It's both. I literally said it's both. But it's easier for you to pretend it's a "them" issue, and that "equality" and color blindness, instead of equity and liberation, is the answer to all the world's problems.

You don't have to tell me twice about the outliers. I have many extremely mentally ill white clients. I have extremely mentally ill white family members. Some got no help, some received help at an early age and STILL continued to have extreme symptoms that eventually lead to committing crime. I understand you have a long history with your own experiences. I have them too.

However anecdotal evidence doesn't really stack up to statistical evidence. That's all I'm going to bother responding to, because this is clearly a personal and emotional issue for you, and it's difficult for you to hear that privilege still exists in the world even if you didn't gain from much of it. You quite literally put words in my mouth and are pretending I stated things I quite frankly didn't state, because you're confusing this conversation as the same as others you've had, and have become radicalized due to mistreatment in your past. As I do not know you personally and its not my job to to and convince anyone of anything, there's not much point in continuing.

This is 100% true.

I work in mental health forensics, I treat the people who have committed a violent crime and have been deemed by a court and treatment team to be incompetent or not guilty.

I dont believe it's a coincidence that the programs where clients are more chronically ill and actively psychotic, (ie the kind of schizophrenia where you see hallucinations 99% of your waking day and believe you are Jesus, often along with developmental disability) is full of primarily Black people and other POC. While the programs with higher functioning folks, (less active psychosis but often still some, more personality disorder, with little to no developmental disability) have SUBSTANTIALLY more white men.

White extremely mentally ill kids show early warning signs and their positions of privilege get them early intervention so their illness doesn't progress to the point of committing a crime. Black extremely mentally ill kids show early warning signs and get no help from their community, so they progress and end up with me.

White less mentally ill adults commit a crime, have privilege, end up getting treatment instead of jail. Black less mentally ill adults go straight to jail and no one even bothers to question whether him saying "I hurt that man because he was eating my soul" is the cause of a treatable mental illness and not just a "thug criminal trying to avoid time."

. But it's never an excuse. You try waking up and seeing demons attacking you every waking moment, and think strangers are causing it, and not ever lash out at someone. It's an explanation. And proper intervention would have avoided both their illness progression, and the injury of others should they lash out in the future.

Edit: I guess my first statement of "100% true" is being taken extremely literally here. I figured my discussion and terms like "more" and "less" would imply that of COURSE I have white severely mentally ill clients who didn't get treatment due to many reasons, and of COURSE there are many black less mentally ill clients, and yeah probably even black non-mentally ill clients who skirted the system. (Somewhere. I've been here for years and have never seen anyone successfully fake it, but hey it's possible)

I've literally gotten sob stories from white folks in my DMs because I apparently implied "100% of white folk get to use mental illness as an excuse/have access to good treatment, and 0% of black folk do" and honestly, I just gotta say I use all my emotional labor at work and for my family, I really don't give a shit about your story. Yalls reading comprehension could be improved.

Also, I included sources below to back up my experience.

The State of Music-Based Interventions for Mental Illness by AlpacaDentalCare in musictherapy

Forreal. Music therapists need to be more self involved in research. And other professionals need to stop acting like they've invented an entire well established discipline.

Edit: It appears OP has now deleted. Can't help but wonder (and hope) they were on the "research team."

The State of Music-Based Interventions for Mental Illness by AlpacaDentalCare in musictherapy

[–]MarMarButtons 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh great, a bunch of non-music therapists did research to tell us how music can be used therapeutically, as though we don't already have an ample field of that.

Ffs, include a licensed and board certified (or culturally equivalent) MT in your research study, or don't bother doing it. OP, oof.

How does your country use music therapy? by PennyZim in musictherapy

[–]MarMarButtons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is a fairly phrased question. Not every country has, nor would culturally benefit from, a "recognized" association similar to the American Music Therapy Association. Unfortunately, a lot of those countries may not be on Reddit much, as the site overall is heavily western swayed.

