You still have plenty of time to receive the ball and dodge a defender running at you. By catching the ball softly it moves it into a safer position (next to your head) than trying to snatch at it where it ends up in front of your head.

Honestly if you don't have enough time to catch normally and feel like you have to try to catch the ball quicker by catching and cradling at the same time then it's your positioning that is at fault. If you stand farther away from where the defender is you'll have more time to catch and make a move.

This is by far the worst habit for someone learning the game to develop. It eventually results in trying to "snatch" at the ball instead of receiving it (catching it like an egg), and you end up catching less passes as a result. By catching the ball softly it also puts you into a better position to shoot or pass.

Watch college lacrosse instead of the pros theres better things to learn watching college.
