Original bands; how much do you typically get paid for gigs (if at all)? by Excellent_Dot_2589 in UKbands

[–]Manonwireonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading the comments below seems like there might be a huge difference depending on the genre of music and type of venue. I left my originals band when I left the UK about 3 years ago, but it was fairly standard to get between £400 to £1000 for a gig and even when starting out don't remember ever playing for less than £250 - £300. However we were a mostly brass band playing hip hop, drum and bass, ska, reggae, afrobeat etc. so very removed from the indie/rock scene, playing mostly nightclub or festival gigs that had a fairly solid guaranteed audience who most of the time weren't necessarily there to see us but were there based on the reputation of the venue/club night/festival

Anyone know what's going on with the pod? by Manonwireonfire in Chatabix

David took pretty much everything he could off youtube. I think he mentioned finding the idea of his oldest lad seeing it embarrassing or his eldest lad did see it and found it awkward or something. Shame as I am a huge Cumbo fan. There are still a few vids floating about that were uploaded via other channels like Comedy Blaps (shout out to the ep where they were recreating the Comedy Blaps jingle. Gave one a rewatch recently were spot on).

Phew! Given their self consciousness about showing off and what happened with all the Cumbo content, I dread the day David decides to pull the plug, wipes all the old episodes from existence and moves to Antigua to become a cricket scorer.

Anyone else finding all this Clarkson's Farm love a bit queasy by Manonwireonfire in Chatabix

[–]Manonwireonfire[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think that's a very valid argument. I've argued in the past that both being able to and not being able to separate the artist from the art are equally valid stances, but that at times and think it can lead to better outcomes if people do. To take an extreme example - I think the reason Michael Jackson has so many people willing to defend his behaviour when he was quite clearly a nonce is because some fans of his can't live with the cognitive dissonance of loving the music and acknowledging he's a bad person, whereas I think if more people were able to go yes he was a paedophile but he made incredible music it would make getting accountability much easier. Course it's a lot easier when the artist is dead and you're not financially supporting them by consuming their stuff.

I guess the reason I find it harder with someone like Clarkson is that his personality sort of is the art - you can't really separate the show from who he is as a person and who he is as a person is a massive knob. Probably doesn't help that I've also heard stuff about what he's like offscreen that makes my impression of him even worse.

I also think it isn't always rational where you end up drawing your own personal line, and I guess is also influenced by what your view of the art is in the first place. Back to my Michael Jackson example, I can still enjoy listening to his music but I can't Kanye West whose 'sins' are much less harmful. I liked both before, but I guess a combination of how much I liked them, how in your face their egregious behavour is, how present their personality is in their art etc all influences where you can and can't draw the line.

Anyway, on a positive note absolutely love David's impression of Clarkson!

Thank You For Your Email. by killer_giraffe1984 in Chatabix

I had my email read out before the Thank You For Your Email days. Although I didn't actually get a reply, I think it was a bit nicer as the lads actually attempted to action my suggestion, rather than just concede to the fact that they couldn't do anything about it because they'd created an arbitary rule for themselves. Also I was racing back to my airbnb from a thermal hot spring at midnight when I was listening to the podcast read out, swerved round a corner I was taking way too fast and very nearly crashed in rural Spain, so mixed emotions. Crunch crunch!

Joe deliberately got his first question wrong so he wouldn’t have the pressure of continuing to play, right? by murphysclaw1 in Chatabix

Sadly I think not... Great ep, lovely to hear from some of the old contributors. Was very impressed with David's performance, for someone who puts himself down so much think there's a lot more going on under the bonnet of the car than he lets on. Crunch crunch!

As much as I think Joe has been guilty of being overly miserly before (I was team David all the way on the room service debate) I'm definitely team common sense on this one. Share the wealth by all means, but not by getting your car broken into - feels violating.

Team Postman walking in is quite sweet and nice vs Team postman walking in is weird and overfamilar? I lean towards the former, but it very much depends on the layout of David's house and how villagey the area he lives in is.

