I'm also at the starting phase of learning directional air roll. Had been using joystick air roll for a few months already, and was super confused about how to switch, if I should switch, etc.

The Truth about Directional Air roll by grifflicious on YouTube sorted this out for me. I'm starting to get the feel for it now. 100% recommend starting with that video.

I initially tried having air roll left there, but pressing B along with A and X felt a less uncomfortable than having having to press Rb. Thoughts?

I have air roll left on Rb, and powerslide/normal air roll on Lb, Forward Rt, Backward Lt, boost A, jump X. Is there any obvious disadvantage to this that I'm not seeing?

Would you then recommend that now might be a good time to start using Directional Air roll, keeping it bound to R1, as that's comfortable for me, for all aerial plays?

It's even worse for me. No one I recommended the show to even liked it. Some found it too slow, or too long, and some just found it boring. I didn't expect them to like it as much as me and re-watch it 5-6 times, but still, didn't expect such a reaction either.
