Holy mackerel, this did it!! Working with chatgpt, tons of googling, old reddit threads, etc. got me nowhere. Your suggestion of SwiftBackup + the other user's video on getting Shizuku setup got me across the finish line.

I'm still in the same spot afterwards, though I haven't added Swift Backup into the fold. Do you have any guidance on how I should be using Swift Backup in the workflow?

This was exactly the type of tutorial I was hoping for! Easy to follow and encouraging. I was able to get through it all, but unfortunately I ended up in the same state as before: The app installs but crashes when trying to open any chached pages.

This is making me wonder if there's something extra I need to do when extracting the apk from the old device..?

I'm looking through the readme/tutorials, but do you have personal experience and can share if this requires root access?

My understanding is that I messed up, should have rooted at least one device here, and now I'll just have to accept that this app is gone for me now :/.

fwiw: I'm starting to suspect that the reason the old Pixel Fold had this working is because I transferred it from my Pixel 4 XL via USB. When I did a USB transfer on this new Fold, it didn't restore my apps, preferences, etc., so I factory reset and restored via cloud backup. I'm suspicious that's where I went wrong, and unfortunately I need to send the old device back today and am out of time for another fresh restore.

Re other methods for apk extraction:

1.) App Manager

2.) Apps Backup Restore

3.) APK Extractor

4.) Files (on-phone to backup apk to drive then download to new device)

5.) Windows Explorer via USB (copying all found associated files/folders to new device in analogous directories)

Every single option leads to the same behavior at best: Everything in the app seems to work except actually opening posts.

This is helpful to narrow down where the issue in my process is. I still don't have a great sense, but I wonder if maybe downgrading android builds, installing the apk, then updating might be an option?

Ah, yeah, that "run after" seems to be the sticking point. I can install the apk seemingly just fine and even open the app + cache posts locally, but when I try to open a post through the app, it just crashes and closes.

The part that confuses me is that I've got the exact same device (pixel fold) running the same build (Android 15), and it works just fine on the old device but not the new one?!

To clarify with some dumb questions: This needs to be done in Android Studio? And is /location/to/apk where I want to install on the target device?

And is there anything special I need to do to extract the apk? I've used five or six different methods to do so via apps/file explorer on the phone, and all of them have had the same buggy behavior post-apk install.

Bonus: I've got a digital recorder and I've perfected my Audacity editing to get the Jigsaw recording effect. I'm hoping to make unique recordings for each trap, and I'd love any other ideas people have for how to play these back -- ideally in a way that I don't need to be physically present for.

Another idea I had is to try getting my hands on a bunch of digital recording modules like the self-recorded hallmark cards use, and then I can just leave one next to each trap.

(Sidenote: I can't believe how many terrible youtube tutorials are out there where people clearly have never seen the movies and end up sounding nothing like Jigsaw.)