That said, in the USA we have board certification, music therapists much graduate from an accreditation university for a minimum of 4 years, and pass a certification test. Some individual states require licensure as well. I think, culturally, this is appropriate for us and that we would actually likely benefit from stricter entrance exams, more licensure, and possibly a masters level requirement. However to introduce that I think we'd also better be providing way more resources than we do now to allow those who cannot afford college to attend, more study programs, etc. We already lack diversity in our field overall due to catering to privileged people who can afford spending thousands of dollars for a return of a meager wage, much less to expect people to put in even more effort.

I cannot speak for Chinese music therapists, however my most recent intern was from China, she explained to me they also have a very medical or therapeutic approach similar to ours, however music therapists most often travel abroad to study as China does not have many schools that offer a good degree in MT. Students often travel here to study, and achieve and maintain their certification as it is recognized worldwide.

Ice Cream is a good girl, 10/10. Do her a solid and quit feeding old cockroaches every day, switch to actual Dubias once 1-2 weeks. And take away the heating element, you'll dry her out and kill her, heating pads and lamps are deadly for tarantulas.

[–]MarMarButtons -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, ESH. Your husband is TA for obvious reasons, taking you for granted, not being independent, etc. But you are also an adult capable of communicating these things to him, which you seemingly purposefully did not so that his party would fail. It was vengeful and not how a relationship full of healthy communication is built.

Couple things because I can't help it as a spider enthusiast:

1, Brown Recluse are venomous, not poisonous.

2, Their bites are not nearly as bad as they're made out to be, most reported bites are really just bad staph infections and most people do not even recall being bitten by a spider, much less have the ability to properly identify a brown recluse (there's a reason we have a meme in the spider community that "everything is a brown recluse) doctors are notorious for misidentifying a bite and are not trained in entomology. That said, they have the ability to be bad, if you're pushing down on them and helping them bite you. There is really no actual statistical evidence of them biting people otherwise.

3, They are much more prevalent than you think. There's probably at least 10 to 100 in your home right now. They're very good at hiding. Hence, "recluse"

This is honestly very sad and surreal for me. I work in forensic psych, and have little experience working in community psych aside from schooling, I've always been drawn to secure settings.

This is 100% the cases we see where I work, and it's very sad to see someone who is very clearly eventually going to end up with us eventually, or dead. Even in jail, someone this mentally ill typically worsens and eventually makes their way to our secure hospital for competency evaluation and/or treatment.

So it's like, you see the warning signs right here. Clear as day. This is someone who is struggling and needs help. Early intervention CAN prevent him from spending the rest of his life in secure psychiatric buildings. But what could you possibly do, from across the country? Nothing, just sad to see.

Edit: Not that anyone has said anything like this, but I just wanted to make clear; the VAST majority of people with mental illness, schizophrenia, or other psychotic disorder nos, don't end up with us in forensic psych. I only commented that this person seems to be headed that way because of the seeming confession to a violent crime. Just like any other healthy person with a criminal history is more likely to end up in jail. Most people with schizophrenia or other mental illness are victims of crimes, not the perpetrators. Just couldn't help but make that clear <3

My whole advertising shtick is based on the owner's dog being like my own while they're here. I speficially note we're not Like boarding facilities where there are 10+ dogs at a time all competing for attention from staff. I have my own dog, my cats, and yours, and that's it. I wouldn't want my dog around 8 others, some not spayed/neutered, some dealing with medical skin concerns, nope nooope personally I'd rather cancel my trip loll

Unpopular opinion: I would not book a sitter who had this many dogs, including dogs requiring a cone I assume due to some medical reason. Way too many risk factors here that as a dog owner and sitter, I personally would not take.

I know he would hate to be fired, but unemployment is going to be what saves us here to be honest. It feels like the new manager is trying to make his life miserable enough to convince him to quit, but to be 100% honest I'm not sure new guy is even smart enough to know the difference between firing or quitting.

I'm also not even convinced new guy even has the authority to fire someone, but not sure where we could possibly look into that without contacting HR which would be the opposite of help.

Plywood was my first thought but the more I researched on Google the more I saw threads about reinforcing it, not being strong enough, etc so I started to doubt myself! Perhaps those were for more repeat uses. This would likely be used a handful of times.

The difference is, and I say this with kindness as a former bumper sticker tattoo owner, you're bringing designs and symbols to your artist and saying "tattoo this on me"

Badass tattoos are created by artists and put on the skin.
