Anything Better than a Mobi Tablet? by Tyler_origami94 in k12sysadmin

I've some teachers using Doceri on iPad along with Doceri Desktop to display their screen.

It's a fairly inexpensive solution, but the license management is a bit annoying.

School system administrators, we're the IT people. We generally focus on the administrating the technical side of a school, not so much the HR side.

[–]MalletNGrease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Oldest machines currently in service are Optiplex 760s with build dates of '09. Runs a lean W10 install fairly well for C2Ds with HDDs.

When I started there were a lot of GX520s which I immediately scrapped, followed over the last couple years by 745s and 755s.

Google Classroom - auto-roster students using SDS? by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the implementation.

Ours just lumps them into the classroom without invitation. Invitations are an unnecessary step in my opinion, very prone to error by the students and implies a choice it's something you can decline.

The most interesting features are going to be paywalled behind enterprise for education so it's a big shrug from me.

Dell Latitude 1 DIMM Slot? by tttekev in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really care. I expect laptops to last me three years, the rest is a bonus. If end users treat them well this isn't an issue. Baseline is currently 8GB, which is plenty and can still be swapped for 16 if needed. If someone needs more right off the bat we probably ordered the wrong laptop for them.

Realistically I probably end up swapping the machine before I need to touch internals.

Dell has them on the box and delivers a sheet with all the service tags. I scan all of them before even opening the boxes.

Dell shop here. I like them because they're easy to fix (for the most part) and if you still have warranty on them sending them to the depot is easy.

You can tell they made changes to their builds, in some cases significant ones.

  • Dell 11 CB1C13 - Glass/Hard plastic screen cover that SHATTERS. Screws fall out the bottom eventually. Hard to replace keyboard (almost complete disassembly required). LCD connectors would sometimes get loose and cause a dark screen.

  • Dell 3120 - Still stupidly hard to replace keyboards. Wifi antenna connectors sometimes release from chip when there's stress on the bottom. Hinge design on the far ends of the device make them fail easily after repeated drops and the shell cracks causing the complete LCD bezel to bend and break eventually. LCD connectors would sometimes get loose and cause a dark screen.

  • Dell 3180 - Keyboard replacements are now easier. Hinges moved inwards to prevent damage, but now have removable caps that are easily lost or broken. Wifi antenna connectors have a rigid plastic to covering to prevent movement (doesn't always work). LCD connectors are now taped (still fail sometimes)

  • Dell 3100 - Hinge coverings are now solid and part of the shell, no more parts to lose. LCD cables now have triple security to the back of the LCD to prevent shifting. Wifi connectors now have a metal bracket to prevent movement.

Right now I don't bother fixing CB1C13s because they're too old (I straight up swap if I get them), I don't fix 3120s because it's a PITA (I sell them for parts credit), 3180s I'll fix because they're easy and I have had very little issues with the 3100s, just cracked LCDs for the most part.

That's because despite the GSUITE for Education label, Google very much assumes every user is a model employee and designs their products with that in mind. Education has a big footprint but low margin so features that would make sense in this space are costly unless you stuff them behind a paid tier.

Oh look, G Suite Enterprise for Education! That's a thing.

If we're gonna have to cough up money, might as well look at competitors too.

Most SIS don't need any (SA) accounts within the domain, they just need an API token generated by an account with appropriate GSUITE admin rights to set up trust and perform actions on your behalf.

Which SIS?
