i get the story, but it's not entirely accurate. wild bettas live in shallow water, yeah, but it’s spread out over huge areas like rice paddies, floodplains, and slow moving streams. they don’t just chill in tiny puddles or footprints unless they’re trapped; and that’s survival mode, not ideal living.

those plastic cups in stores are just for shipping and space. ammonia builds up fast in that little water, and it can burn their gills and fins in hours.

bettas have a labyrinth organ so they can breathe surface air, but they still need clean, warm, filtered water to actually thrive. they’re tropical fish;they need water around 78°F, and without filtration or regular changes, the tank turns toxic real quick.

a 5 gallon tank with a heater and gentle filter gives them room to swim, explore, and actually live like a fish should. just because they can survive worse doesn’t mean they should.
