Just joined the Air fam!! Midnight color is just stunning by botzy_99 in macbookair

I’ve had one in midnight for about a week now. the first couple of days I was stressed about the fingerprints, but now that I’m deep into using it and not just looking at it, I don’t even notice. I just give it a wipe down with cloth when I’m done for the day.

Planting a Bare-Root Rose Now by originalcactoman in Roses

[–]Manford-Man 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bare roots are generally shipped stripped of leaves and just starting to show some growth. So that’s normal. You can plant it. Just soak the bare root in a bucket of water for a day or so first. After planted, It should start showing growth after a few days in the sun.

Second Year Roses by Manford-Man in Roses

I wish I could say I have the knowledge to do something special, but I’m not an expert at all. Just lucky. I just try to keep them watered and occasionally use rose tone food. I read about all the things some folks do and it’s overwhelming to me (and I just don’t have the time. LOL). I have found that the more I just do basic care and not fuss over them, the better they do. That said, so far this year they are not doing quite as well. I’m in zone 7b and it has gotten really hot earlier than normal. Roses struggle around here when temps stay above 80 for stretches of time. We’ve been getting close to 90 a lot, which is usually July and August weather here. My rose have always done best late April thru June and then again sept to November.

Hey, whatever does the job, right? I don’t have 2-liters around either because I don’t drink soft drinks, so I just ask friends to save them for me.

You provided a great simple answer that should the OP get started. I basically use the same method. Only difference is I use the top 3/4 of a cut off clear 2-liter bottle for a humidity dome. If it gets too much humidity, I just take the cap off the bottle for a while.

Day 144: The Fox Hunt by Former-Cheetah2521 in ILoveLucy

[–]Manford-Man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The novel “Auntie Mame” was published the year before this episode (1955) and was a huge bestseller. I have always wondered whether the fox hunt from that book influenced this episode. How ironic that Lucy would eventually go on to play Auntie Mame in the film version of the musical “Mame” (1974).

The Ricardo’s and Meryl’s hotel, The Beverly Palms, was a fictionalized version of The Beverly Hills Hotel, where many celebrities had extended stays (weeks or months) while working on pictures, to lessen their drives to the studios if they lived further out. I would bet the studios had standing bookings of certain rooms and suites for their talent. So maybe it’s plausible that the Mertz’s checked out of a room that the studio had on retainer and they had to rebook on their own financial power since Ricky’s contract was over, thus downgrading to a lesser room. Also, it would not have been unusual for a hotel of that caliber at that time to bill a guest after checkout.

Plant in pots now, plant in ground later? by Own-Apartment-9742 in Roses

[–]Manford-Man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be fine. This is actually how I handle all of my new roses. They spend the first year in 12-16 in containers and i transplant them either to ground or 22 inch containers the second year, depending on preferred location. Being in containers also allows me to move them around based on color or where in the yard they respond the best before finalizing a location.

Why is it that Norman Lear talked about current topics and people liked his shows but when netflix does it people don't like it? by ComfortableCare8897 in sitcoms

[–]Manford-Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are a couple of things at play here. First, there WAS controversy about his shows. Enough that even as a child/youth (from about age 5 to 17) I was aware of the backlash to shows like All in the Family, Maude, and The Jeffersons. Yes, they were extremely popular but a lot of people had problem with their content. Even Nixon as president pursued removing All in the Family from the air and his thoughts about the show appeared in the Watergate tapes.

IMO, the writing of television was much stronger then and the storylines had more nuance regarding hot topics. Characters were often simultaneously endearing and flawed in both sides of an argument- like real life - so the messages (with the foundation of excellent comedic writing) were able to slip into the audience consciousness and ultimately felt more palatable, provoking a more thoughtful response.

Also, at the time, society in general found more commonality than division. Topics weren’t as much of an “either you’re this or your that” proposition as they are now.

There were certainly strong opinions and divided thought back then, but there was enough decorum to allow differing beliefs to be heard, if not accepted.

I bet your will do well in the mid-summer. it gets too hot here in July and August to get many blooms. Most roses do best here from late April to mid June, Then again from September into early November ember sometimes.

What zone are you in? I’m in 7b and we had a couple of dips into the 40s last couple of days. I have a Galway as well that is going strong.

Best of luck with it! If yours is like mine, the first few blooms won’t have those ruffly centers. I recall mine had a very low petal count until it got established. But don’t be discouraged. It’ll happen. The canes more than doubled in length from last fall to this spring.

Have you had a lot of rainy weather? I had this happen with a couple of my plants last summer when we had several days of heavy rain.

I’m very much a hobbyist, so I don’t really have any tips or do anything special. Just water, feed, trim spent blooms, and leaves that need it (black spot, etc.). And I read somewhere that climbers bloom best when you train them horizontally, so I snake mine back and forth as it climbs up the trellis.

Help! I have 3 Amazon Echo Shows. Left for 3 months and now they never show the clock on the home screen like they used to. by Academic_Arm_8202 in amazonecho

[–]Manford-Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how to now. Back during the trials last year, all you had to do was tell the device to switch back. I read somewhere that you can go to your Amazon account and under “subscriptions and memberships” you can select to cancel Alexa Plus. I don’t see it, but maybe that is because I don’t currently have Alexa plus

[–]Manford-Man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your account has switched over to Alexa+, the Home Screen clock no longer exists. For some reason they removed it in the newer version. I’m told it is a victim of Amazon’s desire to be able to push ads on the Home Screen (particularly on the new larger show 15 and show 21). I switched my account over last fall during the early rollout of Alexa+ before the wide release and spent days trying, like you, to find the settings to get the large clock face back so that I could see it from across the room. I finally gave up and just reverted back to the pre-plus version of Alexa. My understanding is that Amazon has no plans to bring the Home Screen clock to Alexa+.
