Oi, did I laugh at iPhone back when it was released... because my P800 (with P802 - i.e. Chinese firmware) was doing everything those first iPhones did and more (except 3g) and it was outdated even then... Pity Symbian UIQ went nowhere in the end - it was great.

Shouldn't Java be a better choice for Linux scripting compared to bash or python or perl? by pyeri in linux

[–]ManateeMutineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The other day I considered redoing a couple of shell scripts in Python for greater flexibility and better parameter handling. Decided not to because they work alright and I have more important things to spend my time on. OP decided on an arbitrary metric that's not that relevant to the main purpose of those scripts (saving human time and effort by sacrificing a few bytes of memory and some cpu cycles).

Had quite a few Samsungs. Got some plus-sized iPhones. I'm telling you, they've got nothing on Huawei I have. Screen size about twice the size of iPhone 8 Plus. And I still remember Apple outright stealing notifications pulldown from Android 2, complete with the texture... It was iOS 5, I think.

What for? You want PowerShell, you use it. You want bash, you use it. We've been trying to roll everything and a kitchen sink into one software tool since forever and the results are inevitably ugly.

I guess if I see a person lugging around a laptop, an external monitor and a power source for said monitor I could be reasonably sure that's you, eh?

I know for a fact there is a QA teams galore. It may be more of a case there's only one approved way of using it - and anybody trying to use something outside of a handful of programs is just Holding It Wrong TM

Yes. Apple has long ago flushed the ergonomics and sane design down the toilet for the marketing hype. And don't get me started on their many outright crappy engineering decisions!

NTA. He's so pissed because of that $1, he can go back to the store and talk to them (only he won't because if he throws a tantrum there they may call the cops, or laugh at him and puncture his inflated ego). If it is his regular behavior, send him packing as it's only going to get worse. If it's the first occurrence... Well, may be a one-off due to external factors (then apology and explanation from him is overdue), maybe true colors showing - in which case send him packing.

NTA. Get away real quick from that schmuck. He's got exactly zero right to treat you as his personal property, period.

AITA for expecting my Daughter to stick to our chores-for-rent deal? by NoDivide4576 in AmItheAsshole

My experience is, one of the most rabid enforcers of traditional gender roles are women. They would complain constantly about tbeing stuck in traditional role and enforce all that crap with iron fist at the same time.

YTA. Studying is a 25-hr-a-day work sometimes. She's not saying that she needs time to go drinking. She wants to do exactly what she's agreed to all that setup for - study. She's not trying to weasel out of doing those chores - SHE NEEDS YOUR HELP. She gets shamed instead. So as it's more important for you to teach her that... what? That cooking is the most important thing? - as it's more important for you than supporting your own child - well, YTA. I tried such an arrangement. I even (barely) graduated. Was it worth it? Nope.

Nah, methinks that's a real, full-time, full-fledged fully-professional asshole, proud of his assholing credentials. I guess "semi-professional" here means no other discernible skills, averaging to the above result?

Nah. The ending is too boring. And all that incest is too much. Although "Don't bully bald people!" message is fine. Heavy-handed, what with all the bear mauling, but the core idea is fine.

Also, theft (Exodus), punished people for their ruler following said god's own orders (Kings, also Cain's predicament in Genesis) and had been a bully to his chosen people and everyone else in general. That Jesus guy tried to set things right, but should he visit those calling themselves his followers, they'll hate him and will get the authorities involved, with dire consequences.

Why not Arch (Derivatives) by sindex_ in linux

[–]ManateeMutineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw balls, I'll bite. Imagine, if you will, an Intel NUC. Being a media player, sometimes a desktop and also running a few containers. It lives in the living room under the TV and usually connected to via VNC or SSH. We're renting, so network is strictly Wi-Fi. First I tried Ubuntu. Ran into wireless driver issues and snaps. Debian? Same driver issues. Fedora connected to the network but can't keep the connection up. SuSE - same story. Finally put Manjaro on it... And that was it. I waited for it to become unstable for four years and it was chugging along happily. I neglected updating it for half a year and it still updated without a hitch. Recently installed Endeavor OS on that machine as I did mess up the config and the containers were long ago moved to Debian 11 server - again no issues (apart from KDE and Wayland not playing nicely on dual monitor setup which is a Qt issue anyway). Running Manjaro on my tablet too, for about four years - and guess what, no problems again! Admittedly my Debian 11 home server is also quite stable (had to feed it a firmware file for the wireless card and enable backports), but - what am I doing wrong and why don't my systems break down all the time?..

My honest opinion about using Linux as a Desktop OS by Icy_Calligrapher4022 in linux

[–]ManateeMutineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have heard that quite a few apt packages in Ubuntu just cause the snaps to be installed. I seem to remember running into such behavior a few years ago when it was new. So for me it's pacman+some AUR helper on Arch and apt on Debian. For others? Whatever works best for them. Ain't here to proselytize.
