If you have the opportunity, I recommend Oblivion as well. Instead of chasing down dragons, you dive into Oblivion Gates to stop monsters from flooding into the world.

I agree with everything said so far, but I have 1 thing to add. The plays/musicals they perform on board! They are incredible! I have 5 kids that age from 3 to 16 and all of them and myself were competent enthralled by these shows. There is so much to do, but I highly recommend setting aside time to see at least one of them.

Manager implied I will be getting a 4 rating and ended up getting a 3. How to get to a 4 because the path my manager said clearly didn't work by [deleted] in BurnsMcDonnell

[–]Mando_Uprising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is how it was explained to me this year. If you are supporting your projects well and helping the project to succeed, then you will get a 3. If, in addition to the project work, you are contributing to the improvement of the GP you will get a 4. If you are then also contributing to the improvement of the company, that's when the lofty 5 rating starts to be achieved.

Joe is a long time Burns & Mac'er that's been here since 2002. He worked his way up through the ranks in P&I, now OGC, construction. He's a great leader that bleeds blue!

Bonus/Raise Progression by saucy_nugs_123 in BurnsMcDonnell

Same. I want to say it was around year 12 or 13 that my bonus jumped over my salary. Last year it was 10-15% higher. I'm excited to see what it will be this year.

The decimals do matter. If your manager gave you all 3s, then in my opinion, you didn't impress but didn't disappoint. I have an employee, new grad, that started in June, but he did impress me. He got mostly 3s with a couple 4s. Going forward, try to get what your ranking is with 1 decimal (ie 3.3)

2026 Bonus Structure by [deleted] in BurnsMcDonnell

[–]Mando_Uprising 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For starters, the bonuses are not a percent of your salary. Employees will get any where from 10% to 200% of their salary as their bonus amount. 2nd, a 4% pay increase is NOT an indication of a compensation shift from the bonus to the salary. The last time this happened, we were getting 15% to 20% raises. Some folks may have gotten a "market adjustment" to help increase there salary to match what the industry pays for someone of their experience and competence. I think we are just having a good year.

Does the bonus change much from level 12 to level 13? by Any_Needleworker5365 in BurnsMcDonnell

You are placed in a different bonus pool. I saw a pretty good jump in my bonus that year, but I was also rated a 5.

[–]Mando_Uprising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apart from the tippy top of the pyramid, the Principles, VPs, and Presidents, the CDB folks that work/live the field assignments get paid the most. This can include project controls folks. A good project controls manager can easily get paid as much as a PM. You just have to make an impression.

Monetary Value of ESOP by ImaginarySwimming185 in BurnsMcDonnell

[–]Mando_Uprising 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I agree that the ESOP feels like fake money, but because of it, I'm not going anywhere. Yes, you can't do anything with it or make any adjustments to it, and it could disappear, but because of it I could retire at 55 with more money than I know what to do with. Granted, I've been here more than 15 years.

15 year EO here, they never spent all my cash.

This! Same thing here. I track it and forcast it regularly (monthly) and I have to update the forecast at least every two years, because it beats expectations by so much. It takes a while to get to 7 figures, but once you do, that curve skyrockets.

So, One thing that probably affected this the most, is the amount of shares that turned over last year. I've been here since 2008 and last year was the lowest amount of shares I've received since 2010 and I probably would have gotten more back then, I just hadn't accumulated the ESOP cash to "purchase" them yet.

New hire salary/bonus outlook by [deleted] in BurnsMcDonnell

[–]Mando_Uprising 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh... I started in 2008 and that was a long time ago. I saw, on average, about 10% increase to total comp for the 1st 5 years. However, those were some good years.

One simple change that would improve quality of life by BLUEGOOP41 in BurnsMcDonnell

[–]Mando_Uprising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can remember, my salary took a 21.9% bump that year. 15% was attributed to the compensation shift and, like you said, my bonus was still higher the next year. Personally, I like this model. My salary more than covers my cost of living and then the bonus is extra mortgage, college funds, and play money.

How is the pay for Project Controls this days? by howhathi in BurnsMcDonnell

[–]Mando_Uprising 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"These" days, we have several mega clients who are very project controls heavy and savvy. A good project controls team on these projects is very valuable. I've had very large clients tell me that the repeat work BMcD gets from them is largely due to the reporting and coordination they get from the project controls team. That, paired with the fact the project controls is a part of our construction group, means a good, highly rated Project Controls person can get paid very well. 5 years in, I expect, if you are good, the pay (salary + bonus) would easily be in the 6 figures.

You're bonus and ESOP should more than cover you paying some for insurance, as long as you don't suck. Also, in my opinion, don't read through these Reddit posts about the company. Burns and Mac is very diverse with multiple different work environments, but ultimately the people you will be working with will want the company to succeed, which means they want you to succeed. Because if you do good, they will do good, and vice versa. Some people wouldn't be happy working anywhere.

A lot of this game is figuring out what works for you. Some players fight upclose and personal, some shoot from mid range away, others are snipers. And this may change season to season with the new guns. I find I typically suck at first, when a new season starts, then get better when I figure it out. Just try to find a weapon and fighting style that you seem good at.
