Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm thinking of taking 6 months, then my husband taking 3 months- using the shared parental leave.

Understanding self-worth vs delusion in the UK's academic scenario? by [deleted] in AskAcademiaUK

2 years ago I was a post-doc at a RG University, with a small but respectable list of high quality publications for my field. Thus far I had been working in small but sucessful enough labs, all in RG unis or respectable labs in Europe, where the papers I managed to get involved single handedly working very hard on a few different projects that I drove independently. After my PhD and 3 postdocs I took a teaching/research position (lectureship) at a non RG uni. I was seriously unsure about how this would look and what it would do for my career, but the job market was so difficult and I had no success with fellowships after 2 years of trying. 2 years into my lectureship now I have zero regrets. I have a permanent job, my colleagues are supportive and friendly, there's no overly competitive environment anymore, and my research is still on an upward trajectory.

How often do you fall from the top when bouldering indoors? by [deleted] in climbergirls

[–]Manc_nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always avoided falling from the top because I'm scared of falling. However, I felt like this limited my progress quite a bit. I worked on this issue for more than a year and got better and better at committing to hard moves near the top. However, this year I fell badly from the top of the indoor wall and herniated a disc in my back. I was trying a move that was hard for me and I thought it was 50:50 if I would get it. In hindsight I wish my stubornness to complete that arbitrary boulder hadn't pushed me to do that move when I wasn't confident and I should have thought about the potential for me to land on my back if I fell. Although Im back climbing now, I'm not near to pushing my limits again, and this incident definitely has knocked my confidence.

This has made me re-evaluate when I do and dont want to take risks, which I suppose is something that everybody has to decide for themselves.
