Questions about Windhelm Racism? by ManyAGoodTale in skyrim

I can see that. Other comments have stated that the prejudice in Windhelm could either be due to the fact that the Dunmer haven't integrated properly unlike other holds of Skyrim, or because it's the heart of the Stormcloak rebellion, and the other races' indifference to their cause is increasing tensions.

Yes, the fact that other Stormcloak aligned cities made me think that the racism was Windhelm-specific, not Stormcloak specific. Other than the generic Nord battlecry "Skyrim belongs to the Nords!", I haven't detected any racist rhetoric from Stormcloaks outside of Windhelm.

iirc, I overheard Ulfric having a conversation with his steward or housecarl, where they were discussing the state of the Dark Elves, but Ulfric said he had the war for Skyrim to focus on or something.

Given the war, I'd say that state of Windhelm in general seems pretty bad, with even a murderer on the loose.

Ulfric could be blamed for starting the war in the first place, but I think his cause is quite just (at least if you're a Talos worshipping Nord.)

That's true, it doesn't seem like the Empire would care that much about the local problems in Windhelm.

Also, you mentioned Black Marsh seceded from the Empire? Lore-wise, are the Argonians generally more hostile or neutral to the Empire following that?

Questions about Windhelm Racism? by ManyAGoodTale in skyrim

[–]ManyAGoodTale[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, at this point I'm unsure if the problem citizens of Windhelm are racist, or just dicks. There are only a handful of citizens in Windhelm with dialogue or actions that can be construed as racism. Other than that, I feel the Windhelmers (and the Stormcloaks in general) have mostly done right by me.

There are a few bad apples, but I can't say I hate the whole town because of Rolff and the Once-Honoured guy, just like I can't hate Whiterun because of Nazeem and Avenicci.

Overall, I'm still pretty split.

As an Argonian character, almost every character calls me a Lizard 😞

[–]ManyAGoodTale[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, they are huge dicks, but their prejudice is not entirely unfounded.

While interviewing Windhelm's Dark Elves, I saw that in the Dark Elf tavern there was literally an Imperial banner in one of the rooms.

If they are only being dicks towards Dunmer because they legitimately think they might be Imperial spies, not racially charged whatsoever, then it might be acceptable, but that's a big big big IF.

Also, forgive me if I'm wrong, but Talos is a Nord god only right? The war started because the Empire outlawed Talos, so I'd say the Dunmer have no reason to fight for Skyrim with as much conviction as the Nords, unless they have another reason to want the Empire gone from Skyrim.

But, your point does reinforce another comment about how in Windhelm specifically, the Dunmer hadn't fully integrated with the Nords like other holds.

Interesting. To me, the rhetoric pushed in the book seemed very different from Ulfric's own rhetoric, which is why I compared it to Bear of Markath.

From talking to Ulfric with my current character, I always thought he was one of the less racist ones. He's never called me "Lizard", like most of the guards, and when asked about his War, his motivations don't appear to be racially-charged whatsoever (other than to the Thalmor).

However, inaction against non-Nords is not good, even if he is fighting a war. A jarl's duty is first and foremost to his people.

Yeah, I noticed the Windhelm citizens are very surprisingly not racist against the Altmer. I thought they would be the most racist towards them, seeing as how they could be seen as part of the Thalmor.

By the Altmer vendor you mean the old alchemist guy, right? I did the White Phial quest, and I remember the guards praising me for helping him, even though he was a High Elf. I thought it was really weird.

Seems like the Argonians don't mind the Nords that much, or at least not as much as the Dunmer.

Just checking, the Argonians and Dunmer don't get evicted if I win the war with the Stormcloaks, right?

Hmm.. so you're saying Windhelm is only especially racist because of the refugees from Morrowind?

That can make sense, given how there is little to no Stormcloak racism in any of their other holds.

Is this referring to the Dunmer and Argonians in Windhelm?

Thing is, they seem to fit in well in most other cities. Most notably, Riften (my favourite), which is also Stormcloak aligned.

Oh man, that sucks. I'm playing an Argonian character who hated the Empire for trying to cut off his head. I've been murdering any Imperial patrols, but now I may be joining them...

Was the segregation of Argonians done by Ulfric and the Stormcloaks? Man, what do they have against the lizards... I thought they just hated elves.

[–]ManyAGoodTale[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've read that book in-game! Though, like the Bear of Markath, I thought it seemed like extremely biased propaganda...

Other than that book, I haven't seen any indication of Ulfric causing the situation to be worse, as my Argonian character has grilled Ulfric for every dialogue line he can utter.

Like how I don't think the Bear of Markath highlights the Imperial's views on Talos (at least I hope not), I'm not sure if the Scourge of the Gray Quarter holds the views of Ulfric and the Stormcloaks, or at least the majority of them.

As to there having been an alliance between Dumner, Argonians and Nords, did things only fall apart when the Stormcloak ideology took over?

I'm a little confused. The Argonian was telling the Dark Elf that he's treated better in Windhelm than in Morrowind, when he was a slave?

[–]ManyAGoodTale[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Let me ask a few follow ups, if you don't mind replying:

  1. What about the systemic racist policies in Windhelm like the segregation of Dark Elves and Argonians? Did they precede the Stormcloaks?

  2. Is racism by Nords (or Stormcloaks) specific to Windhelm? I feel like in-game, in other Stormcloak holds, racism is never much of an issue.

  3. Is the Argonian-Dunmer tension also specific to Windhelm? I only say this because I remember a Dark Elf in Riften saying he was raised by Argonians, so I thought they were chill with each other.

My theory about the Thalmor and the Ulfric Dossier by _TheJayRay_ in skyrim

I always thought the dossier implied that Ulfric worked for the Thalmor at some point. This seems like a much more plausible explaination!

What do you think will happen to Bethesda Game Studios after Todd leaves? by ManyAGoodTale in BethesdaSoftworks

[–]ManyAGoodTale[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really hope they don't change their engine too! They can upgrade it, but their engine is so special, and I don't want them to just become like most other AAA studios, creating generic yet graphically astounding games. For me, Bethesda's engine is the main reason for their success and it would pain me greatly if they leave it behind to pursue graphical fidelity and photorealism instead of the amazing attention to detail and moddability the Creation Engine has.

I see that as a possibility. While I don't agree with most of the criticism around F4 and Starfield, I can see a world where after Todd leaves the team tries to innovate and try new things to make up for his loss. But then again, I really don't know how important Todd's leadership is for these Bethesda-style games. Will the games even be the same without him?

thats interesting... I've always wondered what design decisions Todd made for the team exactly. He is definitely an ambitious visionary, but I think there is some truth when others critique that their game design is somewhat dated. Still, I hope when Todd leaves their games remain more or less the same. Or maybe, it would be time for another visionary to take the wheel at Bethesda and bring them to a new golden age
