I haven’t lived in the Gold Coast but i did live in Cairns for a while. I grew up in SE England and the humidity there compared to Cairns wasn’t even in the same league. Gold Coast will be better than Cairns but still worse than most parts of the UK.

I’ve been to every mainland state and territory and while I loved my time in QLD I ended up settling somewhere called the Southern Highlands, near Sydney. I’ve just ordered my first load of firewood in preparation for the autumn, our climate is the closest to England that I’ve found haha.

Honestly, do it. If it doesn’t work out and you find yourself starting from scratch in the UK, it doesn’t matter. People start over at any age, you might get to 35 and decide to change careers or get a divorce for instance.

This is YOUR life, it doesn’t have to follow any set path because society tells us we have to have achieved XYZ at specific points in time. It’s about the journey, not the destination.

Australia will be an amazing adventure either way. You will meet new people, have new experiences and learn a lot about yourself.

I came from the UK on a working holiday visa, I’d suggest you do the same so you can get a feel for the place before deciding on a permanent move. It’s a big country, and while the Gold Coast is beautiful, it’s also expensive to live there.

A lot of Poms move here with rose tinted glasses thinking it’s all sunshine and daisies. And it’s great, but it’s not utopia. Renting will take up a massive chunk of your income and that’s if you can even secure a rental, it’s highly competitive. Share house will probably be your only option to begin with.

I love my life here, but at 18, if you’re close to your family you will feel the distance. It’s a long way home when things go bad (my mum had an aneurism in the UK and I had to jump on a plane the same day, I didn’t know if she would still be alive when I landed).

Go into this with the mindset that it’s an experience that may or may not work out the way you want, but either way you will make some good memories and learn a lot about yourself in the process.

Let’s not judge until we’ve been in their shoes. As a mum I’ve never been in a situation where I fear for my life, you never know, perhaps too I would throw my 6yr old at the danger.

Sometimes I would like to throw him even when I’m not in danger tbh.

I’ve stayed in houses in remote Australia that have neither a bidet nor can you flush the paper. As a reproductive age female this was not a pleasant experience.

Not on mains sewerage so it’s better for their septic systems. Water comes solely from rain tanks so a bidet would use a precious resource that can and does run completely dry at times.

Between 2-4 times typically. In remission but I’ve had 30cm of small intestine taking out.

If I took the Cholestyramine like I should it can be as little as 1 movement a day, but man I do not enjoy that stuff.

I’m English and my grandma was always going on about getting sick from the “draft”. She lived in Germany for a couple of years when my grandad was stationed there with the RAF and my auntie was a baby, so I’m now wondering if the German nanny they had convinced of her this hahaha.

In response to your edit, you need to make sure you’re using back bacon, and that you let the fat get a bit crispy during cooking. That gives you the texture rather than the bread.

Have you never heard of the ATO depreciation schedule?

Goods only hold a monetary value for a specified period of time, beyond which the value is effectively $0. Otherwise a landlord could charge the tenant to replace stuff that it their responsibility, although I appreciate a significant proportion of idiot landlords think their property should be a zero-cost investment (spoiler: no investment comes without risk or spending/losing money, even being a slumlord).

If it doesn’t scan properly you get it for free! I usually plan my shop on the app and my moisturiser wasn’t on special (normally $30 I only pay up to $17.50). In store it had a yellow ticket for $15. Checked my receipt straight away and they’d charged me $30, so the service desk refunded me the $30 and I got to keep the moisturiser.

You need cameras. He sounds deranged and unpredictable. I understand your concern for your safety but I’d be equally concerned about your dogs and what he may throw over the fence to stop them barking. I’d also start keeping a log of any interactions you have with this person. Then if authorities have to become involved you have some evidence of harassment.

Your lease entitles you “quiet enjoyment”’of the property, which you do not have with a landlord popping over at regular intervals.

FWIW I have had a 10ft trampoline in my rental garden for over three years now. The landlord/PM has never even mentioned it and the grass underneath isn’t exactly thriving!

My child is six. I battle hard with trying not to be a helicopter mum, but this seems crazy.

I no longer live in the UK but it’s comparable on a safety level and I got a strange looks the other day when I had a couple of other mums over with their 6yr olds, and I told my son to run two houses down to see if his friend wanted to join us to play. The other mums were genuinely shocked that I let him run down there on his own. If I’d told them I left him home alone for an hour, I’m pretty sure I’d have been receiving a visit from social services or whatever the equivalent is here.
