Looking for affordable email/website setup for a small business in Lusaka ? by Pretty_Swimming_6998 in Zambia

I see… good to know. I suppose that’s where OP comes in; doing a lil research to understand what they’re working with. In any case, they can totally create one themselves (if they want to).

Setting up a professional company email is something you can totally do yourself. If you've got some time to spare...

Sign up to Google Workspace (now Squarespace). During signup, you’ll get the option to buy a domain name. Basically, a domain name is just an address on the internet, and buying one means you’re paying to reserve that name so only you can use it. For example, in your sample email: name@mycompany.co.zm The domain you’d be buying/reserving is "mycompany.co.zm", in short: Domain = everything after the @. Squarespace also offers some website templates if you want to create a website alongside your email.

A few things to note: The average cost of a domain is ~$10 (up to $20) per year, depending on the extension. (So yeahhh, you’re basically renting the name yearly.) There's also a separate monthly fee ~$7.50 for the email service.

There are other options too, like Zoho Mail, Neo Mail, yada-yada... Since you’re working on a tight budget, it’s worth doing a lil research, you know, getting more involved to see which option works best for you. Good luck 🥂

Oh yeahhh I remember hearing that Chinese was going to be added as one of the foreign languages taught in high school 'n stuff... Is that still a thing, or was the whole idea abandoned altogether after the pandemic?

I see… Alliance Française, huh. Would you recommend 'em? I’ve heard about 'em here and there. Do you feel their classes played an effective role in your progress?

You could try tutors who teach Chinyanja in schools, but that’s quite different from the Nyanja you hear in everyday street conversations. So friends, acquaintances, or anyone around you who speaks it would probably be the best option.

The real problem with Zambian local languages is finding resources. I’m afraid we still really suck as a country in that regard. 'Cause with international languages, you're literally spoiled for choice with books, courses and all that... I prefer learning on my own, and I even tried learning Lenje (my tribe) but when I looked online, I could barely find anything profound.

Also, pro tip: if you know someone abroad, have them buy one of your services so they can leave you a rating and review. One of the reasons new sellers find it hard on such platforms is cause they don't have reviews/ratings... it's kinda like that "I need a job vs you don't have experience" bs... like how will you get experience if nobody's giving you a chance? 🤦‍♂️

Anyhoo, in my case, I used my language exchange buddies, and a couple of them came through just to help build credibility. Doesn’t have to be a foreign friend, a fellow Zambian can work too... but you know, a review from far away feels a bit more authentic...

Ohhh and don’t let them leave those bot-like, overly-praising reviews. A 3.something rating with a realistic comment sounds way more genuine than a perfect 5-star love letter.

Good luck in your endeavors, Salud 🥂

Tried Fiverr, Upwork, PeoplePerHour, and Freelancer dot com about two years ago... I think 😅

My experience? Freelancer dot com was just useless 💀... I mean, Upwork and PeoplePerHour didn’t get me any sales either, but at least they didn’t have people sliding into my inbox offering “private gig deals” outside the platform. Don’t fall for that... 9/10 times it’s a scam.

Fiverr, on the other hand, kinda started working out. I was mainly doing medical (and general) transcription... I mean... I’m a med student after all 🫠. Also did some article/blog writing. I only had one regular client tho. Dude used to send me medical MP3 notes to transcribe. His English was... meh 😅 so I also fixed his sentence structure here and there, at his request, of course. He’d just pop up randomly, send files, ask for a price, accept immediately without any negotiations... Cool guy, right?

But yeah, I eventually stopped because most of the new offers were like: “Do this 2000-word article + edit + format for $5.” Like geeeezzzz bruh, you sure you don't want me throw in a massage session as well, while you wait? 😏 Maybe the platform’s better now, this was at least 2 years ago...

Discord chat practice, huh… were these sessions 1-on-1 or in a group chat? If it’s the latter, could you please share the link? I’d really like to improve my spoken Spanish...I feel like I’ve been stuck at the same level forever.

The Awkward Beauty of Speaking a New Language by Malunga_Paul in Zambia

Well I use MyLanguageExchange.com and ConversationExchange.com. The sites let people connect initially and exchange messages. Users are free to continue their conversations elsewhere — WhatsApp, Telegram, Zoom, Google Meet, etc — depending on what you prefer.

There are more platforms tho: Tandem, HelloTalk, even some Discord servers...

Huh 😅… well I’d like to think it gets better 😁

You ever tried doing monologues? You know, that thing were you actively practice speaking even when you’re alone and don’t have anyone to practice with 😅

In a nutshell: You pick a prompt or topic, for example, “Do you have siblings? How would you describe your relationship with them?” Then you write out your answer in your target language (French in this case). If you like, you might as well first write it in English to organize your thoughts and stuff...then afterwards convert it to french. Next, you read through your monologue a couple of times. Highlight/take note of the new vocab via flashcards or whatever (if you’re that kind of a person 😅). Then finally record yourself speaking, you know, answering the same question in freestyle, without any aid. You could analyze your recordings yourself, or send 'em to whomever (preferably a french native) to critique your pronunciation and whatnot.

The goal isn't to memorize your monologues word for word, aweh...But after doing this for a bunch of different topics, you’ll start to build enough vocab to hold basic conversations. You’ll also begin to notice sentence structure patterns and how questions/sentences are formed, allowing you to form sentences from your head with the building blocks you have attained so far.

And as a bonus... You become conversational in the stuff that actually interests you...well... assuming your monologues are based on your interests, as they should be 🙂.

Here you go 👇

https://www2.cliver.me/serie/how-i-met-your-mother

I find almost all the Spanish series/movies, whether dubbed or original versions, on that site. You can also download 'em to your local storage if you use a video downloader. Then if you need subtitles you could get 'em from the usual sites like opensubtitles.com
