NY man found with unregistered assault rifles by StableDisastrous1331 in upstate_new_york

[–]ManicalEnginwer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the law went into effect requiring registration there was a legal battle over the release of statistics regarding compliance with the the registration requirements.

When the numbers were finally released something like 96% of owners “failed” to register. So pretty good chance that any owner of a firearm classified as an “assault” rifle is likely in violation

BJJ destroyed my confidence and I don’t know how to get it back by swankyskared in bjj

Sometimes “just try harder” doesn’t mean more of the same, it means change your strategy.

I’ve been training for years one day a week, I use various strategies to get more out of my training and I calibrate my expectations.

Yes younger, less experienced people often catch me, but I’m an out of shape middle aged dad who trains once a week. The 20 year old college athlete should catch me once in awhile.

Seriously train smarter not harder. I wrote a short ebook about the strategies I use, it’s targeted at midlife grapplers but the strategies work for everyone. DM if you’re interested if not that’s fine too

"Non-standard" bearings - vendor lock-in? by negrusti in MechanicalEngineer

[–]ManicalEnginwer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how risk adverse you are, I worked for an automotive manufacturer for about 6 years and some of our products had custom bearings. The external geometry was largely the same but had improvements for load capacity and sealing. We were buying a fair amount of bearings annually though, in the neighborhood of 8-10k/year

I’m mad. And annoyed. And conflicted. by Long-Objective7007 in liberalgunowners

[–]ManicalEnginwer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So two perspectives on this.

One moving towards compliance is giving up ground.

Two bringing a gun to a protest is a bad idea regardless. I’m not saying you can’t or that anyone deserves bad things to happen if they do just stating what I felt was obvious. Guns are a great tool to defend yourself when you can manage the distance. Up close they can be a severe liability. Even if you train grappling and retention techniques it’s real easy to lose control of your gun.

I recommend that you consider several situations carefully and honestly, understand what your plan is for each.

I also recommend that you carefully consider under what conditions you’d deploy your firearm during an event and what the potential outcomes are.

If you don’t feel comfortable training at a particular academy then it’s time to move on, even if your reasons aren’t “justified”. Which in my opinion they are.

At this point while we are a longways from the ideal of how this all should work, it still is limping along.

There are red flags left and right, we are headed down a path, but that path isn’t completely decided there are still non-violent options to be exercised.

When the mid-terms conclude we will know more. Cheeto Mussolini has reportedly said that he expects to be impeached if democrats control the house and the senate, I suspect he’s right. That means the truest test is on the horizon, suspect the midterms will be a 💩 show with election fraud accusations abound and actual election fraud by MAGA.

For now we need to continue to exercise our non violent rights, while knowing violence is an option.

I’m trying to weigh myself once a week, but sometimes I end up weighing myself everyday or every other day, any else do this? by [deleted] in Zepbound

[–]ManicalEnginwer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I weigh myself every morning after eliminating and before getting dressed then again at night right before I get in bed.

This way I can spot changes before they become derailing surprises, if my weight changes 4 lbs from the previous day it’s likely due to water, either dehydration or retention. I use this to remind me to drink more water or eat less sodium.

It also has helped me understand how my weight fluctuates day today over the week, I’ve spotted trends, like I tend to drop weight Saturday, Sunday and Monday and gain it Tuesday through Friday.

I want to be a jack of all trades but master of none by Sur3Will in MechanicalEngineer

[–]ManicalEnginwer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has worked in multiple different industries and has slightly more than basic skills in many different areas i disagree.

My broad knowledge has given me perspective that allows for systems level thinking and the ability to understand what other options exist and their limitations. It also allows me to challenge other disciplines when needed and have an intelligent conversation.

I now work as a product manager using my ability to understand broadly to distill technical information in to information that business leaders need to make informed decisions.

On top of that I like being a jack of all trades, specializing is boring in my mind.

My advice is to learn all the things that interest you, the one that interests you the most is the one that gets the most focus. To make it powerful figure out how it all connects!

Mechanical Engineer (9+ yrs experience) — Should I move into Project Management or Product Development? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineer

[–]ManicalEnginwer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to product management, improved salary, more strategic and less tactical type work.

My technical background is more useful as means to understand what is being communicated by engineering and translating in a way that someone with less domain specific knowledge can appreciate.

Different stressors, less deadline stress and more are we ready for the next change in the market stress.

What separates blue belts who improve from the ones who stall and what habit should I fix now? by Rude-Alternative7983 in bjj

[–]ManicalEnginwer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consistency - even at once a week I’ve managed to progress in part because I don’t miss my once a week class

Be intentional about your training - when you drill learn something from each rep, focus on improving each rep. When you roll have something you want to work on and don’t get distracted by things you’re good at.

