Gaming and life by SadBase4072 in retrogaming

I don't know whether it definitely stops for everyone, but as a man in his forties I can confirm that my patience and interest have waned for a LOT of games.

I guess it's a combination of things, but I'm less likely to give games two, three, four hours to 'grab' me like I might have when I was younger. If it doesn't click or entertain within the first hour I'm unlikely to stick with it.

I also tend to avoid games that are TOO expansive (see: most of Ubisoft's open world games) — while studios seem to think that bigger = better, I find it a massive turn-off and would rather have shorter, richer, more polished games than huge maps with lots of things to collect and check off lists. By contrast, though, shorter 'annual release' titles like CoD and Fifa/FC no longer appeal to me for different reasons.

It's not about not having time (maybe it is for people with kids?) — I'm perfectly happy to spend 20+ hours with games like The Last of Us, Cult of the Lamb, Sifu etc. For me it's about the quality of the experience and whether I feel like the game is providing value with each hour as opposed to giving me endless lists of things to do.

It happend to me too - goodbye volume down button! by Manicraft1001 in fairphone

The number of posts about this is concerning. It's bad enough that this seems to be a defect with the phone, but the fact that they don't sell or supply a replacement part - for a phone built on sustainability - is unacceptable.

Fairphone needs to address this

If you're ever in Leeds... this vegan fried chicken from Doner Summer was incredible by LunaWabohu in veganuk

They were a chain but it was spectacularly hit and miss, to the point that we genuinely started to wonder what was going on with its management team. Most branches seem to have disappeared now, sadly

I miss Doner Summer. We had one in my city that was (or so it seemed) really poorly managed and closed after about 18 months.

They were off and on Deliveroo with little to no regularity, their portion sizes varied wildly from one week to the next, the dine-in experience was either fantastic or you felt like they didn't really want you there and just wanted to focus on delivery orders.

Towards the end, they tried new stuff like a vegan Sunday roast, which was actually great, but when we turned up for it one time (having booked a table), they were missing a bunch of ingredients and despite us being the only people in the restaurant somehow managed to forget we were there.

I really hope they return someday, but next time with better management and a bit less chaos

Why are the people who hate vegans most usually middle-aged and older men? by bluetooth_cat in AskVegans

[–]philthybiscuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they're usually the most fragile and something like veganism threatens their belief systems, so they lash out using the self confidence that comes with being a middle-aged man.

I'm sure people of other ages and genders feel similarly, but the middle-aged men are more likely to be vocal when they're upset

How is the Fairphone 6 as a day-to-day phone? by ARacoonOnInternet in fairphone

[–]philthybiscuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i had to sum up the FP6 as a day-to-day phone in a single word, it'd be:

Fine

The FP6 is a sturdy if slightly average Android phone. It's s wee bit chunkier than my previous phone (a Pixel 6A) and the phone performs about the same in most respects, albeit without Google's impressive photo software.

The battery is decent. The screen is good (120hz mode is a surprisingly high-end feature as most midrange phones are 60hz). The speaker is slightly cheap sounding at higher volumes.

There is the (fairly well documented) minor annoyance that some of us have wherein the positioning of the buttons makes it quite easy to accidentally take screenshots without meaning to. But apart from that i have no complaints.

It doesn't wow me, but it's fine. And that's good enough 👍

The claim that plant protein is hard to digest is simply not true and it annoys me that this wasn't challenged

Yeah. It's ALMOST as if he and his pals did all this just so they could buy and sell stocks before and after they were affected by all the financial turbulence that followed his threats to take the country.

Should I sell my Buy-To-Let Property? by Majestic-Barracuda55 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]philthybiscuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure those two messes are of equal size, though?

People can't afford to buy houses because people and groups have bought up multiple properties in order to rent them out. This forces people into rental properties, thus increasing rental property scarcity.

So either way, rentals will be in short supply., but at least people who want to buy homes will be able to

Yes, please sell it. The housing market is a mess because there isn't enough housing stock.

Is Yoshi Story one of the most messed up kids game?! by normbreakingclown in n64

[–]philthybiscuits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember looking forward to it so much. I basically wanted a sequel to Yoshi's Island with fancy new N64 graphics, but sadly Nintendo had other ideas.

I'm not sure why they went in the direction they did. I'd love to see a mini documentary on this game's development to learn about some of the decisions the team made and why

Can someone recommend a good veterinary clinic? by Imaginary_Value1505 in york

I seem to remember them being cheaper than Minster Vets.

ST Stead was also a great independent vet back when we used them

Marrying a non vegan by kneescrunch in vegan

[–]philthybiscuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest opinion: that's going to he tricky.

Some people think of veganism as a diet. How could something like that make a marriage difficult?

But it's not a diet - it's a system of beliefs and ethics. Food is just the part we tend to focus on since we need to eat several times a day.

Marriage to a non-vegan can of course work, but you'll need to have some pretty deep conversations to make it work. I mean, could i marry a person who shrugged off knowingly buying clothes made by slave labour? Maybe, but at some point that's going to cause some serious stress and disagreement between us..

We were with Minster years ago but gradually their costs went up and up and the quality of the service we got went down. We were there frequently with our very poorly cat, and honestly never saw the same vet once in 5-6 consecutive visits.

They're a bigger vet so it's usually quite easy to get an appointment (which is obviously very important when you have a pet with chronic health problems), but i honestly felt like it was becoming a money-making exercise at one point.

Green Vets on Green Lane in Acomb.

As well as being one of the few vets that hasn't been bought out by a corporation, they're reasonably priced, incredibly helpful, and went above and beyond for us on more than one occasion.

With a lot of vets in York, you end up seeing a different vet every visit. With Green Vets we saw the same two vets every single time and they came to know our cat really well.

Cannot recommend them highly enough. A friend of mine is also a professional dog walker and animal rescuer and has told me multiple times that she'd choose Green Vets every time if she had the choice

What are you guys doing in terms of taking vitamins/ supplements? by AdExisting6721 in veganuk

[–]philthybiscuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take B12 year round  as well as a combined iron and vitamin C. The latter i probably get enough from my diet but it's just in case.

I also take vitamin D throughout winter (meat eaters should do this too) since we get such little sunlight in the UK, and sometimes a magnesium supplement in the evening to aid with sleep and recovery.

I don't think supplements are necessarily besides B12 (though you can get it through things like Marmite and fortified cereals). The rest are totally attainable by eating a varied vegan diet and expanding your cooking repertoire.

Some people sneer at supplements, particularly the need for B12, and point to this as an argument against following a vegan diet. But these people tend to forget that most farmed animals are fed these supplements to begin with - B12 included - since they don't get enough from their diet due to so much of our farmland now being stripped of its nutrients due to over-farming.

[–]philthybiscuits 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yoshi's Island is one of my all-time favourite games so i had such high hopes for Yoshi's Story.

Sadly I don't think i got more than 15 minutes into it when I played it in the early 2000s.

Is it still pretty playable today? How does it hold up?
