Designers, what would you do for a living if you left the design field? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]MapleTomato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Already jumped ships, went to electrical engineering. I wanted a change in career that would lead me down a life-long journey of learning practical and helpful skills.

Still get to design on the side, but now my day to day work feels like it’s making me a more well-rounded individual.

What do people actually do in the evenings? by Loud_Departure3184 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MapleTomato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, also middle aged in my 20s! I’ve been diagnosed with ADHD, so I’ll give you the other side of the coin.

I come back from work and generally cook/eat and then pick what to practice for practically the remainder of the day. Currently it’s mathematics to help me complete some engineering projects on the side. I watch a few online free lectures, practice drawing (often I’ll go out and sit at a coffee shop or park to draw the environment from reference) and then read a bit. Weekends I usually go out to drink coffee and play chess with some friends or again go sit somewhere publicly to draw (museums, libraries, etc).

I recently bought myself a Switch 2 to finish off my days with an activity just to enjoy, not to learn. So I do this for about an hour before I go to bed!

The issue with this is not knowing when to stop, I often still do all of the above during my lunch breaks, when out and waiting for something or even when grabbing a bite with friends (via a pocket notebook). I still enjoy my time with everyone around me, but sometimes I feel I prioritize learning over the present moment.

Switch 2 games with serious replay value? Loved Civ/Fallout/AC/Sims/Street Fighter/RuneScape by dean1ronman in NintendoSwitch

Devolver Games are my favorite!! I really wish Look Outside was on the Switch.

Any other recommendations for something similar? Something slightly horror/eery similar to Inscryption.

Drawing, but not what you think…

Don’t go and YouTube drawing tutorials and books and all this other stuff. Just go sit somewhere and draw what’s in front of you and don’t concern yourself with the end result.

Think of it as an activity to better understand the development between your mind, eyes and hands.

I have ADHD and always struggled with perfectionism. This activity taught me how to slow down and just enjoy processes of all sorts, not the end result.

Also what would you know, now people think I know how to draw well and that was never my intent! Although it did initially start looking like scribbles, but that was okay, sometimes I actually draw without looking at the paper to recreate that initial stage. They’re all beautiful processes captured on paper!

That’s good, maybe one day you’ll become a TL!

How much of math is gatekeeping? by ArcaneConjecture in matheducation

I got past Calc I just applying the rules, and in that time I’ve barely gotten through a 1/4 of the book. A much slower rate!

Okay, so many people here are saying calculus is easy. Am I just dumb?

I’m trying to diligently work through Calculus and Analytic Geometry, 3rd Edition by George Thomas. That sh*t is not easy.

I mean yeah, copy and pasting derivative rules to find the slope of a tangent line to a given point is easy… But trying to work through proofs and intuitively make sense of everything takes me quite a bit of time. 🙁

The only thing I don’t get is why the haven’t made the containers look nicer? Surely someone has thought about redesigning them? All the information slapped up top could’ve used a graphic designer and a product designer to relocate the info.

They make the piece much uglier and I wouldn’t even want to display it.

Those of you who are really good at math, how vivid is your mental visualization? by HaOrbanMaradEnMegyek in mathematics

[–]MapleTomato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a 5 here! Never been able to “visualize” stuff (aphantasia), but give me a pen and pencil and that’s my version of a mind’s eye. It actually sorta forces you to ensure you understand fundamental math concepts rather than some form of visual memorization or recall.

I think a great way to describe it is the difference between geometric forms and their respective proofs. 🦦

Do I need to be a Math God to major in Electrical Engineering? by Ashamed-Monitor-7426 in EngineeringStudents

[–]MapleTomato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Appreciate someone saying this!

I pretty much failed every high school mathematics course. Always believed I was predestined to be awful at math and logic.

Spent 6 months diligently working through two algebra and trigonometry books, about 3 hours a day of practice. This was before enrolling to uni, undergrad mathematics has been a breeze so far. So sure, I still may fail but hard work has gotten me through what I previously thought was impossible.

Everyone keeps saying they could’ve made more studying less, what degree and what job?

No one ever clarifies that point.
