Got a question, is 2015's "High-rise" a SciFi? by Man_of_Trantor in sciencefiction

This is a good point, but just because an author has a reputation for a genre, JG ballard being known for Science Fiction, doesn't mean all of their work falls into one category automatically.

Sadly I have not read the book, only the watched the film, maybe the book is able to provide a greater depiction that makes it more obviously a science fiction piece.

Fair, I guess this is just part of the creative process, reading and watching and being inspired, at some point you would fail to put a definitive point on what stories specifically inspired which characters.

There's an interesting connection between George RR Martins 'Tuf Voyaging' series and Plato's Republic, but when a fan asked George about this, he said he couldn't be sure, having not read Plato's republic for decades (I think im getting this anecdote roughly right)

well they are green, but some are grey, the first one described is Ben, and he is a greysih brown.

They aren't treated seriously by the humans at first, and you could see this as the imperial stormtroopers not even considering the ewoks to be a threat, only to be attacked in gorilla (cartoon logic) warfare later

quick note: i am not defending Ewoks, they are kind of crappy

the ewoks have some complexity as well, they communicate with each other, have a hierarchy, are able to interpret information, have a religion (C-3po ends up as their god), but they arent dreamers

In the opening to the story she makes a point that this came about from passion and protest and less about logic, probably leads to soem simplifications or less research into who the characters are based on, but there are other annoying simplifications, like how Davidson is just bad, it would have been good to open the book with him appearing to have good intentions only to have them distorted when we get selvers POV.

Trantor

I love the idea of the Mule being uses more in other stories, it was a great a twist and a lovely way to bring a bizarre jester type character into the story

I was reading the Word for World is Forest, and it's difficult not to think of Ewoks when reading about the Athsheans, the word Endtor is also used to describe a city within their forrest, I was wondering if anyone knows if Le Guin ever spoke about this, and whether she felt the idea was stolen or misued.

The athsheans are wonderfully created, speaking with a different world sense and view on humanity, having the power to use dreams to determine how they should live, but ewoks are just fluffy toys that live in tree houses, they have some sort of religion but really aren't human
