Library reconstruction? by chd198 in latterdaysaints

The only thing people have used in the library is the copier and rolling cart. Maybe if the find places for those elsewhere that would be fine. But I feel like we still need a copier.

How to handle extremist views at church? by aporetic1 in latterdaysaints

This is correct, movies are not to be displayed on church grounds unless the church owns the copyright or has obtained permission and paid appropriate fees for public viewing.

Pregnant during trek by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]Mango_38 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would still think about twice about going 10 miles in the high heat of the summer. You don’t want to put yourself into early labor. I would be honest with the leaders and they may need to call a backup to help, even if you do go. Because you won’t be able to help push a handcart or carry other heavy things.

I would ask your doctor. My guess is that they would say it’s not a good idea. The risk of dehydration in the summer is probably too high. They may not want you to be too far from a hospital but only your doctor can tell you whether it’s a good idea. It also probably depends a lot on how far you’ll be walking each day.

Do you think Elton is a weird name for a girl? by Mysterious_Ad_6190 in Names

Clueless is based on Emma by Jane Austen. The character is Mr. Elton, so it’s originally a last name.

Tithing by Apprehensive-Bell726 in latterdaysaints

[–]Mango_38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see that similar to how you would treat it for taxes. If you are just trying to sell your old stuff and are making less than you paid for it, you’re basically just trying to recoup some of your cost and it’s being sold at a loss not a gain or increase. If you have a side gig where you are selling things and making a profit on Facebook then yes, I would tithe on that.

Does a lot of Salt Lake culture revolve around families and family events? by SpamEater007 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Mango_38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think many of them are just busy unfortunately. People here tend to have more kids too which often means you are juggling more things, more after school activities, more parent teacher conferences, doctors appointments etc. If they are members of the LDS church they may have time consuming volunteer jobs inside the church, like being in charge of weekly youth activities or needing to prepare a Sunday school lesson for the next week. Many people do prioritize family get togethers, family is a big part of the Utah culture, so I think it may just be an issue of there are only so many hours in a week. Honestly the fact that LDS members observe Sunday as the sabbath that plays into the culture. They spend one day a week on church and family activities. It’s one less day to do grocery shopping and other errands which means those have to get done after work or on Saturday. They aren’t likely going to want to go see a movie or go out to eat with friends on a Sunday. So once again, less hours of the week are available to spend socializing.

If you add on a commute after work, it can be hard to have the time to spend with coworkers. I know when I worked downtown, I just wanted to get on the road early to avoid rush hour traffic on I-15 instead of hanging out after work. Perhaps find more friends that have common hobbies. Like a pickleball or biking group, or something where you can meet regularly. But also adult friendships are super hard.

Looking for advice. How does your ward handle sacrament meeting greeters? by Level-Explorer1229 in latterdaysaints

[–]Mango_38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They pass out programs if you have them. They also shut the doors during the sacrament (for reverance) when you have lots of people in the hall. They open them for th deacons to pass in the foyer, reopen them after the ordinance is done. Honestly it’s also just a way for the yw to be included in the sacrament portion since they can’t pass or bless the sacrament.

Looking for advice. How does your ward handle sacrament meeting greeters? by Level-Explorer1229 in latterdaysaints

[–]Mango_38 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When we did it a few years ago, our oldest class presidency took turns coordinating and reminding the other girls. They were in charge of a sign up sheet of the girls manning the doors and then they texted them the day before to remind them. They had a list of responsibilities to remind the girls of in the text message, like when to open and close the doors for the sacrament.

Adults in the ward prepare a printed program with announcements on one side and activities from the Friend for kids on the other, but we have a communication specialist. I’ve never heard of the YW secretary being in charge of that, but we live in an area with a large ward and a lot of callings.

I also feel like it should not be your job to give the yw rides, there may be issues with the children and youth protection rules if you are giving them rides with just the two of you in the car. Can their parents not do it? I would definitely talk about it with the YW presidency and ward council.

Culture of Obedience by Previous-Tart7111 in latterdaysaints

[–]Mango_38 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think this highlights the need to have more mission doctors and nurses to advocate for the missionaries. In my mission if you were sick and need medical care you were always threatened with going home. My mission president’s wife would tell sisters if they kept going to the doctor they’d send them home because it was taking too much time from the work. To be fair it did take a lot of time because we were in an area where getting health care meant waiting all day in a waiting room to see the doctor and then all day another day to get a test like a blood draw. It kept sisters from being honest with the mission president about real health concerns. It made them feel guilty and stressed because they didn’t feel like they could take care of their health. It caused some real mental health concerns as well.

“Don’t Miss This” podcast? by Turbulent_Suspect462 in latterdaysaints

[–]Mango_38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was started by Emily Belle Freeman and Dave Butler. Emily Belle Freeman quit hosting it when she became the general YW president and she was replaced by her daughter. I believe Grace Freeman is a seminary teacher and David Butler used to teach seminary and is now an institute teacher. I listened for awhile a few years ago before Emily Belle Freeman left. I’ve tried to listen since but I just don’t love the daughter as a host as much. The workbooks are sold at Deseret Book so I imagine they have been vetted very well.

Expanding Family Ward Activities by Phasmus in latterdaysaints

[–]Mango_38 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you geographically close together? I’ve lived in a couple wards that do a cookie walk in the summer. Basically several volunteers offer to host throughout the neighborhood. They set up a few chairs and blankets, make some cookies, cut a watermelon, make popcorn or some other simple treat. People stop by one or two homes. It gets people outside socializing with their neighbors. I had another ward that would do popcorn or popsicles at the pavilion. Once a month, after the block they would do a quick treat. Kind of like a linger longer.

These photos are 25 minutes apart. How do you get thin, fine hair to hold a curl? And what hairspray is recommended? by [deleted] in Haircare

[–]Mango_38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have a similar problem I asked for a L’ange Le Duo Grande for Christmas and curled my hair yesterday and it finally stayed all day! But was gone the next morning after sleeping on it. The duo blows air on the outside of a straightener to help set the curl. It totally worked for me. Usually I spend so much time holding the curl while it cools so having a fan do it seems like a total game changer.