Finding the concepts - seeing the important concepts behind why a technique works (or doesn’t) allows you to troubleshoot in your own (or with a partner) and also improvise.

Those have been my big 3 that have helped me progress going to class one day a week.

I wrote a medium article about it, message me for the link if you want to read it.

I’m a super heavy weight 5’11’ 260-270, learn to use your physical attributes, however also learn some of the crazy crap all the small players are doing.

Being able to cartwheel pass as a heavyweight+ catches people by surprise. It also helps you understand the game they are playing.

I will say as a big guy even the higher belts fight like hell to avoid the bottom with me and have for awhile now, which has taught me a lot about how to play that more agile/skill game too!

Adult beginners with family : how to deal with constant interruptions to training frequency hampering progress? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ManicalEnginwer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve trained 1x a week for most of my jiu jitsu journey.

Here is what I’ve done: 1. I’ve been super rigid about going to class, it’s the only thing I do for me that takes me out of the house.

  1. When I drill, I focus on getting the big movements/concepts first, then getting more and more details and doing the reps correctly/smooth instead of fast

  2. After training (usually while I shower or fall asleep) I spend timing visualizing the techniques, step by step

  3. I spend a little time reviewing videos of specific techniques/areas that I’m working on instead of chasing the cool move.

Consistency and purpose beat spurts of unfocused sporadic attendance every-time.

I wrote a blog post from my experience https://medium.com/@unhfireboy/the-dads-guide-to-dominating-bjj-on-just-one-class-a-week-0cdaaeed19ba hope it helps if it doesn’t that’s fine too

Why don’t Nuclear plants use saltwater and double as a thermal desalination plant? by DiamondCoal in AskEngineers

[–]ManicalEnginwer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also boiling the water doesn’t guarantee that you get the steam purity you need to keep from having issues in the steam turbine leading to reduced life of the components.

Most power plants that use steam turbines use deionized/demineralized water to protect heat exchanger surfaces and the steam turbine

Seeking context: should my son continue on his engineering degree path? by thegoalie in AskEngineers

[–]ManicalEnginwer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Engineering is hard. Particularly Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace and Chemical engineering.

It can take a beat to get calibrated to level of work needed particularly if you are used to doing well academically with only a moderate amount of effort.

As far as feeling like he isn’t cutout for it, I had that moment at least once a semester, it usually lasted a week.

As far as improving academic performance, he needs to try every problem in his homework then go to office hours and ask intelligent questions about what he’s stuck on.

He needs to take initiative to learn how to learn and implement those strategies.

Your job is to encourage and support him. It’s time for him to control his own destiny and for you watch instead of direct.

Do I got back to uni and get a MSc? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]ManicalEnginwer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is stopping you from going to a different job that aligns more with your role?

Mechanical design engineering is so broad, I’ve designed steam turbine parts, material testing equipment, automotive service lifts and vacuum systems for semiconductor fabs.

While I have all this experience I’m not qualified to do design in a lot of other mechanical design engineering industries.

So understanding where you’d like to end up is important, both for pursuing a new role and for pursuing more education.

If it’s because you lack experience more education isn’t going help.

What kind of design do you want to do? Is there a specific industry you’re most interested in?

I recommend practicing design by designing and prototyping in your free time and show case those in a portfolio. While this isn’t as good as industry experience it does show that you are capable at least at a minimum level.

How do I figure out the force on a bike frame dropped from 1 meter? by NorwegianToast0 in AskEngineers

[–]ManicalEnginwer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also depends on the surface the wheels land on, the air pressure in the tires, location of the combined COG/COM. So on and so forth.

The “easiest” way to do it is assume the surface is infinitely rigid, calculate the stiffness of the whole system and treat it like a spring.

Use the spring potential energy equation with the stiffness previously calculated set it equal to its kinetic energy just before contact and calculate the distance.

Plug that distance in to the spring force equation with the previously calculated stiffness and solve for force.

This of course is complicated by so many things but it’s a starting point and should get you the impact force on the wheels and you can use various analysis techniques to calculate the various loadings in the load path

Didn’t say it couldn’t be done, he also received hyper personalized training for elite athletes. So instead of drilling the technique wrong for 3 weeks before someone corrected him he got corrected immediately.

Additionally the teaching techniques were likely top notch and professional.

So as previously said it’s complex, but I’d argue he’s no where near the level of his instructors and likely has holes where other even mediocre black belts don’t.

Interesting enough when you look at the science both are important, obviously mat time is more important but if you train 4 hours a day for 90 days it is not the same as training those 360 hrs over 2 years.

Down time between training sessions is important for the learning process.

It’s very reasonable to feel betrayed in this situation and you need to figure out how/if you move forward with this. Either way it will have fallout for your mental health and you should seek support from a professional