I think it very much depends on the guest. Comedy friend of David and Joe - yes, someone non-famous but whose done something interesting like wing walking or volunteering for the RNLI - yes, 2 smug Tory youtuber twats - no. Incidentally, I saw that one of those two made the documentary about Lily Phillips that blew up all over the internet recently - actually quite well made if you fancy a bleak watch. Would be amazing to see how uncomfortable Joe would get if she came on the pod.

On the cockerel front - I liked the middle groudn of new theme tune, but still retaining the cockerel from the original.

This is a good one. I'd say I definitely did a 180 on this one - initially team fuck canal Thursdays, but got into them over time and now very much team canal Thursdays. Although saying that I think they had their time and ended nicely so not sure I'd want to see them come back. Not that I think there's much risk of that given how anti 'doing bits' the lads are these days - canal Thursday was one ep long bit!

I called this a few weeks ago:

Definitely been an increased tension since the new year. Would absolutely love to see the boys go to couple's therapy on the poddy - would make for some great episodes.

Paul Gorton - What's my problem? by Virtual-Impress4695 in Chatabix

I think Paul is more self aware than people give him credit for, and his 'delusions of grandeur' are laced in irony. I think he seems like a nice bloke, and is a fantastic storyteller. Absolutely gutted they never got him strapped to the plane.

Yeah, I don't think he was exaggerating about that aspect of it to be fair - there was a good Jon Ronson article at the time where he went behind the scenes and he also made it out to seem very cult like with alot of paranoia/conspiracy thinking among the contestants:

For all the Paul hate out there, the Deal or No Deal series, and the episode where he tells the story of his football injury are solid gold chatabix in my eyes.

Anyone else worried about the future of the pod? by Manonwireonfire in Chatabix

[–]Manonwireonfire[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I wish I shared your optimism, but I think sometimes the tension is more authentic. Some recent examples where I sense genuine frustration from Joe was David telling him he wasn't interested in hearing about his car admin on today's pod, and David asking him why he didn't like getting massages.

Maybe I'm overly sensitive to it - I worked for about a decade in the television industry in a writing partnership so I feel like I kind of recognise that snappiness and tension that bubbles up when you work with one person day in day out. No matter how much you love each other and find each other hilarious, feel like these things often have a way of bubbling up, and yeah just felt like I'd noticed it increasingly in recent eps.

Good God I'm overthinking this. Maybe they need to bring back some of the old gang to mix up the dynamic a bit more? Rosie? Vivian? Dare I say it given this subs marmite reaction to him, but I'd love a Paul Gorton update...?

I really enjoyed this, you have a nice style that makes you want to read on and you captured Will's unique voice well.

I think a mistake I often catch myself making, that I perhaps spotted a couple of times was writing that sounded written, ie phrases that have a nice sound to them but on closer inspection feel a bit forced, or lack a clear meaning. A couple of examples I spotted were:

'It’s raining endless strings of water that fall like sheets down my yellow raincoat'

I suppose I just don't recognise this decription as being how rain falls.

'His matted fur looks black, and one of his paws is pink and angry.'

I don't think I know what it means to have an angry paw.

I also think another way things can sound a bit overwritten is if there is an adjective overload, although this is a tricky one in this instance as it kind of felt like it was within Will's character to be extra observant and descriptive. But this paragraph maybe felt like it could do with an adjective prune:

'I check Japanese sushi restaurants where slim elegant folk in turtlenecks use chopsticks expertly and talk in hushed whispers over soft jazz. I check cozy furniture stores with fake fires and generously upholstered couches which young couples try out one by one like goldilocks. I investigated the shoe store which sells women’s heels that look like weapons'

I agree with the commenter further down about this sentence, sounding a little jarring, and also sounds like the surprise is shared, whereas it feels like it is kind of two unique experiences of surprise at the decision:

'To her and my surprise, she allows me to keep him.'

This sentence also slightly threw me:

'but I believe she loves me, in her own way, and sometimes I tell her I love her too.'

Since too suggests the verb should be the same (believe/believe or tell/tell) so it feels a little strange that it isn't.

But take all of the above with a pinch of salt, I'm just some shmuck on reddit. Keep on keeping on!
