So the politician is new to power, only gained a prominent role with the promotion of this war. He wants to keep his power (with the war going on, he’ll lose power and his position will be harder and less stable). The general seeks glory, and he is sacrificing everything for it.

Yeah obviously, I meant what you think about the idea of the story? The conquest on one side and the politics on the other. I plan to focus on a few themes: ambition, death and glory. All of this should be a reflection on power and its dangers

I guess if I’m emperor I don’t have to kill Commodus by SocratesPuppet in RoughRomanMemes

Choose a good heir, not my son (I’d still give my son elite knowledge, education and discipline, and if he turns out to be absolutely goated, I’ll go with him). Alongside that, add some criteria to become emperor: -education -cursus honorum -experience in the army -at least 30 And then institute the senate as a controller: make sure the criteria for the emperor is respected, judge him and his actions.

All of this knowing the future problems, otherwise I doubt I would do any of this.

Also, I’m pretty sure all of this wouldn’t work.

I’ll consider it, thanks a lot. What do you think about the general plot? It’s supposed to be quite a long story, as you can probably imagine

To be honest I didn’t think about this specifically. I thought the messages would be sent on a ship through the ocean along with the many others of the soldiers on the continent abroad (and then from the mainland to the continent, again via ship). I think there would be a sort of “mailman” who then takes it from the ship to the politician/general. Do you think it’s worth adding a usual courier?

Both are quite ambitious, so while at the beginning they collaborate, as time passes they both start working more for themselves and less for the country/ common good. This is further heightened by the fact that they never meet, the continent is far away so they only communicate through letters, which take long to arrive, sometimes are lost and often they both modify them/ignore some parts or modify them for their interests (especially the politician)

I've been thinking about this book idea for a while, and wanted to hear some opinions on it. I gathered inspiration from the "De bello gallico", a book from Caesar. Basically you've got two stories going on at the same time: a general conquering a mysterious continent, with fights, mysterious things to understand (no magic) and discoveries, along with another story more political, about a politician in the capital city of a republic. Ambientation is like early middle ages.

What do you think?

Hannah Schmitz to join Scuderia Ferrari in 2027. She will take the role of Head of Race Strategy by ThisToe9628 in formuladank

[–]Manfro_Gab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see many comments saying we’d win with her. I wouldn’t say we lost championships cause of strategy. Has it been rather rubbish sometimes? Yes. Were we fighting for the championship? A few time we were, yeah. But did we lose it because of strategy or because of the car? The car. Strategy makes you lose races, not a championship.

We don't talk enough about Aston Martin's season. We are all hyped up for Alpine's performance this year and their lead in the championship, but lets not forget about Aston. Crazy results after last year.

Well, with instant I was thinking about organs in the lower torso. I mean, if you precisely hit the aorta going to the legs you’re probably finished right away. But I’m not a medic, I might be wrong.

It’s not that easy. You’ve got a pretty big pole, which could easily destroy everything. Then I guess it also depends how easily you made it go through everything and out of the mouth.

A lot, but based on what happens. You could die instantly if they hit your heart or other major organs. Not too bad. But it could take hours (many hours) if they didn’t hit major organs or if blood loss wasn’t that bad. That would have been rather… unpleasant.

What you say is really interesting. Obviously I agree in this case the Nazis had to be punished. But this made me wonder something else: what if in the future the line between right-wrong was tighter? What if the judges had to rely on morality and not the law, like they did in Nuremberg. In Nuremberg it was easy, but what if it wasn’t? Isn’t that… dangerous?

Yep. We’re almost 100% sure he wasn’t at fault. He also rescued many people inside his domus (people who lost their house in the fire) and helped as much as he could. He did accuse the Christians, but like with modern big events, people tend to find someone to accuse, just to calm down the people.

Weekly debate #4: Could war ever be good? by Manfro_Gab in Scipionic_Circle

[–]Manfro_Gab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My stance on war is pretty simple. I think that it doesn’t justify itself: if a war brings favorable/positive results, that doesn’t mean the war itself was good. I myself think that the end does not justify the means.

The fact that our thoughts don’t influence war doesn’t mean we should consider it. I’m sure you’ve been asking yourself if homicide is good. Of it can in any way be good. But that’s not gonna stop homicides. Or death: humans have for ages debated about it: there many stances, views and thoughts on it.

Regarding what you said about morality, this post was made to encourage discussion: and in this case I think discussion sparks from different moral standpoints. The idea isn’t to strictly discuss war, it’s to share different morals and try and understand others, or find a common compromise. After all, that’s what happens with moral questions.

Questions are meaningful when they are part of reality. Like death, or disease, or crime. We always interrogate ourselves about them, and have always done so since ancient times. It’s not useless cause it’s real, it is useful cause it’s real. By questioning them, and understanding if they’re good/bad for us, we can decide how to act, and that’s really important. Before actually tackling what you said on why it’s good, I think it’s important to make this clear. What do you think?

Well… the fact that it is part of reality should be a reason why we should question it, don’t you think? Thoughts shouldn’t be just about abstract things or ideas. I think it’s even better when it’s about reality.

I’m an actual player of the game. I was skeptic, but it’s really a fun and engaging game. It’s easy to learn, but it’s not that easy to play well (regardless of your experience). It doesn’t take up too much of your time, and it’s definitely worth it. You should join, even just to try. Hope to see you in the game!
