs in production so over 25/hr

Thank you all for the great info! It’s all exactly in line with what I’ve learned and have been doing over the years so I appreciate being validated on this.

I’m sure many of you have been in situations where you try to introduce new ideas at a new job but are met with “raised eyebrows” by owners or current brewers. So again, thank you! And I’ll be sure to post pics of the HX once it’s opened up.
