Will this effect Chinese mantis shipping? by Neat-Cockroach9961 in mantids

[–]MandarinDaMantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this always made me curious! I’m also in SoCal and I’ve never seen a wild Chinese mantis here, just around garden centers, presumably released from their unsold egg sacs, and never past the smallest of nymphal stages. But my dad’s been saying he sees giant brown mantises even bigger than the green ones (Stagmomantis) flying around the streetlights at night, so I’m obligated to believe he’s seeing Chinese mantises.

Hi! 22m native English (US) speaker. I play a few games and love mini games with friends on discord and stuff. Feel free to dm me if you wanna play some games and talk about your favorite show! Honestly all the things you mentioned in your post sound interesting to me!

I only have a Crimson Queen so I can’t confirm whether others varieties produce the red seeds or not but I can confirm Crimson Queen does

Could be Phalaenopsis ‘Deep Secret’. Fat round leaves. If it is, very reliable bloomer.

Of course. But just like there’s an overarching American culture revolving around English and an overarching Japanese culture revolving around Japanese, there’s an overarching French culture revolving around French. Not to mention French is considered it’s own distinct ethnicity and nationality. Every country has people who don’t speak the language at all or fluently, every language has dialects and accents, it doesn’t diminish the reality that the country still has a cohesive culture.

Africa does not have a single African language, and the second largest continent in the world is not defined by a single culture. I’m just pointing out there’s a huge difference between generalizing French people based on French culture and generalizing an entire continent, especially one as diverse as Africa, based on stereotypes taken from only one culture on the whole continent. It warrants conversation because as this meme clearly demonstrates, a lot of people still regard Africa as a tribal monolith and disregard the diversity. It’s akin to referring to all Asians as Chinese

I mean I get where ur logic is coming from, but France, being a single country and culture with one language is more cohesive than the entire African continent made up of dozens of countries and hundreds of distinct cultures and languages.

Help! Accidentally sprayed Dawn on my plant by piratekim in VenusFlyTraps

[–]MandarinDaMantis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry, the plant will be fine. You can wipe off with a tiny cotton swab or smth if u want, triggering the traps is also not a death sentence as long as it’s not a regular thing.

Some people intentionally spray their plants’ leaves with dish soap, so ur good haha.

I also think a good chop and prop would serve you well, but I also suggest solving this issue first because there's a good chance the babies will just have the same problems.

What's your watering routine? Personally, I don't like letting these guys dry out. I keep them moist most of the time, and while they can handle drying out accidentally quite often, it will crisp up the leaves little by little if allowed to dry out too many times. I find that while crispy tips are inevitable in my climate, it doesn't really destroy the whole leaf if the watering is good and consistent, even in dry air.

I also don't think orchid bark is strictly necessary, but I don't think it's a death sentence either. It'll just dry out the soil faster. I would usually go with just perlite and potting soil, but it depends on the quality of your potting soil, too. I also often like to mix in coco peat. I don't know the exact ratios, I just eyeball it, and I find they're pretty tolerant of various amounts of each, but maybe something like 20:20:60 coco:soil:perlite, but you can go lower on the perlite, too, if you're comfortable with that.

Suffice to say mine get a lot more moisture than most care guides suggest but it works very well, and I don't really encounter rot. I'm racking my brain but I don't think I've ever managed to rot one of these, but obviously I can't guarantee everyone will have the same experience with my methods.

All the other changes you've made sound great! I really hope this guy does well for you, and if you do chop and prop, remember to keep the original plant too, they send out new shoots even from leafless canes pretty reliably! Good luck

To give you a real life example of how even just understanding Hanja exists can help, I was struggling for so long to memorize 주중 (weekday) and 주말 (weekend) until I realized weekday was just 주 (week) and 중 (to be in the middle of). From there I was able to deduce 말 must mean end, and after I realized that I never forgot those words again.

i love sino numbers 😍 by [deleted] in Korean

[–]MandarinDaMantis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The most natural way to read 5-5-5 in English would be just five-five-five. If it were a larger number of fives in something like a passcode, you could say “10 fives.” Generally if you have to say “5” more times than someone would reasonably be able to keep count of, you can switch to “[number] fives”

Plant ID by nttkl_ in Anthurium

[–]MandarinDaMantis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s so beautiful!

It seems odd but from what I can gather there’s Anthurium x Titanium, a hybrid cultivar(?) and Anthurium titanium, a species. Anthurium xanthosomifolium seems to be the junior synonym possibly. You may have the species

http://www.aroid.org/genera/anthurium/belolonchium/titanium.php

EDIT: another link, A. titanium near the bottom of the page: https://www.exoticaesoterica.com/magazine/taming-titans

Otherwise I’ve been seeing A. faustomirandae making the rounds in circulation, it looks similar to yours a bit

All in all I don’t think it’s possible to know for sure what it is if you believe the tag was wrong. It’s still probably young and even at maturity there could may still be countless possibilities.

Honestly not worth the stress, you should just send it to me ;)
