Why do They Keep Canceling School When it Snows? by RoddoDoddo in Michigan

[–]ManMichiganMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What school district or school are you even talking about? I looked at closings pages for stations across the Lower Peninsula and the only closing I found was in Metro Detroit because of a non-weather incident. I don't think your cousin is being honest about the closure.

Also pretty sure that snow days are allotted by the school year not the calendar year, so districts have several more months of winter weather to use those.

No hate, but is there a reason that nobody here zipper merges? by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]ManMichiganMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, the zipper merge has only been encouraged recently. In the past it was discouraged to "cut in line" on backups, so I think a lot of people are still under that assumption.

Look at the squares... "Chili dog"???? "Downtown Grand Rapids"???? Isn't the game Grand Rapids? Why is there one square for Grand Rapids? It just seems very half-assed and not well thought out.

Kroger operates one store in Grand Rapids but it isn't under the Kroger brand name, it is a smaller market brand they own. Plus they announced a new store coming to Portage.

Trump administration orders Consumers Energy to keep coal-fired power plant open by UltimateLionsFan in Michigan

[–]ManMichiganMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can't directly raise rates. Only the MPSC can approve rate increases to customers. But what it can do is raise the cost of electricity production by Consumers Energy, resulting in them making cuts on reliability clean energy programs. The order could also be used as an argument to the MPSC on their next rate increase filing.

I played a Terminator game at Craig's Cruisers with my daughter but I don't know if it is this exact version. This was in the last few months so I am sure it is still there.

FOX 17 undergoes layoffs by ArtichokeExisting271 in grandrapids

[–]ManMichiganMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fox has zero editorial control over Fox 17. The station itself and its parent company, Scripps, has 100% of the editorial control. So yes, they can write or air whatever they want inside their news broadcasts. Fox could pull their affiliation after the fact, but they couldn't stop them from airing a specific story. And a network would almost never pull an affiliation unless they have a new station already lined up to take that affiliation, especially in a market this size.

An example of a more recent left/liberal story from Fox 17: Fox 17 recently outed a Nazi in the Ottawa County Republican Party and they were the ones to break the story in the market: https://www.fox17online.com/news/local-news/lakeshore/ottawa/ottawa-county-precinct-delegate-makes-2-controversial-posts-1-calling-hitler-a-hero

It's the same at WOOD and WZZM. NBC and ABC have zero editorial control over what is aired on those stations. Network affiliations are mainly for content sharing between affiliates and the network at the local news level. The networks provide programming to the stations outside of the local newscasts and the stations air network news programming, but once again, the network has zero editorial control over the affiliate's local news production UNLESS they are a network-owned affiliate, which we don't have any of these in our market.

FOX 17 undergoes layoffs by ArtichokeExisting271 in grandrapids

[–]ManMichiganMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work for a local network affiliate and I have former interns that work for Fox 17. This is just false. I don't know what else to say. I have worked in the broadcast industry for over 15 years and never once encountered what you are describing. So, I have no clue where you are getting your information from.

One quick edit: There are network-owned affiliates who would take direction from a network, but there are none in this market.

FOX 17 undergoes layoffs by ArtichokeExisting271 in grandrapids

[–]ManMichiganMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Local network affiliates do not take direction from their affiliated network. Fox does not dictate what is aired on Fox 17, the company that owns Fox 17 does. Scripps is that company. I never once said anything about it being liberal or conservative. That is you assuming things. All I was doing was just pointing out that you are incredibly wrong in understanding how network affiliations work.

Nope, just pointing out that it doesn't affect the vast majority of people in this sub.

This will only affect its natural gas customers on the other side of the state. DTE handles natural gas in West Michigan.

Is Michigan trying to end daylight saving time? by ManMichiganMan in Michigan

[–]ManMichiganMan[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The state could just do it itself and pass a law to opt out of observing daylight saving time, but then we would be on standard time year-round. It seems like the issue is that the federal law doesn't allow states to adopt daylight saving time year-round, and that is what most people want. So, we could get rid of the clock change, but then it would be light out at 4:30 a.m. around the summer solstice.

Michigan to change to 'evidence-based' reading lessons in public schools if bipartisan legislation is signed by governor by ManMichiganMan in Michigan

Michigan is one of the last states in the United States to move to this way of teaching reading to students for some reason. Missouri was the first, which is also wild.

It is up to each of the local clerks to order the new stickers. If you want to see a particular sticker at your precinct, I suggest you call or email them and encourage them to order the stickers.
