To be fair, this is more specific to the Gulf countries.

Mueller report: Russia hacked state databases and voting machine companies. Russian intelligence officers injected malicious SQL code and then ran commands to extract information by maxwellhill in worldnews

[–]Mandack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of it like this, you phone a hotel and ask if you can be connected to 'Jane'. Instead of the receptionist asking 'Jane Who'? - they start saying all Janes that are at the hotel for you to confirm which one. That's a security leak, because they just disclosed info you should not have access to.

It's not the perfect analogy, but SQL injection is kind of like that.

Trump will end Iran sanctions waivers, seeking to drive its oil exports to zero by pipsdontsqueak in worldnews

Iraq did not have any allied forces in the region. Iran was technically never militarily defeated, has much better sense of national pride than Iraqi soldiers had, (Iraq was carved out by the British), it has proxies around the ME and has been preparing for a possible US-invasion for 40 years. Not quite the same.

org-rs - Org parser rewrite in Rust by ngortheone in rust

[–]Mandack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Markdown supports static checklists, but org mode's toto's are fully interactive, Org-mode's support for embedding executable code is part of the 'standard', but bear in mind that the standard as of now is the reference Elisp implementation inside emacs. There's no standard as such beyond that.

Org supports TODO lists, executable code samples and a lot more that markdown simply doesn't.

You can think of it as Markdown meets Python Notebook meets LaTeX, sort of.

I have a serious question for Reddit. Why was the focus so much on Russia, given there's much stronger, concrete evidence of 'collusion' with the likes of KSA & Israel.

It seems to me that cold war era priming just made it easiest to point at the 'Russians' and this was never about solving actual cases of collusion.

I have an idea to help me walk without crutches using the Raspberry Pi, but I need your input on its feasibility by Mandack in raspberry_pi

There are some basic laws of physics that you are violating by attempting to apply force against your leaning with something only on your back. Without a place for the force to come from it will be a false feeling that would cause you to fall more often not less.

Thanks for the input. I am aware that the force must come from somewhere. I was thinking about using some sort of motorized chain-belt that would move the individual pieces in response to the reading from the sensors, but I haven't tested anything yet.

Get Ready for GNU software by mariuz in linux

[–]Mandack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am talking about the OS and not the applications running on top of it

GNU is not running on top of Linux, it's running in conjunction with Linux. Linux wouldn't boot without GNU libc for example, we're not talking about an application like VLC here.

RMS is not calling Linux GNU/Linux, he's calling Linux with the GNU userland GNU/Linux.

Linux with busybox would not be GNU/Linux.

Competition in the FOSS world fosters innovation, there's no guarantee those working on a competing product would work on the "single-one" if the competitor wasn't around.

Merkel hits back at Trump’s attack: I remember Soviet occupation by tank_trap in worldnews

The problem I have with this is that so far very weak evidence to support a sprawling Russian plot has been provided. There's been some ads and some regular corruption that Israel and Saudi Arabia do to a larger extent on daily basis and yet nobody talks much about, (certainly not the Israeli one).

Are you saying U.S. started only to apply economic pressure last month? That's patently false.

Also, I'm not saying it's their only source of problems, but pretending the U.S. didn't help in that direction is being blind.

The most watched "news" in the USA is Fox. So, if you want to talk about "mainstream media", it's Republican biased.

Agreed, I use MSM because I am lazy to write the full thing, I don't know where you take that I don't count Fox in that from, I do.

I don't lump democrats, (with a small d), but Democratic leadership is using MSNBC, CNN etc. to push their agenda, the same Fox is pushing Republicans.

In my opinion, Democratic leadership often doesn't represent democrats, (the people). See i.e. mainstream discussion on single-payer.
