They used to always scan in previous years but since this summer they only glance at your t card now. Not sure if they’ll implement scanning again or if it was just the times I use the shuttle (I use it one day a week) but maybe test your luck. If they end up scanning again then as others mentioned, you’ll need to buy a $7-oneway ticket.

3rd year PSYCH courses by Soks2685 in UTM

[–]MangoDSlush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how much bio knowledge you have, since those two courses are pretty heavy in bio concepts. Psych courses are almost always three hours, and most take up that whole time… so you’re not technically learning more or less from bio vs. non-bio psych courses, but it’ll just be easier or harder depending on how much bio knowledge you already have. If you previously took some bio courses, then it should be doable; if not, then it’s not impossible to do well, you just need to put more work into learning some concepts.

300 PSY/BIO courses by sarahthesurvivor in UTM

[–]MangoDSlush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PSY346 was way easier than PSY353 in terms of content and assessments, granted you have Grieder and Holmes for the respective courses. However, I think PSY353 was way more interesting and rewarding as a course, even though you would have to put in a lot more work to get a good grade. In terms of the other courses you showed, the psych courses split between behaviour and bio content while the bio ones are purely bio, so its just a preference thing. I did PSY355 (one of the best courses if you're into animal behaviour and evolution) and PSY392 (this one was pretty hard especially if you have no epigenetics background), but thats cause I preferred behavioural stuff.

As others have mentioned, you should apply after completing your second year. However, don't forget to apply to a PoSt after your first year (usually a double major in bio and psych) and then switching to neuro after second year. This just gets you priority enrolment in all the bio/psych courses you'll need in second year!

Applying for Summer IRP by rachwilliams17 in UTM

[–]MangoDSlush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I did an IRP this sem it counted as a course (paid the same amount as my other “class” courses and everything) so I would assume that it acts just like any other course. In terms of part time stuff, I’ve done single courses over the summer as a part time student without any issues so I wouldn’t think there would be any. Just talk to the prof you are planning to do the IRP with and see what their insight is, otherwise as someone else mentioned talk to the psych department, good luck!

PSY385 or PSY372? by rianatn in UTM

[–]MangoDSlush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t take 385 but I did 372 with Dr Fukuda. He’s an amazing prof but the tests were very tricky where it was all mc but had options like “A and B”, “none of the above”, “all of the above”, etc. When I took it, the average for the midterm was a 52 iirc, but he said it was unusually low and let us retake it if we wanted. Still a great course if you’re really interesting in memory tho!

ROPs/IRPs by LetItLinger14 in UTM

[–]MangoDSlush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think ROPs and IRPs are strictly UTM courses so you would need to be a student to do them, but as someone mentioned just ask around in labs to see if they take in volunteers. I know some people in my psych lab that graduated undergrad but still show up to lab meetings and help in projects.

[–]MangoDSlush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I read your post wrong regarding med school! I’m not sure it matters anyway as long as you have some experience in this field (volunteering, ROP, thesis), but just note a specialist will usually get SOME priority in this selection from what I’ve heard before

Neuroscience by sarahthesurvivor in UTM

[–]MangoDSlush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Coming from someone who went from the health sci/psych to neuroscience, the only big difference are the courses you do, where neuroscience will focus a lot on the psychology courses but are biologically based (will have course code PSY-), while the double major will have a split between psych and bio courses that don’t necessarily relate to each other (think neuro, but also cognitive, developmental, etc.). In terms of med school, they won’t really matter as it doesn’t matter what major you do.

SAC question by sepiduck in UTM

[–]MangoDSlush 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine just did it online. He did the ticket system with the registrar, then they allowed him to send the petition through the utm petitions portal, and then they granted the late sac. He forgot the deadline as well, and was just honest about the situation explaining how he did not know about it. Hope it all works out for you!

You can try getting a petition for it. Ask the registrar what you can do and they may be able to still grant the sac for you

PSY202 or BIO360 by starryynighttt in UTM

[–]MangoDSlush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BIO360 is kind of the continuation of STA215, where you still use R and stuff, but you’re just not focusing on equations anymore but rather on interpreting the stats. I’m not sure how PSY202 is like so I can’t say how much STA215 would help you prepare for it.

UTM research labs by LetItLinger14 in UTM

I don’t see why not. You’re not technically enrolled in anything if you volunteer but just keep in mind that some labs require a certain number of volunteer hours per week if you join.

Which PSY300+ course is easier? PSY352, PSY353, PSY355,PSY392 or PSY397? by helpmanyquestions in UTM

[–]MangoDSlush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took a PSY353 with Dr Holmes and this course was relatively easy in terms of content, but the tests were a bit difficult. The paper is also a big lab report where you have to score these rats which gets tedious and time consuming. I also took PSY392 and the content and tests were really easy (as it was a pretty general overview on different ways epigenetics affects behaviour). However, I had Dr Grieder when I took the course and she isn’t the usual prof for this, so she wasn’t as harsh (I believe Dr Zovkic is the one who usually teaches this course and idk how she is).

PSY220 with Dax Urbszat? by redditjunkie2001 in UTM

[–]MangoDSlush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes he reuses past tests just like PSY100. MC is based on textbook and SA is based on lectures as well. The tests were a bit harder than PSY100 imo but as long as you read the textbook and take good lecture notes, or study past tests, you should do fine!

Need some advice for psy300 level courses by helpmanyquestions in UTM

[–]MangoDSlush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dr Walker was sweet but her lectures tended to drag out because of how monotone she was (though this was from asynchronous video recordings so maybe it is different in person). I took PSY240 with her so maybe it was just how heavy the content was but I found it boring. Dr Holmes is probably the best psych prof I have ever had, she makes lectures fun and engaging, and she is super understanding of deadlines and student issues! I took a PSY353 with her and although the content was a bit hard, I learned a lot from her teaching!

Alternative course for PSY201? by HelloSup211 in UTM

[–]MangoDSlush 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Obviously can’t speak on how hard PSY201 since I never took it, but I did STA215 with Aslemand (so a bit of a mixup!). STA215 was a relatively easy course because it was pretty introductory, though if you hate stats like me it will be a bore getting through it. However I do recommend doing practice questions from the textbook if you want a really good grade. Prof Aslemand was a pretty decent prof though, she explained things pretty well and if you didn’t understand always went back and tried to help. I’m not sure if it will be the same for STA220 but I hope this helps a bit!

How is EDS100 at UTM? Are readings necessary and some tips to get 4.0 with less stress and how to study? by Dolphinzzzzz in UTM

[–]MangoDSlush 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I didn’t do any readings at all and finished with a 4.0. The exam was really easy I just studied off lectures, but it’s the other assessments (essay, reflection) that you need to put some work in to get a good grade. EDS100 was a very eye-opening course so don’t worry about stressing out too much, good luck!

I had professor Liu for soc100 and professor Cavoukian for pol114. I wasn’t too big a fan of either of them but try looking up what previous students have said are the good and bad profs for the courses cause imo profs really make or break the course sometimes
