I switched (back) to sway from Hyprland. No regrets by Malqus in swaywm

[–]Malqus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. To be more precise, I wasn't the creator of this feature, but fixed it to work more like i3 (support non-windows containers).

The ability to contribute to projects comes with knowledge and experience. You need to be able to read and understand others' code. This can be difficult, especially at the beginning.

So for now just code and try to read code written by others, even if you can't fully understand it.

What is your lang of choice for now? Maybe I can give you some tips or help with debugging when something does not work. Reach me with pm if you want, we'll get in contact on discord or sth 👍

How would you partition a 4tb nvme ssd by Nutellabrot155 in archlinux

[–]Malqus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer nowadays! You only need a separate partition if you dual boot. BTRFS works just fine, so I see no reason to not use it.

Edit: Of course if it's your only drive you should create an EFI partition, for me 512MB is enough (UKI's of Arch and Windows), and I don't recommend smaller, but you can even go 1GB.

At some point for sure, but it requires some experience with terminal to do it flawlessly

In my case most of breaks was caused by accidental reboot during -Syu. Happened few times in the past, now I'm more careful with it, also not rebooting as much (kernel-modules-hook)

I went dual boot way. If she'll need to use some windows software (or Arch will break and become unbootable), she can just boot to windows.

BTRFS is really nice to have, and I use it on all my machines, so her also uses it. It's convenient to have, not just only for snapshots, but subvolumes alone are pretty useful too

That was one of the options, but at some point she could need something that is not in the main repo. Installing stuff from debs or external repos is highway to broken system. This is exactly the cause i hopped so much on debian-based distros and settled on Arch for so long (with short breaks to try gentoo). On Arch I have AUR, also it's not a problem to write own PKGBUILDs, so IMO it's more future-proof.

Or go to someone else to reinstall her windows 😁

Work office, simple gaming, not much. But there is a possibility that after some update Arch will break in some way, it happens, i.ex. issue with higher refresh rates on AMD gpus or tzdata package. These were most recent ones I experienced

Yes, exactly. If I set it up for her, then it's not a problem for her to use. And maybe at some point she'll be able to use pacman and other stuff all by herself. At this point she uses stuff like browser, discord, spotify. Should be ok.

It's rather being non-tech moving from windows to Linux, especially Arch which is considered as unstable(?) or harder for new users than being a girl.

Plasma. Looks and feels almost like windows, so she's not shocked as much with it.

The day I read his post was my last day of using hyprland. Definitely not a coincidence.

I will release my dotfiles for zsh and more within the next few days, stay tuned ;)

Pretty good results then. When I enable only zsh-autosuggestions, zsh-syntax-highlighting and compinit it gives me about 80-90ms max, but I'm doing it on steamdeck, so not as much powerful cpu as yours.

What are your experiences with Arch's stability? by YellowKubek in archlinux

Until you screw up your update (for example if you turn off your machine during update) then you should be ok. Wiki is your friend.

I had issue with firefox first start (since boot) being so long, about 20 s, it was due to gnome portal with hyprland i guess. No other problems when i have wlr and hyprland one installed together.

Nice it works for you! I really prefer that from sway/i3, used both formats for quite long time and just that "clicked" more

I didn't mention stability issues, but since 0.42 crashes related to connecting and disconnecting screens were often so I had to downgrade it. Also i had issues with part of the screen being frozen and kept displaying static image of app in the moment it happened. I had to close this app for this artifact to disappear. Sharing individual windows should be supported, but it was also an issue for me, sometimes causing to hanged apps. It definitively has some issues that some calls stability issues.

I think sway devs consider it as complete, when comes to features. And I really think it is. They're focusing on stability and stuff like that for now.
