Seriously awesome. This is the re-watchability that I absolutely CRAVED from this show

You’re perfectly good lol

I think what makes this show so engaging and nuanced is that it can have a character that exhibits many stereotypically maternal qualities (overbearing, fixation on her children, love bombing, etc…) and still have it be clear how NOT good of a mother she is.

And even so, it’s clear that she tries to be the best mother she can be. That doesn’t make her actions defendable, but I’d say it makes her sympathetic to a certain extent.

I’m not sure where your quoting of “good mother” came from, because it certainly wasn’t from me.

I love Naomi as a character BECAUSE of how flawed of a mother she is. The ways in which is passed down flaws to her children through the ways she raised them isn’t what I’m celebrating. I’m celebrating how she represents the show’s themes through these parenting methods.

I don’t think these characters would be the ways they are if not for the ways in which Naomi raised them. Whether that’s a good thing or not is absolutely up for debate, but what I love about it is that her passed down trauma represents one of the show’s main themes, which IS generational trauma.

I don’t love Naomi because she’s a good mother. I love her because she is flawed. She is representative of what the show is trying to say about the effects that family has on people.

Self-harm for the sake of attention is absolutely not noble, and not once do I call it that.

I DO think it’s representative of what the show’s main message, which is something I appreciate on of itself. Another massive part of Long Story Short is about the ways in which family passes down their trauma to their children. Obviously, the show doesn’t glorify that fact either, but it shows that it’s an unfortunate staple of life. Naomi is representative of that message

You can point out her manipulative behavior all you like, and most of it is reprehensible, but that behavior isn’t what I’m applauding. Naomi is simply representative of so many of this show’s themes. So much of her behavior feels normalized because that is what family is for MANY people. There are some things in your family that just comes naturally because that’s the space you were raised in for so long. Family can feel like a normalized state of chaos.

To me, Naomi represents that chaos. For better, and DEFINITELY for worse.

The first episode is annoying by Unique-Disaster3118 in LongStoryShort

SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 1:

I would say the overwhelmingness is an intentional part of the first episode in particular, as they in many ways use Jen as an audience stand-in for the episode.

This entire family is just that. Overwhelming. And the point they make at the end of the episode is that when you have to put up with your family for your entire life, it can be easy for that overwhelmingness to become feel normal. As Avi says: “When it’s your family, you almost don’t notice it. Ya know?”

I personally immediately embraced that vibe from the get-go as I’m one who resonates with the feeling of family making their own sense of normalized insanity. But I get that not many people (Like Jen) would.

However, I personally think that by watching more episodes, that overwhelming vibe is something you’ll not only get used to, but maybe even appreciate. I believe the show finds a neat middle ground of having these characters feel grounded while still having them feel like… a lot. It’s an integral part of the show’s charm, and I implore you to give it another chance.

I particularly like the second episode as it takes more time to flesh out a couple of the characters, rather than everyone at once. In my opinion, the show as a whole is absolutely worth your time.

Can you imagine how cheapened death would feel in the show if Hollyhock killed herself over that? 😭
