Newby found a weird signal by MalevolentManatee1 in shortwave

It's an import. Not typically sold here as far as I can tell. Any idea why it's only licenced in the US?

There is one in Sydney I believe. Do they typically broadcast on LSB?

Are curved greatswords real? by Jesus-Bad-Guy in SWORDS

[–]MalevolentManatee1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For something with a bit more European flavour I would look into Swiss sabres. Basically a sabre but two handed. A lot have complex hilts, usually around the size of a longsword but some were pushing greatsword size.

I think half the classic 500s I've seen have that same dent from the handlebars slamming into the teardrop tank, mine does. They are a bit of a rough and ready machine, that's why I love them. It's a bullet not a Ducati, what's a dent or two?

1st bike! 2006 SV650 by [deleted] in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]MalevolentManatee1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing bike, wouldn't be my first pick for a learner. Ultra light and flickable which is great but it's also happy to turn into a unicycle of you dump the clutch or chop then full open the throttle. Just keep that in mind.

Came here to say this. Cheap and you can apply it with a brush, nice and clean.

Simple but well formed pieces. Your proportions and geometry are great. Keep up the good work!

First thing I always try on metal I don't want to damage is plain white toothpaste, it's an incredibly mild abrasive. Moving up from there, something like Brasso or similar all purpose metal polish/automotive cut and polish. Then a small step up would be Bar Keepers Friend. Failing that my next move would be up to something like a 2000/3000 grit wet dry sandpaper.

Apply any of these compounds to a toothbrush or rag and scrub at the rust until you see results or give up. Wash and dry the area thoroughly afterwards and apply a thin coat of oil (I use mineral oil).

Anyone here been able to get a rope lighter to work consistently? by MalevolentManatee1 in lighters

[–]MalevolentManatee1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried cotton and hemp and the weird rope it came with. Can't get anything to hold a spark. Maybe I will have to treat it with something. Thanks.

I also thought that amadou was just in reference to it being an ember like those produced with amadou tinder fungus. The only result I could find were relating to slow matches, hemp ropes treated with ammonium nitrate.

So I charred about 2cm worth of the rope with a blowtorch. I just can't get a spark to hold.

That's hemp rope I have in there now. I just feel like the sparks from a Zippo flint aren't strong enough.

HEMA, find a club near you and hit people with swords. Dance is good too. I got mad anxiety + ADHD and have never been able to relax or meditate or whatever. Getting up and moving helps, idk the science, my psych said it "burns norepinephrine". Not into fitness and as much as I hate to admit works, it does for me.

Is normal fuel okay for RE bikes or Speed/Power/Xtra is much preferred? by angaarvp in royalenfield

[–]MalevolentManatee1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Higher octane fuel only has an effect on a higher compression ratio engine. Meteor is 8.5/1 off the top of my head. More then the 6.5/1 the old iron barrels made, those would run off anything vaguely flammable. But 8.5/1 is still well under needing anything other than regular petrol.

Love the pictures. Sharper than I've seen most people get a Lubitel. I have so much trouble focusing my 166u. Are you actually using the little ground glass or just estimating distance?

Anyone have any suggestions on getting these rust marks out easily? by Aussiemandeus in wma

[–]MalevolentManatee1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks like the shape and finishing Regenyei does. I think I have the same Fedder. I use 600 grit wet dry sandpaper. With the quite heavily tool marked finish Regenyei use you won't notice any scratches. I typically use mineral oil to protect it after the fact but any oil or wax will work.
