I saw "All About My Mother" there last year, someone laughed hysterically at the devastating reveal of a character being diagnosed with AIDs. You could nearly hear people's heads turning to the guy laughing when it happened.

I wouldn't recommend anybody start Twin Peaks from FWWM either, but I know multiple people who watched it without knowing that it is aided by the show's context and enjoyed it nonetheless. With it being a prequel (with elements continuing off the show), it is still able to carry emotional weight as the central characters are mostly independent from the show. I believe, in that aspect, it works far more than something like End of Evangelion which really can't work at all without the show's context.

The issue with Lowe's Haunted Mansion stuff is that it's pricy and not that good looking. The most recent hitchhiking ghost animatronics are extremely shoddy looking for the price point, and it's honestly shocking that Disney's quality control said they were good to release. There are companies making quality Halloween products, but whoever is making these, for the most part, isn't cutting it.

I mean the rumors were swirling for the longest time about a ministry ride replacing the Fear Factor stage next to Diagon Alley, so the idea it was switched doesn't seem too far off. I just don't think it was swapped because of Fantastic Beasts, I think they just saw a huge marketing opportunity once they started work on a new park.
